I epoxy a 5/16 to 3/8 Hickory rod 41/2 inch long through the pistol grip four strength. And pillar and glass bed them. These are done on the heavier magnum calibers.
Does the width of the growth rings indicate durability at all? Some growth rings are very wide and far apart----a great look. Other times, the growth rings are very narrow and tight/consistent. Aside from personal preference for looks, is one better than the other for long term performance of the wood?
From the 1870s in Scandinavia, used for the 12.7 rolling block, true it is quite a dull timber until you get to the birds eye and striped selections, but it's a good timber for the job for sure.
Terrible screeching music. it sounds more like pulling an armor cable thru steel sheet. It really want to turn this video off! Ur content is excellent so pls, make the sounds more pleasant. Thx
cant stop admiring the craftsmanship of the freaking door and its finish
Is it oak do you think?
Same here, stuck on those doors.
Those are excellent examples of checkering styles.
There's one piece in there, the checkering/carving reminds me of the old Browning Olympian grade rifles. Very well done.
Outstanding!
As a woodworking hobbyist, walnut is my favorite wood to work with.
The door itself is beautiful.
Kurt sounds like one of those guys that you could talk to for days and not soak up a tenth of the knowledge he has.
What a craftsman. :)
Amazing, wonder if Kurts still making these gems.
man the checkered grip that you can see the grains swirling in is beautiful man this guy is good. i think I'm going to bug him to finish my 1917 12g
Birch and Beech is quite easy to distinguish. Birch is much more maple esque in looks, while Beech has it's small dots/rays all over

This is really great, thanks for the vid
Great video.have you ever tried olivewood?
You have a lot of patience. Checkering and carving is a time-consuming process.
good vid..

From what I understand, birch was also used for M1 Garands and M1 Carbines during WWII for cost saving reasons as well.

That inletting is beautiful almost a shame to cover it up with with the barreled actions. I am waiting for him to mention Turkish Walnut.
Not too sure about ''Beachwood'' though ;-)
Does anybody know the name of the song at the beginning?
Nothing beats birch treated with pine tar
where can you find the different stocks to buy?
173rdUSmilitary I get all my stocks from Boyd's stocks out of South Dakota.
Kurt
Kurts Checkering Is Boyd's usually good at getting the grain structure for the pistol grip right on the XX grade walnut?
