    👍 I'm an American new to classic British TV programming & came upon Gideon's Way. How lucky am I, this was & still is, gr8 television. Well-written, well-performed & excellent premise. GW's surely stood the test of time, I just love it. I've binged-watched all week & have yet to come across a subpar episode! I was definitely born too late & long to live during that era in history, everything abt it reflects such gentility. The actors, clothing, furnishings & decorum of the times are sorely missed today.
    Thank u for bringing classic programming to TH-cam, you've enriched our lives, i just love it!👏👏

      I'm pleased you got to see it! When I was very young, John Gregson came to my town to open what we call a jumble sale. Like a flea market. I went along on my own, about 9yrs I think. He said his new series 'Gideon's Way' was starting that night and be sure to watch it. I didn't know who he was! Watched it and became a fan of that and him. If you can, search for a movie called 'Genevieve' with him in it. It's brilliant and a great old British classic.

    33:19 - the hotel sign - advertising that they had 'hot and cold water'! Those were the days!
    Also noteworthy, especially now in April 2021 when protesters against the proposed new police powers bill are attacked by the police in riot gear, with batons, dogs and horses, is how in 1964 the police actively supported the right to demonstrate - no matter the opinions or ideology of the demonstrators; because freedom of speech - any speech - was one of the most fundamental cornerstones of our democracy. None of us then could have believed that these present times could ever be possible.
    Anyway, a very good series. Thank you.

    • @Ubique2927
      @Ubique2927 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      One big difference. Demonstrations then were, on the whole, peaceful and did not interfere with other people.

    • @lifewithklc
      @lifewithklc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Are you speaking on UK police or U. S. police? Because U. S. police in 1964 attacked civil rights activists with dogs, and water hoses and brutally beat them. So in 2021/2022, nothing has really changed about them.

    • @robwilde855
      @robwilde855 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@lifewithklc You raise a good point. I was thinking only about the UK, as in this film. The U.S.A has always been a more violent place.
      Now, as you say, little has changed there. But here in England it's noticeable that the quality of the police is deteriorating, and they're now ready with violence, whenever the politicians direct them, against demonstators much milder than the kinds that they would have forcefully protected in the 1960s, as shown in the first few minutes here.
      It's a global phenomenon too. We're in an age where governments all over are trying to shift towards totalitarianism. Every so often, throughout history, we have to fight to preserve our basic rights against dictators or would-be dictators - that's just how humans are - and that time is getting very close again now.

    • @None-zc5vg

      When corporate interests install governments ( it started with Musso in 1922), then things tend to go irreversibly fascist (and you can't make a stand against it because you're outgunned).

      The police (five of them) recently raided a pub in Essex to confiscate a Golliwog collection; a farmer I know in Teesdale had suspects on premises and the cops said they "did not have the resources" to send anyone. He was told to let them take the gear and claim on his insurance. It would have been a Monty Python sketch in my day.
      Anyway, Gregson and Dinah Sheridan were able to generate a great comment regarding hotels and hot water in Genevieve...after complaining about the lack thereof, a sweet little old lady asked, "Are they Americans?" ;-) Those were indeed the days.

So if passive smoking did not get you - flying through the front windshield following a car smash was certainly a quicker way to go. (ex youngest child - never been a smoker - no prizes for guessing why).🥵🥵

    Don't expect too sympathetic a picture of a Mosley-type movement from producer Monty Berman or director Cyril Frankel!
    Scripter Alun Falconer was a New Zealander who had written two interesting, underrated Britpix: 'The Man Upstairs', a thriller unfolding in real time backed by the technicians' union, and 'Never Let Go', Peter Sellers's first straight role- as a violent crime boss.
