To everyone out there asking why he recorded two guitars playing the same thing, here's the answer: double tracking. Despite playing the same exact part, playing and recording it in two takes (usually with a different guitar each time) gives the rhythm track a fuller sound, especially when one is panned left and the other is panned right. Alice in Chains, Nirvana, RATM, Led Zeppelin, Randy Rhodes, and Eddie Van Halen among others have just one guitarist in the band. Yet, when they recorded their albums, the single guitarist recorded two rhythm tracks (one left, one right) and sometimes, even another track for the guitar solo. Hell, I think Jimmy Page had like 8 guitar tracks on Achilles. Bands like Guns N Roses and Aerosmith had it a bit easier. In essence, they had each guitarist record the rhythm track to the song (Slash's rhythm parts were panned right; Izzy's were panned left), and then one of the guitarists recorded their solo in a separate track (usually centered).
