I was reading the comments while listening to this comparison...then I've been suddenly catched by a very natural and musical sounding flanger: scrolling back to the video I noticed that it was coming from the MXR!! after, I waited fot the BOSS...but the clear winner is the MXR. the BOSS sounds like an aritifciial sound upon the original guitar signal...the MXR instead blends nicely the two signals into one.
I have a Boss HF2 Hi Band Flanger from the 90s. I never used it much, but I'm revisiting my 80s90s music influences. Note that Noko, guitarist for the briefly reformed Magazine filled in for the awesome sadly deceased John Mc Geoch, used the MXR on stage and I think in studio. I don't have the money to get an MXR, but my try out tonight of my Boss HF 2 tells me that with a little bit of EQ fiddling, any old flanger will do, to a degree! Still loving my second hand Morley Way, Has to be my favourite. Still, thanks for posting this.
aaah both sound great want both so far can afford only one but want them equally,MXR has more beefy sound,BF3 has that hi fi cutting trough sound both great for different styles.
I like the pedal I got it fr my bass for songs from Tool, The Cure etc... but for some reason when I play in the slicer mode which was the settingts out of the manual my amp started making some popping sounds which freaked me out so I swtched it out of the gate/pan mode. Any help or thought as to why this is happnening? I play threw a Acoustic Mini Stack 100 watt amp and had no problems out of it before. I also just run a sansamp bass driver with my Boss TU-3 starting the pedal layout then the sansamp then the boss flanger BF-3 then in my amp. I made sure i'm plugged into the bass port on the right side and I believe im suppost to be plugged into the B output? Or should it be A? I was running it threw the B output when I heard the ppping o the gate/pan slicer mode so I swictched it to output A and still got the same results. I switched bak to the heavy flanger mode back on ultra mode and didn't get any more popping sounds. as weel as I turned my bass down o the sans amp which was only at like 7 out of 12 to begin with. Thanks to anyone who can help..
Sergio Silva I've got the BF2, which is analog (BF3 is digital), and the MXR. The BF2 can get the Van Halen and "Barracuda" sounds as well as the MXR, but the MXR's knobs do have a wider sweep if you want to get crazier spaceship sounds.
Crazier space ship sounds from the MXR? You ain't tried the latest model then. Cause its now a design which is almost impossible to make wacko sounds. M117RAU blows away all previous models.
I owned a Boss BF-3 once and then switched to the analog MXR. Recently I got the chance to play a BF-3 again. It's definitely a more extreme sound. While neither is meant to be a subtle effect, the MXR meshes with your guitar signal far better. Just my $0.02
MXR sounds more organic. The Boss BF-2 would be as organic, but not the BF-3. But still BF-3 is a cool pedal and doesn't sound digital unless you compare it directly to analog. Especially because of the ultra mode I Iike it .And it is easy to dial in.
good video . But, there is no real comparison . between MXR and Boss and the MXR 117 here doesn't look like a vintage (true 117) . Grab a vintage MXR way better
***** What he means is that Boss's flange is more prominent in the Modulation sounding more like it is being squeezed out of a Tube/boxy (Zero Flange Esque) Vs.MXR more rich and fatter sounding.
Why do you think flanger must not be organic and warm sounding. Its very subjective thing how sound appears to different people. It all comes down to personal preferences and tastes.
Please don't plug them in all together in the 1 signal path. They're NOT designed to do that and now days, that's a HISTORICAL technique which CAN'T be used anymore. You're out of date by 30 years! The M117RAU model is true bypass but its slightly effected by MXR's custom circuit. The boss is ruining the sound of the MXR. And vice versa. In 2017 pedal users haven't got a choice anymore! The guys are totally limited to using just the 1 brand and even more limited to using just the signature artists pedal range within the 1 brand of pedal company. The MXR pedals of today won't allow guys to use other brand pedals either side of the brand. Crossing brands is a FOOLISH thing to do now days! FOOLISH! More than silly behaviour!

The MXR sounds nicer and more organic. But it also thins out the mids, making it harder to cut through in a band setting.

Although I wanted boss to sound better, it kinda sounded digital to me, where as the Mxr sounded more natural.
Camera angle needs to show knob settings.
From the comments I thought MXR would win, but I’m loving the cold glittery sound of the Boss
Good, honest review, thanks! I prefer the “natural” sound of the MXR.
Hi. What pedal is better to use with distortion the Boss or the MXR ? Thanks
Both sound good to me!! I was ready to dislike the Boss because it's digital, but I'm pleasantly surprised.
Don't forget that the BF-3 has also stereo outs!

To me, the flanger sounds much better if placed before the distortion. This tames the flanger, much more subtle and musical sounding to my ears.

MXR vs Boss BF-2?

Mxr.... All The way... Cleaner, a more defined sound. Thumbs up!
Don't you mean kinman?
i'm going with boss
cleen
The Boss is way more mids pushy.
BF-3 sounds better to me
Boss♥️
Do you know how to spell "clean"?...
mxr is less intrusive, nicer
good video . But, there is no real comparison . between MXR and Boss and the MXR 117 here doesn't look like a vintage (true 117) . Grab a vintage MXR way better
mxr wins

MXR is more natural and musical!
guess i like the boss better...
In my opinion, the Boss is better. The Flanger effect is not to be a organic, natural or discreet. On the contrary, he must be a special, brightly
Why do you think flanger must not be organic and warm sounding. Its very subjective thing how sound appears to different people. It all comes down to personal preferences and tastes.
Gilmour only uses the mistress precisely because of how organic they are compared to the jet style from boss, mxr, etc
I prefer the MXR
When the power goes on is the Boss just on, thus I don't like it
Good Demo! ">
