Lancia Fulvia Coupé Story: Series 2 1970-73

  • The #Lancia #Fulvia #Coupé is one of the most beloved classic Lancia models of all, and it's easy to see why. It's got motorsport pedigree to spare, looks to die for, and enough examples have survived to keep prices on the affordable side... If you don't have to have an HF, at least.
    The revised Fulvia Coupé, commonly known as the "seconda serie" or "series two," was launched in September of 1970, and it's easily distinguishable from the earlier models by its revised front-end design.
    According to the company's plans, the presentation of the new Beta coupé in 1973 at the Frankfurt Motor Show should have terminated the Fulvia's career for good. Yet, the Italian market kept absorbing enough Coupés to keep the model in production until 1976.

    I'm so lucky to own a 1971 Fulvia Coupé 1.6 HF second series. The incredible thing is that wherever you go there's always some people coming for seeing the car, looking at it from different perspective, ask questions and at the end say 'congratulations!'. Of any age without no distinction. It' s a sort of icon, a common heritage of any car enthusiast

    Harry's Garage is in the process of restoring a Fulvia V4 and the engine is in bits - what a little jewel it is. The two banks share a head, but this is flat faced, meaning that the pistons have to have inclined crowns to achieve full compression. Also, for some reason the inlet ports have a smaller diameter than the exhausts, all very puzzling.

    Great video! I’ve always thought that if Lancia had made a coupé based spider model, there is little doubt in my mind that it would have sold well enough to live every bit as long as the 124 Spider or the Alfa Spider did. Certainly longer than the Beta Zagato Spider did. Such a timeless design, especially for an in-house effort.
    The Fulvia coupé is absolutely in my top 10 favorite cars ever made. Someday I’ll get to drive one, and if I’m lucky enough, own one.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      According to Wim Weernink's book on the subject, a spider "sister" to the Coupé was considered at Lancia, during the car's development. But I've never seen drawings nor prototypes, so no idea.

    • @judethaddaeus9742
      @judethaddaeus9742 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Matteo_Licata It would have been such a natural thing to consider given that the Fulvia coupé’s era was the height of the roadster era, too. Both the Flaminia and Flavia had been offered as open cars, so it’s curious that no open version of the Fulvia was made.
      Lancia being 4 short years away from selling to Fiat for a symbolic 1 lira/share probably had something to do with such a glaring oversight, I’d imagine.

    • @BanjoLuke1

      Hmmm....
      Does the current BMW mini have anything in its spirit or character of the original?
      Did the Golf-based "new Beetle" have anything of the original?
      Or the Panda-based 500 anything of the nuova 500?
      The best satire is the Mazda Abarth 124.
      It's a nice thought, but these retro lookalike models are rarely more than a marketing project aimed at the driver who watches him/herself in shop windows.
      These lovely 60s cars were not sold alongside misguided "retro" 40s and 50s heritage models....
      And so it should be now.
      Modern cars are largely )but not totally) dull and forgettable. But that doesn't justify mocking the beauty of this jewel with a Euro5 NCAP-compatible dressed-up Mazda or Fiat.
      Enjoy the original.
      Nothing else will feel as good.

    • @simonhodgetts6530
      @simonhodgetts6530 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BanjoLuke1 Agreed - the modern pastiche models are pale imitations of the originals. But it’s these kinds of cars that sell - witness the FIAT 500’s success. Sadly, as FIAT only see Lancia as being fit to produce one model, the Ypsilon, a reimagined Fulvia could be a way to keep Lancia alive in people’s imagination as a brand. Otherwise this once great Italian car maker will be allowed to die.

    • @Matteo_Licata

      @@simonhodgetts6530 I am sad to see what Lancia is now.... And maybe it is the most significant of the defunct or almost-defunct carmakers of my childhood... But it is one among many: Rover, Triumph, Morris, Austin, Riley, Singer, Humber, Wolseley, Hillman, Daimler, Sunbeam, Simca, Daf, Saab, Panhard and more... It is quite a list and will get longer.
      Better, perhaps, to go when still loved than to be remembered for selling a re-badged Honda Ballade.
      As to the current fad for retro designs, it is a PhD waiting to be written.
      There were no retro designs on the 50s, 60s,, 70s, 80s..... Back then, the focus was on tomorrow.
      What is it about 60s design (or 30s in the case of the Beetle) that is so cool and desirable today?
      The 1960s Fiat 500 was laughed at on the street in the UK when new.
      Now, its cartoonish reimagined successor is everywhere....
      Somehow, someone has decided that there was a "golden era" made up of cars that were quite niche on their day. The "nuova 500" was an Italian market car, a few of which were exported. The 124 Spider was a US market car, some of which stayed on Europe. And yet they are somehow the core of a reimagined past.... that none of us knew.
      The BMW mini too..... All over Paris, Stuttgart, Koln and Madrid now on a way that the original was not. Even LA!
      The same with motorcycles ... Café racers everywhere, or naked retro bikes.... as devoid of character as the BMW mini and the new Beetle.
      Anyway.... A PhD is waiting to be written on how imagined pasts, faux nostalgia and the market combine to bring profits to multinational industries.
      And Lancia..... Better that is falls like cherry blossom at the peak of its abilities than that it churns out re-badged FCA parts-bin specials noticeable only for their unusual paint jobs.

    • @Matteo_Licata
      @Matteo_Licata  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, Lancias were more expensive than average to start with, then we must factor in that, in 1965, when the Fulvia Coupé was launched, there still were hefty tariffs in place to protect the national automakers from external competition. The Fulvia was very expensive in the UK as a result, and the same applied to the Jaguar E-Type here in Italy.

    As much as the Beta is still a decent looking car despite its infamous reputation, the Fulvia looks deceptively petite to almost be comparable to the smaller Fiat 128 whereas the Beta looks too big to be considered a Fulvia replacement. Lancia could have benefited from a smaller 1100-1600 sub-Beta model from the late-60s to early-70s to be a spiritual successor to the Fulvia (along with the earlier Appia) with a saloon of similar length as the Autobianchi A111 (above the 128 yet below the Beta).

      Indeed, the Beta was quite larger than the Fulvia saloon, so the Beta 1300 wasn't a straight replacement, even if company bosses seemed to think it was.
      The 1979 Delta was perhaps the "proper" Fulvia replacement.

      @@Matteo_Licata The Delta was in some respects a more direct Fulvia successor despite being a hatchback though they dropped the ball on making something decent out of the Prisma as far as sporting and performance appeal goes.
      Find it surprising the Beta platform was not flexible enough to underpin a smaller C-Segment saloon car from the early-70s prior to the Delta / Prisma. Will admit to not being sure about the exact relationship or commonality between the 128 (plus A112, 127 and X1/9), Ritmo, Delta and Beta/Gamma (plus Trevi, Montecarlo, etc) families.

    Lancia Fulvia was Lancia till 1969! After Lancia manufacturer was buyed by Fiat, and Lancia quality and soul ended forever!
    Same destiny for Lancia Flavia.

      That a overrated statement. The cars still where engineering marvels. Drive them side tot side and you will agree. I did!!

      @normaluser5755 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aamvoor Not overrated at all. It's true that the cars drove well, but the quality and refinement left a lot to be desired. They also were very unreliable and had multiple problems. Pre-Fiat Lancias were long lasting, reliable and very rust-proof.

    Some remarks:
    - I also only want it for it's body. Ugh!
    - Just like last weeks car it proves that the best looking Italian cars are often the smaller ones.
    - This car smokes baddle every time the number plate is about to come into focus. Was that a special feature to avoid speeding tickets?
    - They got the contour of the rallye black front bonnet completely wrong on Wheeler dealers. Morons!

      There are more small Italian cars than large ones and I would not be surprised if the ratio for the looks is the same. You could ask to define "small car" but for Italian standards the Fiat Dino and Fiat 2300 are larger cars and they look stunningly beautiful.

      Yes, it’s an idea I’ve had for quite a while. I’ll look for suitable cars to film ;)

    Factory steering wheels were woodgrain plastic; not wood. The Lancia 2000 had similar looking true wood wheels which fit the Fulvia. Either is far better looking than the black one here.

      Grazie mille. Parlare in Inglese è stata una scelta precisa, fin dall'inizio, per due ragioni:
      1) La nostra Italia è piccola, e voglio raggiungere un pubblico più ampio.
      2) Il mondo ama le auto Italiane, e c'era bisogno di qualcuno di noi che raccontasse all' appassionato estero le nostre storie, nella lingua che all'estero si parla.
      Comunque grazie per il tuo apprezzamento e benvenuto!
