Slow TV - A Tree Walk Around Shaftesbury, Dorset

  • During our recent short break to Shaftesbury in Dorset, we found a pamphlet in the cabin that had a guided walk around the town, notionally to see a variety of trees. Please, if you want to, join us on that walk.
Here's an online version of the guide pamphlet: www.shaftesbur...
Slow TV isn't for everyone - nothing is scripted here - nothing much happens, except by chance, and that's OK - there are no unexpected loud noises in this video and no midroll ads.

Mike aka Shrimp, you have no idea how these walking videos uplift my spirits. I can no longer walk for more than a couple of minutes at a time. I used to love walking, for miles and miles along canal paths and country lanes, and even in towns and cities. You bring me so much joy, being able to accompany you, Jenny and Eva on your expeditions. Thank you so, so much.

This little parish is astoundingly beautiful. Being born and raised in rural southern US has the perks of nature, but nonetheless lacks much of what is evident here. The cobbled streets and buildings are especially delightful. I feel as though I'm reminiscing for a time and place in which I never lived.

It always amused me that Gold Hill, in Shaftesbury, which is in the south-west of England, was used by Hovis bread as the location for somewhere in the north of England, complete with a voiceover by a northern actor (possibly Joe Gladwin, best known for playing Wally Batty, meek husband of the fearsome Nora, in the sitcom 'Last Of The Summer Wine').
I can never see it though, without thinking of the skit (possibly by the Two Ronnies) where the images are nearly identical, but the voiceover says:
"Grandad always said it were a bloody long way to go for a loaf of bread.'
Also, the music used on the advert sounded like traditional Northern brass band music. I think that the composer of that music, Antonin Dvorak, would have been puzzled, as he wrote the piece, the Largo from his 'New World Symphony', to describe the wide open country of North America. The advert was also directed by Ridley Scott, who would later go on to direct 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner'.

I feel the music you used was more fitting than Largo would have been. I know Largo far too well; this song by The Westerlies in contrast was something new to me, not distracting with familiarity and extensive use elsewhere, and giving the feel of some hidden charm I just hadn't been exposed to before, akin to the town itself.

The only public domain version of Dvorak's largo I could find was orchestral. Really needs to be small brass for the Hovis connection (also TH-cam still flagged the public domain performance as belonging to some corporation anyway)

Nice, clean and civilized.I've walked places like this in Pennsylvania ,though you only see inedible buckeyes.Around this part of Kentucky stuff barely looks different than when Daniel Boone was around, very muddy and overgrown.Back where I lived in Texas there was a riverwalk, not as grand as San Antonio's,but I did enjoy that.Outside the edge of town you immediately were into endless cow pasture, flat and boring except for an occasional small ravine or hill and infested with mesquite and prickly pear. The country is so rough that the occasional escaped convicts mostly gave up after a couple days to the deputies who had to ride horses into the brush to look for them.XD.

Thank you for taking us around the wonderful, historic town of Shaftesbury. It was very soothing!
And, once again, I've learned something. I asked myself: "Will there be pine nuts?", when you walked by the Pinus sylvestris, googled it, found out the answer would be "rather not", read the Wikipedia article and learned that *real* pine honey is produced by coccids and vine lice. Interesting (and a bit unappetising 😉), but still interesting!
Edit: I immediately searched for "Burden laid down" and saved it in my music playlist. I love it!

    • @thany3
      @thany3 ปีที่แล้ว

Bee honey is probably not as good as it is because it's made by a more appetising insect. Quite the reverse. I think bees are considered friendlier than lice because they produce honey. If lice were the world's staple honey producers, they would probably have the same kind of reputation as bees do.

Gold hill is a lot less impressive when you realise it's just a street off the main high street, used to have family in North Dorset and stayed in the area many times, it's a very nice part of the country. There's a view out of one of the windows at Shaftsbury hospital that is just fields for miles, lovely?
Just outside of Shaftesbury there is zig-zag hill which is interesting to drive up with it's multiple hairpin bends, and the very steep hill in to Melbury Abbas (on the higher road to Shaftesbury from Blandford) used to go from 60/NSL to 20 half way down! It's now 40 to 20 iirc but the 40 starts way too far back annoyingly on what is generally a fast easy road.
