    I love that people in Alaska are so in touch with the outdoors. We've almost totally lost that in the lower 48. Most people nowadays are so consumed with their cell phones, soccer practice, play dates, etc, etc that they don't even think about something like the Winter Solstice (Or sadly, have a clue what it means).

      It's true we have a homeless population just like other cities. This past summer the city designated an entire campground to the house less folks. With winter on our heels we have emergency shelter in the Sullivan arena. Then if it gets like below twenty there are additional “cold weather” shelters that open for the night like in churches etc

    Thank you for this. I was trying to explain this phenomenon to my kid, but seeing as we live in the southern US and in a coastal plain, where there’s not even hills, let alone mountains, it was really hard to describe. Here, almost as soon as there’s light in the sky, you can see the sun. So explaining to him that the sky is fairly light but people don’t see the actual sun for several weeks was kind of tricky.
    Also, “...leading to the best winter month, which is March.”
    That startled me a bit. I always forget that March is technically a winter month. Where I live, we start getting spring weather and flowers blooming by early ot mid February (some winters are so mild that they never stop blooming at all, in fact), so in my mind March is solidly a spring month.
    I often forget that seasons where I live are a bit skewed.

    • @HowtoAlaska
      @HowtoAlaska  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We are glad the video was helpful. We have marginal seasons here too... we can expect summer like weather May-August and winter weather from October-March. Our transition seasons only last about a month. We don’t have a long spring or fall. Also, we have longer periods of twilight than lower latitudes. In the summer the night is perpetually twilight and in the winter our twilight lasts for about an hour before and after sunrise and sunset.

      November December and January are pretty short for days. It’s not too bad handling it, you just have to stay active. May June and July you never really see full darkness just twilight. The fall and spring are similar to the rest of the world’s daylight.

      We are moving from CA to AK. There was a lot of reasons. Income for me was much higher. Colorado pays teachers about 40k and Alaska pays 70k (on average). There is also less regulation and control by the government... a very different culture. The extreme climate can also be very mentally healthy for some. Reminds you of nature and to be more at peace. You focus more on the moment when weather can kill you. Less people.. more space... etc. We also like to be able to harvest our own meat organically salmon / moose etc. So.. just depends on your lifestyle and what you want. There is also no state income tax and in anchorage/fairbanks no sales tax. Some people really like the freedom and independence. :) I hope that helps

    Everyone thinks its easy to just go up to Alaska and live... This isnt an easy life. If youre not prepped for Alaskan life, dont go! you will waste a lot of money. Vacation in the winter to test out life up there.

    It also depends on where in Alaska you are, would depend on the amount of daylight. Anchorage vs Utqiagvik (formally Barrow). for example. I guess it's wouldn't be bad is you don't have to live alone.
