Ekalavya was guilty of stheyam/stealing of knowledge. He also got a light sentence. Ekalavya was the son of Nishada who was an ally of Jarasandha who was an enemy of Hastinapura. Drona was forced to punish him. This is similar to "If a talented Pakistani works at DRDO and steals weapon system designs, he will not be rewarded for his talent but probably imprisoned or worse."
