  • Today on Free Mow Fridays I try out the M18 Milwaukee Super Sawzall on these overgrown thick lawn edges. Is this the best way to get straight lawn edges? I mowed this nature strip at no charge to the resident, I make my money through these videos.
If you are interested in any of the equipment I'm using, check out my new page Turf and Tools / @turfandtools where I review equipment that I am sent and use. If you'd like to send something for me to show, send me an e-mail timthelawnmowerman@gmail.com
Hi! My name is Tim The Lawnmower Man and I love to clean up overgrown yards and make fun videos doing it. I'm able to do them for free as these videos have ads on them and the revenue from that enables me to cover my cost.
I'm always looking for the worst yards around. Sometimes I drive around looking for them, sometimes viewers send me suggestions.

I am going to dig out my reciprocating saw and get it ready to do some edging now I have seen this! That was so much nicer to watch and listen to, for sure. I can't bear the sound of the edger to be honest. Sadly, I know they are a necessary evil however I would much prefer the saw or just the weed eater edging. Regardless, you do a fabulous job anyway Tim.

I would think OH&S may have some thing to say about the back problems that may easily occur from that particular lawn maintenance equipment Tim. Needless to say, it did the job. A bit too close to ground for me. However, watching and hearing the wippersnipper or blade edger is so much easier to watch 😁. ❤️

Things could go real bad if a reciprocating blade hits a rock or an edge of the concrete below ground. Other than the back issues, I still feel that a rotary tool is safer. and having a rotary tool on a long handle will save your back.

Why not use a proper edging tool, the one with a blade like a circular saw or a 3 blade propellor? Petrol powered versions should be more than powerful enough to tackle thick vegetation and/or compacted soil AND they have a long handle! Personally, I value my back and would look at alternatives to bending low for any lengthy periods.

The results look great although I'm not sure it's a tool I'd use for that purpose more than on the odd ocassion when I'd forgotten the proper edging tool. There's a chance of the saw kicking if you hit a stone of paving edge, and as someone else has pointed out, your posture when using it is definitely putting a strain on your back. You're not getting any younger, and we don't want you to get hurt 😄

What blade did you use in the sabre saw?? I have some aggressive pruning blades that I sometimes use for other stuff, but I think they might be blunted by being run against concrete paving. Maybe some ordinary demolition blades. Also, bending down to reach the ground with it might hurt your back after a while: maybe there's a smart handy person nearby that could make you a handle, out of an old crutch or something?

That was such a lovely "Grime Line" 48 seconds in. Wouldn't have thought of using a reciprocating saw to handle matted overgrowth and cutting in the soil, bending over would be tough, but it is obviously capable of doing good work. To some degree being humorous, my husband would say people use the skills related to their trade. As plumbers and builders may use a reciprocating saw, where they could peer skeptically at a Trimmer, they may pitch in on some small garden rescues with something more familiar. Perhaps they would chalk-line a potential edge before starting? Do like the sharp and neat edge. Your long-handled scraping tool has been a great find as well. End result was very sharp. Nice test and good on you for keeping on eye out for things that might work.

I've always known them as a Rambo saw.
You can get a million different blades for them and for what you're doing the coarser the teeth the better I think.
Blades won't stay sharp for long but would that matter.
A word of caution is you could risk cutting services running under footpaths and even storm water lines from down pipes to gutters in the street. .
Telstra was famous for barely covering the old copper phone lines.
You can get varying length blades so I'd recommend a short one.

I see the concerns about your back, and I agree that can be an issue. However, I like the creativity of this solution for certain circumstances. It's fast and effective here, even if impractical for long runs. It may be hard for some viewers to appreciate how truly tough some species of lawn grasses are. A string trimmer or blade edger won't necessarily cut through them on one pass. Whether or not you're serious about using this beyond this video, it was clever and fun to watch.

Reciprocating saws or Sawszalla do work great for a crispy edge but definitely use an older blade they dull fast in the dirt and hitting the edge of the concrete and finishing with the weed eater or string trimmer polishes it up greatly good idea. The sawszall gets a better radius then the edger. To bad it couldn’t be mounted on something to relieve the bending over.

Good idea...a bit hard on the back and I would be worried about potential issues with some potential electrical lines that could be cut since those sawzall blades are lot longer than an edger.

Crazy backbreaking but hey it’s your business do what you want ✌🏽

Awesome my son just brought 1 of those, i wonder if he will let me use it for my edges 👌🏼 🤣

That reciprocating saw is a back breaker for this task!!
It does appear to have done the job well.

Sawzall is perfect, but I agree the stooping over will get to you. Compared to a true edger, the blade wobbles a bit more so the vibrations should fatigue you more. But hey, whatever gets the job done! Tim, please comment on this...most homes you do have some type of water meter in the middle of the front yard, and sometimes some sort of elevated round white form. Seems an odd placement for both. Here in NY my water meter is in my basement, and electric meter mounted on the side of my house. Is this a standard in Oz?

What you see is standard for us.
Some electrical meter boxes are wifi/bluetooth compatible but not many.

Water meter is typically near the front property boundary, some above the ground while others might be sunk into a small boxed pit. Basements aren't very common here. Electrical meter is on the side of the house, although on more rural properties, may be mounted on a pole between the street and the house.
I imagine the elevated round white form you may be referring to is access to the sewer - they may variably be located at the front or rear of a property or located flush in the road. Not every property of course has one of these.
There can also be small pits or boxes on the front property line for telephone/internet/cable connections.

Thanks for the info! I guess here we typically measure the water and electrical usage right as it enters the house. Both service meters are able to be read by technicians from the road as they drive by, so it's some sort of rfid sort of thing. I only questioned this since it seems to make the yard seem cluttered with piping and objects. Also, we get serious temperature drops so having exposed water pipes and meters would be a major freeze hazard.

@@jsmith2295 Yeah, no such issues with freezing here. In fact where I live, during the day in summer, the cold water tap initially runs hotter than the hot water due to the PVC pipes in the roof cavity having heated up since the taps were last used. It cools after 30 seconds as the water from the buried pipes starts flowing through. Also means water is rather chilly (for Australia anyway) at night in the middle of winter.
Electricity meters started using 'back to base' communications a number of years ago (5-10?, I'm not sure exactly); with electrical companies now slowly retrofitting manual or wireless streetside read systems.
Some areas now have similar 'back to base' (hourly) readings for water meters, but not in my area - they're still manually read each quarter.
I've no experience with how water is metered for apartment buildings and the like.

Faster than the normal edger but looks like it would make your back hurt. Does make a sharp edge though

Tool looks more efficient, faster and once the edge is cleaned up....looks like a winner to me.

Yeah Tim that that works but what about your lower back I think that other tool would work a lot better plus you don't have to bend over as much

Good idea. Makes for a crisp edge but it sure is hard on the legs and back. Looks great and thanks for sharing another good idea.
