In this video we teach you how to actually finish your game by avoiding some super common obstacles that almost all game developers will face.
Besides motivation, there are a lot of things that can stop us. Our grand visions often clash with reality, we lose momentum eventually, we try to form the wrong habits, and we often let the emotional toll of other people's opinions get in our way.
None of these things can stop you on their own, but when combined, they often stop our progress in its tracks.
Being aware of these traps and learning how to avoid them will not only keep you working on your game, but you will be prepared to push through them when they inevitably pop up.
If you're new to our channel, we're Brandon & Nikki from Sasquatch B Studios. We sold our house to start our game studio, and work full time on building our business and making our game, Veil of Maia.

    Each point is spot on.
    The importance of planning.
    Atomic habits.
The criticism of systems you spend ages on taking an emotional toll even though you say (and believe) you are open to criticism.
The crazy house with kids and a full time job spending a few free hours a day grinding the boring stuff.
Nice video, I wish everyone the best when tackling their projects :)

I struggle with this. My current game is sitting at about 95% done and I've just been in a slump since November where I haven't touched it.

@@Joop55-Joop55 It's called Lady Dracula's Mansion, and it is currently sitting in the Steam Direct review process awaiting a store page.
So I did eventually get to the finish line, even if I long slipped my initial planned release date of Halloween. For me, that last 5% is tough because it involves a lot of un-sexy stuff like repetitive playtesting, annoying bug fixes, and adding in all the incidentals (such as rebindable keys, selectable resolutions, and that sort of thing) that aren't at the forefront of my mind when I have a fresh game idea that I'm jazzed to work on. It definitely helped me to set a goal of at least touching the project once a day. Some days that meant just making a 5 minute little tweak or fix, but a lot of the time it turned into longer productive sessions of work.

I think it is very important to start with a limited scope. My process is starting with a scope for the demo. Make it small, like you said, and spend a little bit of time on it a day. Plan for 5-15 minutes, and the next thing you know, you will have spent 30 minutes to 2 hours working on it. But plan small, work big, if you can. Having a scope limit lets you get essential systems in place then you can build out content. But get your vertical slice developed, release it for people to play, gather feedback, tweak it, tune it, release it again. Then start adding features and content.
Have ideas for 20 abilities? Make 3. Set up the system so it works and can be expanded, but get 3 in place and test them. Get the switching between abilities working. Build up the system, then adding more abilities becomes easy. Same with levels. Get the game working with a single level that has things you want in it. Maybe it is an endgame level, so it includes everything you want the player to be able to do, then work backward. But work on it. Get stuff to a point where you can get it in front of people. By letting others play your games, you can get feedback of things you ignore or take for granted. Playtest early, playtest often. Kind of like the old adage fail fast, fail often. Find where it works and where it doesn't before investing months into a feature that no one really wants.
But actually make things AND release them. Devlogs aren't enough. TH-cam isn't enough. Showing friends and family isn't enough. Get it into peoples hands and start building your reputation and brand. Your first release shouldn't be big and it likely won't even be good, but get it out there. Build your portfolio and people will be more likely to buy your dream game when they see that you already have a back catalog of other games.

my coding was fast and productive at the start, now I'm slow and trying to get trough the middle, not knowing what should i do first, but i believe that if will just stick to one thing, I'll get back on tracks, once i create the alpha or the beta, I'll finally have the game "done" and will actually have more motivation to get it actually done

Thank you for reminding me about thin matrix. I forgot about him. I recently remembered his project but forgot its name and who made it.

My problem is that im trying to find perfection rather than progress. Ive spend months rewriting an asteroid system. For my game when theres so many other things that need to be worked on. Plus doing TH-cam videos and getting sidetracked by other game ideas😅

Fellow Game Dev here, some games published already. I can see you have a lot of drive, and was really curious to read your novel (congrats btw) where can I find it? That title gives me no results on google

10 months later, both Samurado nor Veil of Maia are available in the Steam store as of this writing
So is this video just a scam? Or are you dealing with insane delays?
