Why does the scene and outfits in last fight look modern
In the original material by the Greeks, it just occurred to me that there's a sympathetic angle on Ares I don't believe anyone's taken before. Aphrodite, his Paramore, is literally the goddess of love, yet still won't leave her loveless marriage for him. I'd have a lot of anger to work through too!

1- Amphipolis under siege: after he actually LEFT and couldn't hear that she said it, she didn't need to say that she felt something then, i.e: it was HER GENUINE FEELINGS that she denied in his presence
2- Coming Home: when she told him "he always got to her" that's when he actually was MORTAL, thus again no spell, no tricks, GENUINE FEELINGS!

Yes, he carried that well when he had it. When it was cut he first revealed it in the final episode of Hercules. Even Iolaus noticed it:
