How I make paint of earth pigments | Painting tutorial

- Hi my loves!
A very common question that I've got lately is about my painting technique and how I make paint out of natural materials like stones, sand, ashes, charcoal, mud etc.
So in this video I wanted to open up the door into my little painting world and show you step by step how I make my own paint with these natural materials.
Painting is one of my biggest passions in life, and since I started making my very own paints from pigments in nature I really felt how something "clicked" and I really found something that felt completely right in my heart. The first week I started experimenting with making my own paint I just couldn't stop paint. I locked myself into the studio and felt spellbound by these beautiful colors and textures from nature.
And I keep learning and exploring every time I paint, and keep experimenting with different materials from nature.
I really hope I could give you all some inspiration and some answers to all your questions about my painting technique! :)
THANK YOU FOR WATCHING! ♥

I never knew Sweden was a beautiful place because I haven't been to europe in my entire life, so this girl is living a fairy's lifestyle.
When I first started painting a few years ago, I didn't have any paint, but I wanted to get started immediately. So I took what I could find at home: spices, coffee, tea and made watercolours with them. It was an incredible experience. It wasn't perfect, because I didn't have the right paper, but what I felt was inimitable. This video reminds me that maybe it's time to start playing and exploring again.

She’s lucky because she live the life I been dreaming of
She's not lucky, she worked for it. If you want to life such a beautiful life, work hard to achieve it.
@@cosydream9750 she is also lucky. It's never as simple as entirely one or the other. For all you know that person is in hospital dying of cancer, no work in this situation can create a life like that woman is living. I think it's important we remember both sides, we all experience luck and we can all experience hard work and that's just how life is.
There maybe some person who is looking at you the same way you look at her and saying you're lucky because you are living the I have been dreaming of.
Agreed. I was thinking the same. Money hinders me. Covid hasn't made it simple to just have a job or money. I'd love money to have them canvases.
@@cosydream9750 she is luckier than someone who was, for example, born in a poor slum and has had to work instead of study as kid so they could afford food, which means they never got a chance to have a better paying job as an adult. A person like this has worked hard their entire life, but will never be able to have a life nearly as pleasant as Jonna's life. It's not just hard work, it's also a lot of luck.
If more people chose to transcend to a higher level of belief and living of their own finding, the world would indisputably prove far more peaceful, prosperous, viable, kind and pleasant.

This video made me cry. I have always had a love for art, since childhood. One time, over twenty years ago, my son was in grade two. He was given the assignment of making a project out of 100 things. Some kids did cereal, pennies, paper, and stuck them on a board. My son and I decided to do 100 things from nature. Together we collected branches, berries, leaves, soil, all kinds of organic matter. Not only did we have such a wonderful time working on this project together, but this project ignited a fire of inspiration inside of me. To this day I have a burning obsession of using organic matter in my work. I cannot currently live this dream that you are, Jonna. But it is so beautiful and inspiring to see you do so. Thank you so much for your wonderful words of inspiration.
@Shashare Shashare I live in a small townhouse. I live in a big city. I don't have enough space or time to gather the organic matter that I want to. I do paint, but I just cant devote as much time to it right now as I would like. My sons are all adults now and I'm trying my best to help get them set in life. Where I live is one of the most expensive places to live in the world and we are just working poor people.
If I wasn’t too afraid to leave my house ever, I would want to be like her. It seems so peaceful and beautiful. I love nature but sometimes it scares me.😕
Small steps. Go somewhere with friends or family that is safe, like a beach or a park with walking trails (:
Ask your doctor about citalopram. It helps me and I concur with the small steps and with friends comment . Why not take some paints it will give you a focus. Much love x

The beauty of printing has been enhanced by taking the most beautiful colors from your nature. In fact, the extraordinary achievement is an incomparable beauty of imparting the colors of nature within your nature.
Fantastic, Jonna! I'm probably old enough to be your grandmother. When I was young, people called me a naturalist because of my love for nature. I used to go into the woods, dig up unusual plants and bring them home to plant and grow. I also painted. I used tempura, oils, and acrylics. I never thought of using natural pigments and wow, that is spectacular! I wish I'd thought of it! I'm also of Nordic ancestry. I think that, just possibly, if we could go back enough generations, we'd find a connection! All I can suggest to you is to use your youth to create all you can now. I tried to do that because I thought sometimes older people's hands don't work so well. Here I am: old. My hands don't work as well, my eyes don't work as well....etc. I enjoy you and I enjoy your lovely, lovely work.
Love to you Jonna from Jonna.

It's now my favourite quote 🍃
I don’t know why a lot of paint companies don’t make paints like this… it’s environment friendly and it also makes beautiful colors. ☺️
Companies will always do what’s easiest and cheapest
@@kenziefraser462 have you even wondered how insanely Hard would be to create natural pigments at a massive scale? And natural paint exists. It's oil painting, that costs hundreds of dollars for a gallon, and it's a fair price considering the effort.
Would it still be environment friendly if companies produced paints like this on a large scale? I don't think so, because it means natural resources being used up on a large scale. Paper is natural but deforestation isn't environment friendly.
I guess because it would not be possible to re-create the exact same color.
They do. Umber is named after Umbria's dirt in Italy. Same with sienna etc. Many lightfast intense colors are synthesized but only made available after technical advancements in the Victorian era. One majordrawback of using dye pigments ( from campanies and blueberries alike): is that the color fades. Using Blueberries especially will fade really quick. Though usibg sand in your paintings for texture is something out of Rembrandt's playbook. His médium was sometimes over 10 (?) Percent sand.
Fun fact : she is the one who is actually living her life to the fullest
I am literally gelous on this women , probably life is hard there...but the price is worth it

Not a fact but believe what you want.

What I find so beautiful about her videos is she’s not in anyway trying to get you somewhere, or to live in a certain way, she’s just showing us how she lives, and that alone is enough to make you remember that part in you that you lost connection with. Have you thought about trying egg yolk as a binder with your natural pigments and a few drops of vinegar when mixing so the egg does not mold? This kind of binder causes the colors to become light reflecting with a beautiful depth when layering that is not possible with acrylic. I think you will like it. You could start with the lightest color first and layer darker on top. The light shows through and natural light reflects into the paint on the canvas and reflects back up and gives the paint a richness that is not possible with acrylic binders... Also this kind of paint binder lasts hundreds of years on the canvas or board and will not fade like acrylic. (You can see the way to mix that by looking up egg tempera icon painting) Happy painting!
I'm about to try this natural painting too,and I was about to use egg yolk.My father told me once that painters and decorators has been using it in old days that made paint more durable and non-cracking. I've seen using also weat flover paste. Will see how it all works

@@sollayegi7041 I've heard about the wheat paste too. Could you maybe share your experience, after you've tried it?

@Names Last names. Thank you for sharing about Thang ka, I'll look into it. When I started my lessons on the Academy of Art, in 1973, I began to long for the old art teaching system, with master-journeyman-apprentice, where one could learn how to use natural pigments and other materials, such as egg white and oil, to make one's own paint. In those times, artificial paints didn't exist. I'm sure those natural minerals offer beautiful colours. They're vibrant, alive.

I love your paintings and as an art restoration student I'm super amazed by your painting techniques. If you mix plant based pigments try to avoid the acrylic binders and go for protein based binders instead. They prevent the sensitive plant dyes from fadeing. Indigo could be an interesting choice for you. Combined with protein binders it's relatively stable. It was found on medieval sculptures and panels and is often still unfaded until today.
That’s very interesting. Thank you for sharing🙏

@@chervivi8910 Languages are tricky, especially English since it breaks so many rules. It's not overthinking when you're trying to learn and do a good job. :) Good luck!
I just love the way this beautiful earth is a physical part of your work ❤️
Things like this feels like a dream, in the insane world of today is very incredble see something so natural, beautifull and pure. The most people of today live like zombies in her jobs, which they hate in trade by empty money, Real live begins within us and next we must sorraunded in nature to heal ourselves from who the society made of us

Yes, her videos are amazing✨
Jonna thank you, thank you from the bottom of my artistic and imaginative heart and soul! I always look forward to your videos and I have been truly fascinated by your art and that you use nature for your pigment! I was so overjoyed to see you release this video on how you make the pigments because on your last video I asked if you could share how you make them! One day I hope to see and experience the beautiful nature in Sweden but until then I can at least dream. Thank you for sharing. I feel so inspired for my art again! ♥️ from the USA.
I am so happy that you liked the video and that you felt inspired to do art again! ❤️🙏❤️
Much love to you!!
I'm from Canada, and when I visited Finland and Sweden, my first reaction was that it was a lot like home! xD So if you can't afford Sweden, come up for a drive at the neighbors! ;) We have a reputation for being pretty nice, too! haha
😊
This is some next level art!!!
Beautiful painting & you can see the love and patience you take into such a masterpiece!🤩
Thank you so much!! ❤️🙏
I’m so glad I found this video. I’m delving into my artist self again, and pushing past my own limits and doubts, one hour at a time 🙏🏽
Stay on the lane avoid conflicts and keep working and painting
You can make more colours by creating “Lake Pigments” they’re processed fresh natural dyes! I’m planning on learning how to do this over the summer as I too make my own pigments to paint with!
