  • The Matildas' game against France was the most watched Aussie sporting event since Cathy Freeman's 400m run in 2000, and we take a look at how fans across the nation reacted to the moment we made the semi-finals. Former Socceroo Craig Foster joins us.

For those of us old enough to remember it was 1974 when Johnny Warren and Australia's Socceroo's - amateur players - yes amateurs - qualified our nation for the biggest team sporting tournament in the world. The nation was mesmerized back then too despite deriders from the "manly" codes calling the game "wogball" and a game for "sheilas, wogs, and pooftas". Behind the scenes and in front of the camera, there were people like Les Murray and Craig Foster and others helping to build the game from the ground up. There were famous women too whose names we should all learn about who persevered against even greater odds to see the sport thrive and grow among female athletes around the country.
Fact: There are more soccer players in Australia than all the other "football" codes combined - and have been for decades. Perhaps, the greatest achievement the Matildas have made through their tenacity, skill and perseverance is less about a stunning victory in such a high profile sporting event and more about helping us all overcome our prejudices through effort and excellence. "Sheilas, wogs and pooftas" no more. We are past that now.

Craig Foster is right on the mark here. Got to get out and support the local football/soccer clubs. It’s not a one off. Continued moments like these needs support at the local levels.
Also I wished the AFL and NRL would take note of what the Women have done with this World Cup. Bury the ego and stop trying to block Australia bidding for the Mens World Cup.
If AFL and NRL have to stand down for a month or even cancel a season so we can host the Mens World Cup then so be it. No one else in the World cares about AFL and NRL except those fans in Australia. Everyone cares about football/soccer
