  • Fernando Sor or Josep Ferran Sorts i Muntades (baptized 14 February 1778 - died 10 July 1839) was a Spanish classical guitarist and composer. While he is best known for his guitar compositions, he also composed music for a wide range of genres, including opera, orchestra, string quartet, piano, voice, and ballet. Sor's works for guitar range from pieces for beginning players to advanced players such as Variations on a Theme of Mozart. Sor's contemporaries considered him to be the best guitarist in the world, and his works for guitar have been widely played and reprinted since his death.

Played very, very well. One of my favorite peice by this incredible composer who would be more renowned had he been primarily a keyboardist, or a violinist.

A towering masterpiece composition, heads above his contemporaries. Sor was the greatest of his time.

This dude wrote and played this. Him and aguado must have absolute beasts who were slowly dying of cholera. What a time to be alive.

They were. I think we moderns sometimes underestimate our musical forerunners. I mean, there really aren't many guitarists out there today who can 1) write (a ton of) incredible music like this and 2) play as well as Sor, Giuliani, Aguado, etc. Not to mention that we have way more resources than they did. Let's also include the fact that they were all able to improvise in a way that few classical players these days even attempt. I read and collect guitar methods (19th century to present day, many styles) and I've never seen one that even comes close to the sheer brilliance of Sor's method for the guitar. It's a work of total genius that puts most guitar publications (especially contemporary ones) to shame. It draws heavily from music theory, mathematics, physics, history, literature, and philosophy, making it hard to read but extremely rewarding.

lovely piece! I like the slight individual flavourings of what timings are pushed and pulled slightly for emphasis on phrasings.
Also with this piece the hand Fatigue is real!

    Amazing performance ! :)
Also, one thing I really like about music (it doesn't include singing though), it's that when you listen music, you can't judge the performance according to the sex, the nationality, the political ideas of the musician, it's ONLY about music. In fact, I think that's why I love music so much. :)
Anyway, thanks for the great upload !
P.S : Will you upload some Kellner's pieces on this channel ? I'm currently studying a piece by him (Fantasia in d minor) and I think his music is interesting :-)

@@tomaszhejna8446 Wow this comment is old. But i was only talking about the performance in itself, not about the context of the music, it's obvious there's "political composers" (Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Nono, etc.)
