j posted this after hearing the english version. i moved to japan and lived there for a number of years from1993-2012. married a japanese woman i met there. from the time i first heard it and loved it in 1963, i thought it was a happy song. i asked my japanese girl friend to translate as it played....not a very happy song after all.

I have been a big Bobby Vee fan since his first hit! I saw him in person once in Oklahoma City. I’ve got every hit record he ever made. He died in old age up in the cold country north. He died of Alzheimer’s disease I’m pretty sure. Loved his music!!

It's funny...........I heard the Japanese version my whole life and never understood the words. Despite that, I always knew that it was a sad song. Years ago, when I first heard the English translation, I wasn't at all surprised by the lyrics...........that sad lament was always present in the song........sometimes, a song translates with just the emotion. I always loved this summer hit from 1963. Whenever I hear Kyu's version, I am back there again! Bobby's version is nice as well.

Interestingly enough it brings back memories from long ago & I realise that the words had nothing to do with how the melody made me feel at the time I had been given my walking orders from someone I was very much in love with & even now 57 years later the original song has a sad effect

Bobby had some great hits like rubber ball, punish her, take good care of my baby, he does a nice job of sukiyaki too, some songs just sound better done in another language and sukiyaki is best in Japanese by the then young Kyu Sakamoto those fabulous sixties just come right back when I hear it

I'm not a fan of early 60s teen idol music, but nonetheless, this is a beautifully sung and accurate English translation of the Japanese hit. 🇯🇵 Don't know if Vee recorded it in full & or if that take still exists, but he does have a listenable voice. 😯❓❓ Vee's style is more pop than rock n' roll. There are so many varying renditions of Sukiyaki, but I am interested in any English versions recorded in 1963 or thereafter. Also, it was popular in French, German, Norwegian, and Swedish, and has been sung in those languages. 🙋 Merry Christmas to one and all!! 🎅🎅🎄🎄🇬🇧🇺🇸
Michael, He was Kyu Sakamoto. Sadly, Kyu died in 1985 at the age of 43 - (520 people including him were killed in the deadliest single-aircraft accident in history).
BV tarnished a nice song here. Plus the 'translation' is inaccurate. The 1963 song was about a failed Protest against the American occupation of Japan. NO love lost there !
the original song was composed after a protest about nukes - [correction - you were right - it was a protest about the US-Japan security treaty] - but the lyrics didn't mention specifics - so it was treated by the japanese and everyone else as a love song - while the japanese lyrics are sad - the musical arrangement was upbeat - and japanese performers can be seen smiling almost joyfully while singing it - so foreigners are often surprised at the somber nature of the lyrics

My son was born in Japan. I use to sit in my rocking chair and sing him to sleep. I sang it in Japanese, because that was the way I learned it.

But of course Originals are ALWAYS best for some reason on most ALL artistry.

Japanese version is much better.
Especially when you can find a version with English subtitles so you can understand the Japanese lyrics. Even without the English translation, Sakamoto's sadness comes across in any language.
