I am not a fan of the inordinately physical and coarse brand of NBA basketball that was prevalent when Oakley played. But I have to give him props for being one of the best enforcers during his era. If he had a teammate in trouble, or was offered a challenge or given a cheap shot, he was always had something in store to let the opposition know it wouldn't be tolerated.

In my opinion he's HOF, people put too much emphasis on numbers, Oakley, guys like Rick Mahorn are winners, definitely guys you love have on your team and playing against you'd hate and respect.

Yeah Oakley wasn't a center. He was also a turnover machine whose shot selection was very poor at times earlier in his career. The Bulls were better with Cartwright and Grant even it doesn't seem that way if you just look at the stats. Cartwright skills had declined by the time he got to the Bulls but he could still hold his own against the better centers. The Knicks had Ewing so in New York Oak concentrated on passing, defense and rebounding and became a more disciplined player.

Oakley played a lot in the "Jordan era" as did half the league that was basically something like him. Oakley sucked. I lived through that era and was an avid basketball fan. He was a no-game goon. The rules are definitely too soft today, but the players now are vastly superior overall. There were all-stars back them that wouldn't make any team in the league today. There are no roster spots for guys like Charles Oakley or Bill Laimbeer.
