I think you have to take this with a grain of salt. Apple Maps may be better in the US/Canada, but in Europe is another whole story. I live in Spain and G. Maps is way better, IMO
Apple has the majority of their tech grasp in the USA so they do most of there fancy stuff, like images for apple maps, in the USA. Google has hundreds of advertisements and videos showing how they try to cover as much land as possible for google maps.
I live in Germany and we got Lookaround with Apple Maps last year. And it is insanely good. They have mapped every little road even really remote ones in forrests. Most of the images in Google Street View in Germany are from 2011 or 2012 so they are really old. And navigation is basically the same between the two. So I switched to Apple Maps last year and I'm really happy with it.
Agreed. I like the design and minimalism of Apple Maps. I do wish the reviews were better, but I honestly finding myself just looking it up on Google for that and just getting place to place, the UI is good enough for me
There must be a specific generation that cares about reviews. I need to go from point A to point B. Thats it. Reviews is a place for unsatisfied people (mostly unjustified)to rage. Sorry. Fact.
@@jamesnyers1721 Not really a fact since not all people leave reviews that are negative or unsatisfied. It’s helpful to know what peoples experiences were from a business good or bad. Saves you a trip and money.
I spent a week with my brother and he only uses Apple Maps ... I think it has come a long way and was very useful. I do agree that the detail on lanes and landmarks (trees, etc) are better on Apple Maps. But I can switch to satellite view on Google Maps if I need to see things like that. I use Google Maps every day for my commute and love it (especially when it shows speed traps). It will also give me a notification to let me know how long my commute will be, just in case there's an accident. Great comparison video
Apple Maps also warns about speed checks and notifies about accidents, it even recommends a faster route if there’s a last minute accident reported on your route
Apple advises of speed traps too as well as how long my commute will plus alternate roots. Google has had a definitive head start though does a few things better.
@@Murillos1 Apple Maps is my primary navigation app and is underrated, however google maps is better to explore around, and it’s constantly getting updated, so new buildings and addresses sometimes don’t show up in Apple Maps, or the location is not precise, in those instances I use Google maps. I like to take the best of them both
I used to use Google Maps, but since I bought my Apple Watch I use Apple Maps. I love how how it vibrates when it’s time to turn, and shows the direction of the turn. Handy when it’s bright and my screen is hard to see. Also giving me details like driving thru a light and turning at the next light. Those two alone makes Apple Maps better for me.
Just to add a couple new things for Apple Maps with iOS 17: Find My is now kind of integrated, people don’t show up directly on the map but they do show up in search so you can easily get directions to them. Offline maps are also now available
I definitly think Google Maps actually takes the win for Street View just because of the ability to go through time and contribute to it yourself. And, Google Maps can also split-screen like you showed with Apple Maps. :)
If Google maps used the data from Waze (which they also own) and incorporated warnings I think they would win. Or even if they added lanes considering they have street views of the actual roads they have no excuse in my opinion lol
@@damnimloominI don't get how having different lanes in street view is actually helpful, it takes more space in their servers, needs more cars to capture every lane, Google being that serious about ecology wouldn't add such futile feature I think
@@bapoTV they could just have someone use their eyes and look at current street views lol or use an ai to fill in the blanks since we know they love that. Also that’s fine if one of the largest tech monopolies can’t find some server space I’ll just keep using apple 😂
I feel like the main drawback to using apple maps in Europe - in german speaking countries at least has to be the fact that almost no one uses yelp. So you just can‘t find a big chunk of restaurants or companies you‘d like to navigate to on apple maps- everyone has a google business profile tho so you‘ll always get an Adress using google maps - I personally like the clearer instructions on when to turn and the nicer layout of the actual map on apple maps a lot more so I‘ve been using that a lot.
This is the first time I'm seeing why Yelp is still used. I always thought who uses yelps? Google a restaurant and read or add reviews right on the search result, no need for a separate app for that. Now I see why, Apple keeping them on a lifeline.
I work for a public water utility and sometimes we have to assess damages from water leaks to sidewalks, roads, etc. I’ll use google street view to find out if the damage was there before our leak or if a meter box was covered up by landscaping or pavement. Being able to time travel in street view has helped us a lot. One nice thing you didn’t mention about Apple Maps is that you can share your ETA with your friend. So if you two are meeting up by a certain time, you can rest assured they won’t be late and you two can arrive around the same time to eliminate waiting. I use google maps for 99% of my directions in my area. I’ve noticed that G Maps is more accurate than Apple Maps when it comes down to traffic and arrival times. Google will have you take certain side streets to avoid traffic where Apple will have you stay on main roads and avoid neighborhoods. One thing I really do like about google maps is the ability to start and cancel a route with just one button. That is very important to me, especially when this app is designed to be used while in motion, such as driving a car. That means I can tap the phone or infotainment screen on Apple CarPlay one time whereas I have to press the screens two times on Apple Maps which costs so much time and attention away from the road.
I'm from Malaysia and I have Apple Maps, Google Maps and Waze for different use cases. For daily navigation and restaurants research, I use Google Maps, when I drive on highway, I use Waze to check the road reports and toll fare. Whenever to travel to Singapore (or any Apple Maps supported countries), I will switch to Apple Maps as the navigation/public transport arrival time is clearer and more accurate.
Not sure if Apple Maps does this but one cool feature I love is the intergration between google maps and photos. So it overlays the photos that you've taken in a particular location on the maps and you can zoom out to show more pics in other locations. I found this very helpful when I'm looking for pictures that I took years back in a particular location. Just navigate to that area and I see all the pics that were taken there
Yeah. Apple OS Photos apps uses Apple Maps to overlay photos that have location data. Photos without location data are not displayed on the Maps, but you can easily add locations to the Photos to see them in Maps view. I like it better this way.
@@FabExoN Open your photos app, go to the “albums” tab, scroll down to the “people and places” section, and then click on the box called “places” - should bring up a map that shows where all your pictures were taken, as described above
I think the main thing going for google maps is that it works mostly everywhere in the world. I live in South Africa and google maps is great for suggesting safer route options whereas Apple maps does not do that. That may also be why Google maps suggests you to go past your slipway turn of to make a u turn, because most of the world drive on the left side of the road. Letting you go past the slipway and making you do a u turn. I might be wrong though.
Another bonus feature for Apple Maps that I use heavily is it’s integration with the Apple Watch. When you have navigation active, you can just look to your wrist for the next instruction, and it gives different haptic notifications depending on which direction you have to turn. The same thing applies to CarPlay, if you have navigation active it will seamlessly work across all three at once, whereas Google Maps needs a bit more user attention to make work.
Everything you mentioned fully automated with Android devices too ;) That said, historically and till this day, apple=more steps+more user input required while Androids=less steps, more automation. His video once again showed proof of that too. Too many hidden stuff is a headache for many people.
Got to figure out how to disable notifications on Apple Watch while using navigation with CarPlay. Having this haptics on the wrist while driving is annoying as hell.
Yeah Google is really bad for that while Apple displays transit and cycling directions much better. It’s cleaner and more simple, easy to use ect. Also the graphics and guides are great.
@@greek9244 However Google Maps has transit, walking, and biking coverage in so many more places than Apple Maps. Apple Maps is mostly good in the U.S. and Google Maps easily wins out outside of America. Once Google Maps adds Live Activities their transit directions will be absolutely amazing though…
@@OEverything I agree that google maps has better biking coverage outside the us, however I live in Germany and Apple Maps has covered every small bus route of every shitty town I know
@@OEverything nah google maps transit doesn’t really work at all in my country or city but Apple Maps has better transit coverage in Western Europe than google, but Eastern Europe google maps is a lot better. Just depends on where you live I guess
Apple maps is invaluable to me when driving in new cities because of it's spoken lane warnings. "Stay in the left two lanes", stuff like that has saved me so many times. For some reason my google directions are almost delayed, like the spoken directions did a poor job anticipating where i'd be. Those last second directions can be hectic and even dangerous
One nice thing about Google Maps is that you can actually put emojis on your bookmarks lists. I find it to be very helpful when trying to find one list by having that visual aspect to it beyond just the text when in the bookmark list. Needless to say, that if you decide to have your bookmarks show up on your main page the emoji makes it exceptionally easy to find the category you're looking for.
In Malaysia Google Maps is the only usable map navigation app, even Waze uses Google map data. I love Google Maps where it gives me rewards when I write reviews, upload pictures videos, help them improve the map. I tried using Apple Maps, I love the interface but the data is either inaccurate or just filled with spam businesses which takes several days for the system to take down upon reporting, and no street view on Apple Maps.
I’ve started to use Apple Maps for navigation and Google Maps for everything else (research, Timeline, lists, etc.) It’s working out pretty well for me!
Apple use to have a single tap END button however it caused screen burn in, which is now also why it's a lot less cluttered with stagnant coloured buttons. It makes sense as when youre using it to navigate your outside in direct sunlight which is when the screen is at its brightest point. Apple Maps also does support offline maps.
I have both apps on my phone. I recently started using apple map because it shows which direction I’m facing. I find it to be very helpful when I go hiking. I do appreciate the offline map feature of google map though because you know sometimes there’s no signal in the wilderness.
The thing holding back Apple Maps is their lack of reviews. If they cut Yelp and came out with their own review system, it could easily overtake Google Maps imo
Overtake?! Hmm... Doubtful. Considering more people use Android and Google globally that isn't going to sprout as much data as Google has already amassed. iOS pocket has 27% global market share.
@@Ferrichrome I live in the USA... And yet Morrissey sang it best "America is not the world". Blame American teens for this trend in iOS. They like their grandparents, seek simple tech with very little function.... They just want green bubbles or blue bubbles or whatever bubble they think is the bad one. It's electronic racism I tell ya!)
Nice review but it would have been cool to have included a comparison of Transit directions convenience and accuracy on both apps as well. Important use-case for many.
Android user here with Google maps, here in NYC Google maps actually tracks the live position of subways and I believe it does the same for bus. So you can plan on which train you want to take. It does this either through a transit API or more accurately crowd sourced data. It also shows you how crowded the trains are and calculates which train route is faster through transfer based on the real time positions of the trains. Also it mixes transit options, so you can take a train to a ferry to a train. or if the place you are going is in a transit desert, it gives you transit options as close as possible and estimates the Lyft price for each route so you can pick the best one for your wallet from whichever transit station Can someone who commutes with public transit with apple tell me how it works
Not a huge fan of how Apple Maps looks after using Google Maps for so long, but I might need to give it another try after all these years. Seems like it would be very useful for just when Im driving around town and need to get from Point A to Point B. Google Maps will most likely stay as my primary maps app though. Also, Google Maps was super useful for when I was in NYC using the subway system. Gave me step by step directions on when I what lines I should take, when/if I would need to change lines. It made it so simple.
@@ianferneepr5648 Yes I just noticed that after reinstalling and looking at all the settings. Apple Maps looks better than I remembered. Also nice how it syncs with an Apple Watch and youll get a vibration on the wrist when youre nearing a turn. Will be using Apple Maps for Point A to B like I said, but sticking to Google when looking for places to eat and such.
@@CU-Later yeah this is basically what I do. I use Google Maps for search and discovering things for the most part but Apple Maps for car, transit, biking, and pedestrian navigation. I think it just destroys G Maps for the navigation piece - the experience is way nicer, better sounds, better Apple Watch integrations, and the UX is significantly better & more detailed imo. Also the AR walking directions is much smoother than G Maps AR walking directions
Also another feature that might be useful for other users is the Terrain map layer in G. Maps, which shows the topographic map instead of the default one.
I think you should have included walking directions/functionality as well. As someone who travels weekly, I find Apple Maps to be superior when walking. A great feature is Look Around, by pointing your camera at the buildings around you, will refine your location when in dense cities. As well as give augmented reality directions when needed.
It would be a dream come true, if google and apple collaborated to create a common standard/interface (wouldn't be the first time) for map data and reviews. Imo such things should be platform independent and also it would allow google and apple (and other competitors) to capitalize more on the integration in their platforms rather than the information provided
Apple Maps looks really nice, but when you can’t find opening hours, updated locations for stores or get accurate travel times ,it just doesn’t matter.
I’ve been using Apple maps exclusively for the past 4 years. I love the UI and what it actually displays on the screen, I use the directions box on the top left primarily rather than the blue line for guidance which is so much clean compared to google maps which is always cluttered. Also, Google Maps never displays what street you’re on which is annoying, It’s like you know where you’re going or you know where you are but not both.
The one feature that always takes me back to Apple Maps is the destination location when navigating. Google places it in relation to where you are (i.e. north if the destination is north of you). Apple Maps always places it at the top of the screen so your arrow/location is always at the bottom of the screen. Being able to switch between route overview and focused view is also easier on Apple Maps.
I HATED this about Google Maps. However, I checked and you can change this in Google Maps to have the destination always at the top. (However I still far prefer Apple Maps for two main reasons. Context directions ie. "The second left after the stop sign" vs Googles 100 ft type of directions. Apple's is far superior. Directions: SOOOOOO many time Google maps tries to be too smart, only to be extremely stupid. It will take you on side streets and back ways because in theory it is a shorter distance, however, there are so many turns and stops and it is usually through neighborhoods with speed limits and bumps that ends up being far slower and convoluted. This has happened for myself and when I'm in Rideshare ALOT. Many times it takes you through parking lots instead of streets. It is beyond stupid.
Here in the UK Google Maps still has way more POI data but that's about it. Apple Maps is more accurate when it comes to lane guidance, speed limits, toll zones, road layouts, road closures etc. It has improved so much over here
If you have an apple watch, apple maps is the way to go. Don't even have to look at your phone. The watch pulses and let's you know both what and when. I use both apps because of the watch l now use apple maps constantly.
Google maps is way better though for longer trips cause of the crowd sourced info on speed traps and traffic health. Once Apple get those, I’ll switch because I already prefer Safari over Chrome and etc.
An extremely well-balanced and fair review. I work from home, I don't travel that much and when I get in the car there's 90% chance I know where I'm going or how to get there with little to no assistance from a maps app. Apple Maps is my default but I'll venture into Google Maps from time to time (probably less than a dozen times in a year). Of course it's not surprising that Google was the winner as their entire business model is based on getting every scrap of information they can to keep their advertising business model afloat. As much as I love Apple products and services I don't think Apple Maps can ever catch up to Google Maps simply because it's not a core function of Apple's business. I'm sure Apple has a crack team of talented engineers and marketing experts working daily to improve the experience but it's never going to be as robust as Google's because unlike Google they don't rely on the maps app to be a primary profit center compared to Google.
My take on this. I’m from the Caribbean and we mostly use google maps or Waze as the road networks are simple. When I was in Miami in June, google maps had us taking the wrong turns at the wrong times. Apple Maps have so much context we never missed a turn off and it was able to show complex roadways as opposed to google maps. I know what to use strictly for my USA trips going forward.
The reason there were undue U-turns in the navigation was probably due to either lane change route safety (feeling you may get into an accident ) or the fuel efficiency setting... As in it probably felt you wasted more fuel idling at a light than just making a u-turn. That's how i interpreted it when it happened to me on occasion.
Fuel efficiency? You burn more fuel driving the car than staying still. Officers will keep their cars on while on parking because turning the car off and on will burn more fuel. So no, that’s not the reason. The real reason is that it may “think” that there’s no way to turn, or that it’s under construction which usually will show but idk, who knows.
@@jaerg91usually there's several routes for these cases, idk why it didn't show here but I have this exact "issue" almost everytime for x or y reason, you just need to click on the other route
Personally, I like Apple Maps more. Although I'm from Germany and a lot of these features you've got in the US aren't available here, I love it for it's easiness to use. One thing I especially like is how good and reliable it works with CarPlay. Voice commands just work well and thanks to the intuitive design I'm able to navigate quick and simple when driving
I really enjoyed this comparison. I’d love to see more like this (comparing popular but similar apps). Great stuff! Wish we could blend both of the apps!
one cool thing thats integrated in Apple maps here in germany. I don know if its also available in the us. is that you can see most of the radarcameras and i also says you if there is one in fron of you like 50-100 meters before.(164-328 feet)
Apple Maps has sucked for far too long, but last Fall I made the full switch because the experience was way better than Google Maps and Waze. Where Waze relies heavily on user reports to know that roads are closed, Apple pulls from sources to automatically know or detect that roads are closed. It got to the point that Apple Maps was getting me to my destination faster than Waze every single time. When I went to Japan with my family we relied heavily on Google Maps for transit directions. It was fine but after 5 days we were tired of it underestimating transfer times and the alternate options weren’t great. The rest of the trip we used Apple Maps and we have no issues navigating Japan’s rail networks. We were even able to set preferences to use our Japan Rail Pass on the JR lines which saved us money over the metro lines often recommended by default on Google Maps. The Apple Maps experiences is also great here in NYC. The addition perk of having my Apple Watch buzz me before turns when using Apple Maps on my iPhone is also nice.
I prefer Apple Maps for actual navigation, both driving and walking. It happened so many times that i was super confused about the walking directions on Google Maps. But for discovering new places, Google Maps is a must!! Regarding transit navigation, i dont have a favorite, even though Google probably does a slightly better job there. It’s a bit annoying switching between the apps though 😃
my tady máme v CZ Mapy.cz, které jsou nejvíce detailnější mapovou appkou. A co se týče Apple Maps na navigaci v autě, byla by užitečná kdyby měla databázi popisných čísel domů.
The main reason why I like Apple Maps over Google Maps is navigation on interstates or big highways because Apple Maps tells you based on your location in which lane you should be to avoid right/left turn only lanes or which is the recommended lane if you are approaching an exit. Something that Google Maps similarly does, but it is somewhat confusing for me when I am driving since it tells you for example " in 1.2mi be in this lane". It is a small thing, but I find it the compelling argument for me choosing Apple vs Google.
One thing to not about Apple’s street view is that it’s actually more advanced. It actually treat things with depth meaning that you can tap a side of a building in the distance and it will take you to the point closest to it. It also makes movements seem more natural. I think this was done using a combination of LiDAR installed on the street view car and some computational depth calculation which I find really cool.
One thing I think should be emphazised is just how much data google collects when you use their services.. Apple actually annonymizes location services information like routing, traffic or nearby points of interest. They also have something called fuzzing which I didn't look into very much tho it's supposed to hide where you want to go I think. Apple Maps also stores the information where you have been locally on your phone and any info that is going out to a server is disassociated from your appleID and annonymized. It sure isn't the most private App out there but it beats google by miles! Just imagine all the data they collect from google maps users...
I’ve had some pretty bad experiences with Google Maps navigation. The first incident was probably the worst. I was driving down the interstate and decided to add a stop to a Sam’s Club to get some gas (had been in the area once before, so I was sort of familiar with how to get there already). Google had me get off the interstate one exit early even though Sam’s was very close to the next exit’s interchange. It had me go down some back road through the woods with a low speed limit. At one point, it told me to turn down a grassy path (not even a gravel/dirt road). I couldn’t even go that way because a tree was down, showing how infrequent that path gets used. I kept going straight passed more sketchy woods houses until I got to the back of the Sam’s parking lot. I was so blown away that that was the PREFERRED route Google Maps wanted to use. I could’ve just waited one more exit, turned left, immediately turned left again, and been where I wanted much quicker and so much easier. After a few more bad (but not quite so horrible) experiences with Google Maps navigation, I’ve swapped to using Apple Maps. However, I still search Google Maps if I want to find new places like restaurants since Apple Maps doesn’t always have everything on the map (like the places don’t show up in search, and scrolling over the location on the map doesn’t reveal anything there).
I've started using Apple Maps in Portugal when driving because it's surprisingly more accurate and safer. Google Maps has taken me on a number of routes in the past year that are actually dead ends. Switching to Apple Maps gave me a corrected and simplified route. But I use a mixture of the two, for all the reasons you cited.
Same here in The Netherlands, Google has sent me to some closed private roads and almost tried sending me on a bike lane with a car! For navigation, Apple Maps it is. but for finding my way around a city or finding a restaurant, Google it is.
I don't know about other countries but here in Mexico Apple Maps you can never find most of the places you need to find, neither reviews nor info about closed streets, etc. So if you come here and need to find a place never use Apple Maps.
I see these (and Waze) more as complementary apps. For me: - Waze is for my commute and driving into heavily congested areas like downtown - Google Maps has a better interface for looking up directions at a starting location other than where you currently are - Apple Maps is what I’ll use for walking/public transit due to its tight integration with my Apple Watch - allowing me to leave my phone in my pocket. That same feature is also great when I’m going someplace new because the haptic taps on my wrist will alert me to an upcoming turn or stop (I intensely dislike audible directions, so don’t use them). TL;DR use the app for the use-case you need in the moment
Another great feature of Apple Maps is if you have an Apple Watch, the navigation will show up on your watch when you start the trip. Also, a bit before you have to turn, and when you have to turn, the watch will vibrate a few times letting you know about the turn, I love that feature.
One feature that they both lack is a "Repeat Instruction" button (or gesture).* My car nav system has that and I use it all the time. I know where the button is and can tap it without taking my eyes off the road. So when I miss an instruction or even just want assurance as to what I need to do next, I can get that info instantly with my full focus still on the road. Ideally, the "Repeat Instruction" would be an easily executed gesture that you could perform without looking away from the road. Like a downward swipe, perhaps. I know you can use a voice command to request what your next instruction is, but personally I don't like using voice -- so maybe should just loosen up and get into voice commands. *P.S. If there actually is a "Repeat Instruction" button or gesture on either Google or Apple maps, please clue me in -- I've searched and searched for it.
To repeat the instruction in Google Maps you tap on the green instruction bar at the top. Only takes one tap, but if you've swiped ahead to future instructions, one tap on the top instructions bar takes you back to the current/upcoming instruction and then a second tap repeats the verbal instruction. This is on Google Maps v11.92 on a Pixel 4a 5G running Android 13. I'm not sure if it's the same on iOS because Google does do some things differently on iOS and I don't have any iOS devices to test. Hope this helps.
One major bug with Google Maps that I discovered recently is Google Maps will freeze the application when using Apple CarPlay Google Maps version. There is a new bug that requires “always” for your location permission in iOS in order for the Google Maps CarPlay app to work. I did searching online and found many complaints and comments about this bug. But I never found a solution until messing around with the settings during a drive one time.
Haha. It's clear the conclusion is simply this: try both apps where you are and use the one that does what you need better. This is a nice video to point out unique feature of each but YMMV depending on your unique needs and circumstances. No need to re-litigate the maps war. I live in New York and visit Europe every year and I use both -- I tend to prefer Apple because I have an Apple watch but I usually search directions on both and see which have directions that are more clear and logical.
I have an iPhone but I’m team Google Maps all the way. I could literally make this comment thousands of words long, just about Google Maps lol. I live in Scotland and a lot of the Apple Maps features you mentioned don’t exist here - I didn’t even know Apple Maps had street view until right now. I mostly use Maps for looking up places before going there so things like street view, reviews, and house/building numbers are really useful. I also use it on the satellite setting because I prefer how it looks over the default and Google Maps’ satellite images are really good and clear. Apple Maps’ satellite images of my city are blurry and you can’t make out many details, although, they do seem to be more recent than Google’s satellite images so a point to them there. I don’t think Apple Maps will be winning me over any time soon unless they get as much street view coverage as Google and integrate reviews and photos within the app. The latter might well happen soon but unfortunately I don’t think they’ll be catching up to Google street view any time soon hahah
I (Germany) personally like Apple Maps more. I really love the more detailed map, especially in vacation its easier to discover placed that you could visit. Since i'm a Beta user, i can use offline maps in Apple Maps. I think its easier to select the region you want to download on Apple Maps. In google maps the selection marker felt a little buggy. I also think that Apple Maps is loading the online map faster than google maps when you have bad internet connection (germany in a nutshell lol).
For my use case, if Apple Maps did offline maps I’d be 100% sold. I’ve found them incredibly handy, but I’m regularly out of service, which offline maps helps with immensely
One feature you missed is in Car Play Apple Maps is also showing directions in a head up display which Google Maps doesn’t. I am more used to using Google but this feature in the car is actually pulling me to Apple Maps.
One of the big things that keeps me using Google Maps is the ability to choose routes that are optimized for non-gas-exclusive cars, such as hybrids and EVs. Since they optimize their mileage differently than gas cars do, Google Maps offers different routes depending on the car you drive. Really neat, and currently a dealbreaker.
@@bloxblox51not in his specific use cases, plus neither are really better than the other, they have their own upsides and downsides, though I do prefer apple maps
Couple of things to note as well, with G. Maps, I love the satellite view. So much detail there. Also with voice commands, Google also gets pretty specific. (Eg. Turn right after the McDonald's and then turn left) But I turn off voice (except for alerts) so it doesn't interrupt my music.
There's one item really buggy with Google Maps on Android, no idea about iOS. if you share a list with your friends, a mutual created list, you get messages when a new one is added. When you then try to open the notification to the new added place, it just guides you to a random place in the list. Very odd and not helpful at all
Its interesting to see how other people from another country use things. I use mine the other way around; Google maps for long trips and waze around the city. hahaha
This was really interesting. And I can give a perspective on what it's like managing business profiles on both platforms. While apple was the easiest to deal with in proving ownership and being able to access the profile to keep the business location up to date. Apple has this invisible grid thay is hard to move a business. Especially when it comes to fixing seo of a business. Google had hands down been the best and most accurate and crucial for business hits. They still dominate with hit results. The reporting from google about customer feedback and features are way better. Apple may be simple here but they were the hardest to get this up and running. So far Google has this one in the bag as the clear winner in the business management space.
Tbh I always LOVE the style and presence of apple map, but google map has one feature that I can’t refuse: keep north up while routing. If Apple map can issue the new version with this feature, I will definitely use Apple map instead of google map. I think this feature helpful and reliable because keep north up is always the main character of map when map is initially invented. Keeping the north up makes me feel secured, since I’m aware of where I am (in terms of which part of city etc). I love this feature maybe because I’m learning geology in school and I always look the map that way, and once they turn to keep your direction up, I feel confused and uncomfortable. Besides, for the saved places, I’d say google map is much better, not because of the view, but because that one is able to make comment to his/her saved places. For example, if you really like a restaurant, you can not only save the restaurant, but also make comment on what is the best food in the restaurant. For the street view, I confirm that in major cities like LA New York or Chicago, it is much better. However I lived in Minneapolis but no street view is found in Apple map. I remembered that Apple map already took the pictures of these medium cities or small towns, but Idk why they still not public them.
For your Google Maps example going to the gym, going that direction on Lawrence and doing a U-Turn might be faster because you take the El Camino exit after the U-turn and make a right into the gym parking lot. Going the Apple Maps left on El Camino route can sometimes take a while. I’m not sure if the second light is timed when going under the land bridge. So there are two lights the Apple Maps way but only one light the Google maps way. Depending on the time of day and traffic, the Google Maps may be the quicker route if one goes to the gym in the afternoon. Hey! Love the content but I did want to update you on the fact that as of right now, Apple Maps will support offline maps with iOS 17. I am on iOS Public Beta 3, have downloaded offline maps for two trips I've taken (one where there was very little cell service at all) and it has been super simple to use. This comes with Automatic updates (toggleable in settings) as well as being optimized for iPhone storage (toggleable in settings), taking up less space than when I tried it with Google Maps. Also, Apple Maps introduced a feature recently where you can use Look Around (street view) when walking and actually see directional elements implemented with AR. I, again, used it on a trip when exploring a new city and was able to easily locate shops, restaurants and more with this feature. I understand that this video can't be constantly updated but maybe a pinned comment or something in the description could disclose these new addons.
I think it's all about the area. The "level of detail" where Apple Maps tells you about all the crosswalks and lights signals to give you the context of where you have to turn. Or mapping out 3D models trees. Things like these are only available in like 40 - 50 cities, I imagine. Same goes to Google maps though like "immersive view" and all. But in your case apple maps is better in UX and LoD because you live where they have taken time to individually analyse building and area and surroundings and reconstruct their models in the app, therefore; the handsfree voice commands and directions. Otherwise where I live, I sometimes cannot even trust apple maps. Google maps despite having less details, still is better in like 2-3 million cities. That's why it must be very reliable for many many users compared to 40 - 50 cities. So Google Maps is better IMO if you're not in the big cities, navigating through them, or travelling across.
04:40 ... google gives you the fastest route by default. not the most direct in terms of km/mi. google maps will also inform you about traffic jams and slower traffic on roads with unparallelled precision for your trip. As for navigation, Google also has step-by-step navigation with actual pictures of the road where major direction changes happen. Not to mention Streetview.
You forgot one really useful feature on Apple Maps where you can actually share your trip info with your friends/family so they can check at any moment to see where you are. Especially a road trip to visit family who lives hours away from you. If you share your trip info, they can check where you are and how much longer it will take you to arrive without having to worry and call every hour or so to check up on your safety. It's also great when trying to plan ahead on cooking diner if you can see exactly how much time your guest is going to arrive. Also Apple Maps work in China, Google doesn't.
Great video! Personally I tend to use Apple Maps 100% in my day to day life but when ever I travel I will use some combination of the two apps. Also as a few other people mentioned outside of the US things do change significantly. Some countries I’ve been to just are not well supported by either Apple or google. For example I was recently in Bali and I found google did a great job when searching for where to go and finding restaurants but when I would try to get walking directions it would just give me a straight line like across the city, however Apple was terrible for watching but gave great directions.
The features should be weighted. Accuracy in reaching at the right destination and avoiding unnecessary turns should be weighted much higher than finding friends nearby. So providing just 1 point in accuracy doesn’t give justice to the most important feature which is reaching to right destination using best possible route
After using Google Maps for years, I switched to Apple Maps for more accurate directions. Don’t mind the extra button and I don’t care about reviews of restaurants on a GPS app. Hands down Apple Maps has saved me time, aggravation and gas money over Google.
@@I.adair07 New York State, USA. Used Apple Maps when driving to Colchester, Vermont back in February. Saved me an hour drive time over the times I made this trip with Google Maps. Just returned home from Gulfport, Florida. Again using Apple Maps for the entire route. No errors. Easy to add fuel and rest stops. Once again, saved me over an hour with bypassing routes that Google did not. No screen clutter. No drop outs by going offline either. Got that a lot with Google Maps. Both have their purpose and each will be up to individual tastes. I now prefer Apple Maps. Thank you.
I am 100% a defender of Apple Maps in the US and Canada but my biggest knock on it is that it integrates Yelp with everything. I'm convinced that Yelp is only in business because of Apple. Also: Not sure if Google does this but Apple has a business feature that allows businesses to have good control over their location on Apple Maps. This allows customers to place orders, see upcoming concerts, schedule appointments etc in-app for various venues.
Apple’s partnership with Yelp is a bad mark on Apple. I’m in marketing and the outright extortion tactics Yelp uses against businesses is downright criminal. I can’t believe Apple continues to support that shady company.
10:43 this is really useful, Once i went to a town which was old wild west style but couldn't remember where was it, I just went back in time and found out and suggested to friends. Another thing i find useful is it keep track of all the tolls u have crossed so its easy to figure out later and pay.
I don't know if Apple maps allows this but in Google maps you can save any portion/area of map for offline use. This is especially useful if are planning a long road trip and encounter phone signal outage.
I’ve found that often google maps gives the final instruction for a turn way too late, as in, when there’s not enough time for me to merge into the turning lane.
My favorite feature for Apple Maps and the reason I use it primarily is the compatibility with my Apple Watch. Not only do I have a quick and easy view of what’s coming up with that in addition to my phone, it also will vibrate when a turn is coming up, with different vibrations for left and right. Definitely more of a niche use case since it requires an Apple Watch, but a really cool and useful feature if you have one.
10:50, yeah HUGE point on that for sure! Have literally done both those things (meals and adding up business commutes for taxes). Neat to know Apple Maps can do a lot but I've really enjoyed and had no issue with Google Maps.
An interesting comparison between the two! Another issue is the amount of data that is used, if your contract with the network provider charges on that basis. There are things that can be done to minimise it, such as pre-loading the planned route via a cheaper to use router at home etc. There are lots of sites that can advise on this topic. The other matter is that both of them are dependent on the availability of communications where you start from. There are parts of the world where it has no access to the map in use. Looking on the bright side, apps like this CAN access up to date maps (when there is a network connection), compared with sat nav systems that carry local copies of maps on board - but we do not actually know how accurate the updates are either. I use Google maps to browse around planned routes on my desktop, and the maps are often out of date, and often their street view output is not compatible with the overhead view - in effect when zooming in, the version changes; weird. The accuracy of this probably depends a lot on their interface with various highway authorities globally, of course.
My Google maps gives intuitive voice commands. One thing I notice as a Android user that Google maps is so much better then on iOS don't know why but time after time I'm with someone using Google maps on their iphone and it doesn't act the same for example like on this video making the user take a little less convenient route to destination. And with Android and Google Assistant is really well integrated with Google maps
I recently had a parcel delivery job, I was going to a house the other day, using apple maps. It was telling me to go down this one road, instead of turning and then turning on the the correct road. So at first I thought, okay the house is quicker access this way. I go do the road, apple maps said you have arrived at your destination, on the right. Well on the right was indeed the house, but it was the backyard that was fenced in. For some reason it it didnt want me to take me to the front of the house on the correct street.
I wish either app would allow you to open another tap when navigating on a current one: I often use both at the same time to see a final destination then another to look at a detour without having to end my current navigation. This is handy on road trips.
min 5:28 apple takes information from yelp only if you are in the USA. In the rest of the world it takes infos from TripAdvisor, even if your phone is set to be in the USA but you physically aren't
@@djplonghead5403 Still, Apple is not a tech Startup and even has more money to invest into it.. At least they are improving. Still more potential.
I live in France and i use Apple Maps daily. It’s more than enough for me but it lacks key features still, like bike navigation….
I’d say Apple is pretty good in uk tbh, especially for walks with its AR feature
I actually prefer the design of Apple Maps, but what I love so much about google is the amount of reviews compared to apple which is often lacking
Nobody uses garbage apple apps
Agreed. I like the design and minimalism of Apple Maps. I do wish the reviews were better, but I honestly finding myself just looking it up on Google for that and just getting place to place, the UI is good enough for me

@@mr.infante Tell us something we don't know and that isn't on Google Maps😅👍
Apple advises of speed traps too as well as how long my commute will plus alternate roots. Google has had a definitive head start though does a few things better.
@@Murillos1 Apple Maps is my primary navigation app and is underrated, however google maps is better to explore around, and it’s constantly getting updated, so new buildings and addresses sometimes don’t show up in Apple Maps, or the location is not precise, in those instances I use Google maps.
Same. Although I also use Maps for informations because in France it is more reliable for opening hours.
Same here. I love how my Apple Watch is integrated with Apple Maps.
I use Apple Maps on my iPad to check if there is a new place
Just to add a couple new things for Apple Maps with iOS 17: Find My is now kind of integrated, people don’t show up directly on the map but they do show up in search so you can easily get directions to them. Offline maps are also now available
I thought the offline maps was a standard feature but it turns out it’s just iOS 17.
@@lebedsam1357 Apple maps offered the offline maps the last few years
@@lebedsam1357it is a standard feature. Why would it being in an iOS update make it anything but?
I think apple maps are amazing it really feels like your‘re in a game...
Doesn’t apple have street view?
Apple Maps uses TripAdvisor in France, that’s nice here, better since the open contributions, but sure thing there is room to improve .
This is the first time I'm seeing why Yelp is still used. I always thought who uses yelps? Google a restaurant and read or add reviews right on the search result, no need for a separate app for that. Now I see why, Apple keeping them on a lifeline.
@@Quentame74 yeah in Spain they also use that I really like it I think it’s very useful

YESS!!!!! I really like that feature as well
How do I enable this?

I think the main thing going for google maps is that it works mostly everywhere in the world. I live in South Africa and google maps is great for suggesting safer route options whereas Apple maps does not do that. That may also be why Google maps suggests you to go past your slipway turn of to make a u turn, because most of the world drive on the left side of the road. Letting you go past the slipway and making you do a u turn. I might be wrong though.
You are 100% on that. Google maps is amazing in South Africa.
What do you mean by "most of the world driving on the left"? Surface-wise or population-wise?
Wow I did not know they suggest safer driving options. I’d really like this for the U.S. especially in cities like Chicago and Atlanta
Google dominates in Africa. It's like they just care. I have directions for even really remote locations in Uganda
All countries that have left-hand traffic combined make up about 30% of the earth's population, I wouldn't call that "most of the world".
I've turned off vocal instructions using haptics and looking at my watch.
If you use a WearOS watch you get the same integration that apple gives you with their watch.
Everything you mentioned fully automated with Android devices too ;) That said, historically and till this day, apple=more steps+more user input required while Androids=less steps, more automation. His video once again showed proof of that too. Too many hidden stuff is a headache for many people.
Apple Watch navigation alerts are awesome. The haptics are directional.
Got to figure out how to disable notifications on Apple Watch while using navigation with CarPlay. Having this haptics on the wrist while driving is annoying as hell.
It would be really nice if you would talk about how they compare for transit, biking, walking, etc. Not everyone gets around by car.

I swear ppl be saying the most useless reasons as to why its better😂😂😂
I always use both. Google maps for discovery and Apple Maps for literally everything else
❤
agree, Google maps works well here in southeast asia

Nice review but it would have been cool to have included a comparison of Transit directions convenience and accuracy on both apps as well. Important use-case for many.
Exactly. The comparison is good but where I come from 80% of the people are using navigation apps just for public transit.

Very useful in San Fran. As there are some difficult walks for the elderly!
Apple kind of has an equivalent for that, don’t know why he didn’t compare the different layers (driving, satellite, etc.) in the video
I think you should have included walking directions/functionality as well. As someone who travels weekly, I find Apple Maps to be superior when walking. Google Maps do that even before Apple Maps released
It would be a dream come true, if google and apple collaborated to create a common standard/interface (wouldn't be the first time) for map data and reviews. Apple Maps looks really nice, but when you can’t find opening hours, updated locations for stores or get accurate travel times ,it just doesn’t matter.
every store has opening times and the travel times and directions are more accurate,. at least here in Australia
Yeah apple always has better UI google has more functions always been that way even though I mainly use android luckily u can use both on iOS
Apple Maps for driving and navigation in general and Google Maps for looking around and discovering places
Click on the compass, that "red and white arrow" and the map display is changed to the way you like
Here in the UK Google Maps still has way more POI data but that's about it. Apple Maps is more accurate when it comes to lane guidance, speed limits, toll zones, road layouts, road closures etc. It has improved so much over here
Yea, it’s quite a lot better here, especially in public transport
If you have an apple watch, apple maps is the way to go. Don't even have to look at your phone. The watch pulses and let's you know both what and when.
I use both apps because of the watch l now use apple maps constantly.
Google maps is way better though for longer trips cause of the crowd sourced info on speed traps and traffic health. Once Apple get those, I’ll switch because I already prefer Safari over Chrome and etc.
Sorry, that is feature useless. I’m not sure what function it was but it vibrated like seven times annoyingly.
I know what to use strictly for my USA trips going forward.
that one friend in the middle of the Ocean 💀💀

Apple Maps has better driving directions in Japan. I can’t use google at all.
Dont forget about the far less bugs
I prefer Apple Maps for actual navigation, both driving and walking. It happened so many times that i was super confused about the walking directions on Google Maps. But for discovering new places, Google Maps is a must!! Regarding transit navigation, i dont have a favorite, even though Google probably does a slightly better job there. It’s a bit annoying switching between the apps though 😃
I agree, Apple Maps when driving/navigation. Google maps when not
The UI for transit is pretty bad on Google though. The lines do not exactly follow the real life subway lines and their colors are not always correct
my tady máme v CZ Mapy.cz, které jsou nejvíce detailnější mapovou appkou. A co se týče Apple Maps na navigaci v autě, byla by užitečná kdyby měla databázi popisných čísel domů.
Lol. Apple maps doesn’t work in Middle East yet, it’s only a Satellite image, No Directions, Nothing at all!
Middle East is desert
Middle East poor
If features like social is 1 point, navigation itself deserves 10 points.
I don't know about other countries but here in Mexico Apple Maps you can never find most of the places you need to find, neither reviews nor info about closed streets, etc. So if you come here and need to find a place never use Apple Maps.
I see these (and Waze) more as complementary apps. For me:
- Waze is for my commute and driving into heavily congested areas like downtown
- Google Maps has a better interface for looking up directions at a starting location other than where you currently are
- Apple Maps is what I’ll use for walking/public transit due to its tight integration with my Apple Watch - allowing me to leave my phone in my pocket.
I found that really annoying. It is constantly buzzing my wrist when I use Apple maps
@@mkevin88SAME HERE! If it’s a long drive, I want to throw it out of the window 🫤🫤🫤 But it was too expansive 🫠🫠
Same for Google maps and wearos watches axtually
Well that’s great they just announced it yesterday with iOS 17 😂😄
@@4zv4l38 heheh yep. I immediately thought of my comment lol
It’s out now !
One feature you missed is in Car Play Apple Maps is also showing directions in a head up display which Google Maps doesn’t. I am more used to using Google but this feature in the car is actually pulling me to Apple Maps.
Ever since Apple tried sending me down the wrong way in a one-way street, they were dead to me.
Less people use electric cars so Apple Maps is better
And google map has trash route like the guy showed in thevid so it doesn’t matter
Fair enough
@@bloxblox51not in his specific use cases, plus neither are really better than the other, they have their own upsides and downsides, though I do prefer apple maps
google maps is wayyyy better... i live in middle east, you will never hear ppl using apple maps lol, either u use google maps or waze.
Both are american apps, thanks for support
@@bradIeyyy Of course, they are allies. Especially Saudi-Arabia
Couple of things to note as well, with G. Maps, I love the satellite view. So much detail there. Also with voice commands, Google also gets pretty specific. (Eg. Turn right after the McDonald's and then turn left) But I turn off voice (except for alerts) so it doesn't interrupt my music.
What’s wrong with apple‘s satellite view?
There's one item really buggy with Google Maps on Android, no idea about iOS. if you share a list with your friends, a mutual created list, you get messages when a new one is added. When you then try to open the notification to the new added place, it just guides you to a random place in the list. Very odd and not helpful at all
Apple Maps will have offline maps in iOS 17. Apple Maps will also have real time charging station for electric cars availability.
I use Apple Maps for driving around town, google maps for 1hr+ trips, and Waze for long roadtrips
Its interesting to see how other people from another country use things. I use mine the other way around; Google maps for long trips and waze around the city. hahaha
Funny thing is that Google now owns Waze and integrates their data in Google Maps
Google map is getting worse by day, now you can’t even see shops without searching for them. All they show before searches are ads
There isn’t traffic on Lawrence that direction, but there is traffic on el.camino that direction .
King posted
The lane markings and details like trees seems only be in a few select cities. None are showing in Baltimore for example.
04:40 ... google gives you the fastest route by default. not the most direct in terms of km/mi. google maps will also inform you about traffic jams and slower traffic on roads with unparallelled precision for your trip.
Exactly the same feature is in Google Maps, and you can share it with your non-iphone family too 😉
You have that also on Google Maps and you actuallya lso have permanent location sharing. And it works even if your friends are not on iPhone.
I live in Poland and Gmaps is better
I live in Germany, apple is better
@@bradIeyyy Wo wohnst du? Apple Maps ist scheisse in SH und Hamburg.
Apple Maps doesn’t leave the screen when your phone locks. Huge selling point
Where do you live? Canada, US, Europe?
Thank you.
@@Tailsnpaws goood to know!
Apple Maps is so much better
Can you talk about the best public transit app?
10:43 this is really useful, Once i went to a town which was old wild west style but couldn't remember where was it, I just went back in time and found out and suggested to friends. Another thing i find useful is it keep track of all the tolls u have crossed so its easy to figure out later and pay.
Toronto here. Using transit, Apple Maps suggested a 1.5 h route that Google Maps suggested a 40 minute alternative for.
I don't know if Apple maps allows this but in Google maps you can save any portion/area of map for offline use. This is especially useful if are planning a long road trip and encounter phone signal outage.
For me, it’s all about the voice commands, turn right/left after these traffic lights is so much easier to understand than turn left/right in 1000ft
Super useful video! Thanks :)
I love Apple for biking navigation in NYC and London -- the Siri alerts blend well with music/podcasts, & the pop-ups on Apple Watch are a nice touch
Update: Apple added offline maps already
A very helpful feature on Apple Maps is to share your ETA and live location, so that people now when you arrive
