The Future of Bitcoin Mining and the Environment | Cryptoland

  • Bitcoin uses as much energy as a small country to secure the blockchain. Is crypto mining strengthening America's power grid and hastening the transition to renewables, or propping up the ailing fossil fuel industry while making the climate crisis worse? It depends on who you ask.
    Follow correspondent Alice Hines to Texas, which is quickly becoming a global Bitcoin mining hotspot, followed by a panel discussion on whether Bitcoin lives up to the promises of its biggest supporters or reflects the fears of its strongest environmental critics.

    If you wanna be successful, you must take responsibility for your emotions, not place the blame on others. In addition to make you feel more guilty about your faults, pointing the finger at others will only serve to increase your sense of personal accountability. There's always a risk in every investment, yet people still invest and succeed. You must look outward if you wanna be successful in life.

      In my opinion cryptocurrency isn’t to blame for our current climate problem. We should definitely figure out how to use our technology in a sustainable way which I think is possible with more development. There are many other critical factors that are straining the environment that should be looked into and the focus of people’s concern.

    • @Aaron565
      @Aaron565 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      btc is a consensus network. unlike central government where the largest authorities determine all outcomes, ANYONE can contribute to btc consensus.
      no energy is "wasted." all computations contribute EQUALLY because they are successful RANDOMLY. if it were predictable who is delegated consensus next, governments would kill them. if the energy prerequisites were zero, corporations would seize consensus by running more computers at efficiencies of scale.
      btc is a game theoretical system. since btc has deterministic issuance and adjusts its computational difficulty, miners can simulate profitability into the future, which INCENTIVIZES efficiency between capital, energy and hardware markets. meanwhile
      the net emissions benefit is reducing emissions for otherwise isolated, previously flared facilities. the net emissions benefit is incentivization of cheaper renewable energy. the net emissions benefit is there is no longer a need for banks, governments, accountants, lawyers, or middlemen because settlement is automatic because its DECENTRALIZED. by delegating risk and distributing trust, no agreement can be cheated or reneged.

Trading went smooth for me as I was able to raise over 9.2 BTC when I started at 1.5 BTC in just a few weeks implementing trades with signals and insights from Patricia Reo, I would advise y'all to trade your asset rather than hodl for a future you aren't sure about or hold it and risk loosing all.

    Riot uses 0% renewable energy. If Riot didn't exist, 100% of the renewable energy on their grid would be used by the grid. That means that, when companies like Riot use electricity, it's using the energy that scales to meet market demand. Typically, that's Natural Gas and Coal power plants. It's misleading when miners say they're x% sustainable energy because they're on the grid; the reality is they're likely 0%.

    So let me break this down and unpack this for everyone. Heat pollution is the worst of it all. To produce electricity you produce heat as a byproduct. To transfer electricity you produce heat as a byproduct. To use electricity for the ASICS you produce heat as a byproduct. All this heat has to go somewhere. So besides carbon output from the electricity production you have tons of btu heat energy being dumped into the natural ecosystem. So besides pollution via carbon output you now have tons of heat pollution that is heating the planet up like a greenhouse as a collective with other similar issues at hand causing more of the same. All for what? Does paper money and a basic accounting method use all of that electricity to produce all that heat during the hottest years of the history of our country.

    • @greatreset5205
      @greatreset5205 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just Googled this and apparently the heat we produce is miniscule (relatively.) It's only 1/10,000th (0.0001%) of what we get from the sun. That's why greenhouse gasses are the main problem because they trap that's sun heat in the atmosphere.

    • @joshuac673
      @joshuac673 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@greatreset5205 that’s the base problem. The rest is compounding on itself. Even if it was sustainable energy we still use the electricity to produce heat. So let’s try to make sense of all of this. If you put a crypto farm in a cold place to displace the heat produced by the ASICS. The heat produced warms the environment around it as a micro climate. Then compound multiple hundreds of these crypto farms around the world. It’s common sense to say we are making more heat than we have in years past before cryptocurrency existed. It’s also common sense to say we are making more heat and using more electricity than ever while we try to navigate through climate change/global warming throughout the world. Just because you can doesn’t always mean you should. The world has the highest population it’s ever seen as far as human beings go. So why does people think crypto is the answer.

But without that energy to cool the miners down would that mean the miners would be heating the environment even more? of course not because we live in reality and the miner would literally melt and brake down from its own heat it produces so I dont know what your really worried about here the environment will be fine reality will insure it

    Couple of observations: Proof of Stake enriches those who are already wealthy. Proof of Work is merit based but takes energy as it's primary input. Since we haven't fully moved to renewables globally there will be CO2 emissions. However mining is a zero sum game so there is a strong tendency towards renewables since fossil fuels will never trend towards 0 cost. CO2 per transaction is the wrong metric as the energy is primarily used to secure the network including all past transactions. Also this piece ignores the existence of layer 2 networks such as the lightning network making Bitcoin transactions cheap, fast and secure.

      And about layer 2 and Lightning network, it has been stable for use for at least 2 years, making bitcoin transactions orders of magnitude less expensive than most “cheap” blockchains while emitting ZERO CO2 per transaction and having all the security from the base Bitcoin layer. That discussion "panel" wasn't very representative lol, would have been interesting having someone from the bitcoin mining council for example. Also digiconomist's math have become a meme in the bitcoin community due to how bonkers they are - he consider for example that the average lifetime of an ASIC is 1.5 years, despite having 6 years ASICS still trading on the secondary market. It seems like he's also the guy who pushed "Bitcoin Mining on Track to Consume All of the World's Energy by 2020" back in 2017, at least he's the source being quoted in various articles.

      You don't want a pubco aka mining council you want private miners who have been in the game for 5+ years who have grown faster than the pubco's lol. (In terms of growing their operations for reinvesting not selling shares)
      Look at genesis for example

    The discussion should be about getting our electrical grids on more renewable resources. Once that happens, then we can talk about how we use that renewable electricity. Right now they are just saying the same thing about how bad the electrical grids are, but are trying to make arguments saying the same thing for some reason. There is so much energy from the sun that isn't used. Yes, manufacturing solar isn't the best right now, but just like cars have gotten better over time, acceptance and investment will make solar even better. Same goes for wind, tidal, geothermal, and others. I am not anti fossil fuel at all, I just think we need more renewables for a better balance and have all the energy sources at our disposal. Stopping crypto mining is just putting a Band-Aid on a severed limb.

      Where's the base load supply supposed to come from that's renewable?

      Otherwise where is the money in green energy? Saving people money doesn't typically make you money, and it definitely doesn't do so time and time again over the years like proper investments do, and it's been a very very long time since R&D capability was actually a fundamentally important part of any energy corporation. This is the sort of market forces that we totally need to push everything that is bad and no longer serves humanity adequately towards the right direction for our futures.
