    I have the same saw. Had it for about 3 years and love it! It's a great cheap saw that cuts really well when you step it up to a bigger tooth chain. It cuts as good as my brother's huskie for a 3rd of the price. I'm sure it won't last as long but we shall see.

    Most of the time people have trouble starting 2 and 4 cycle small engines is because they only start it when they need it. You should see my calendar, every July and January: 1) Start and run chainsaw. 2) Start and run generator 3) Start and run water pump (July only, hard to pump water in January here). All the things I only use occasionally get started 2x per year no matter what and I let them run a bit.

    These are great saws for the money. After several uses, they tend to become hard to start, as they are tuned very lean from the factory. Richen up high and low speed screws as necessary and they will start right up and run great. Use good oil at 40 or 50:1 and they will run forever.

      If you run a pre-mixed (canned fuel) 50:1 ethanol free, never ethanol fuel, they stay easy to start and fuel doesn’t age and collect moisture half as fast.

    I had a older 4218A, it was one of my favorite saws. I had it for three years. never had a problem with it. My best friend needed a saw and loved it so much, he bought it from me for 90 bucks. Its been a year and a half later and he still limbs and bucks logs with it. He blushes when he mentions that saw. I would buy one again in a heartbeat but I have my older Husqvarna 340 and 353. Husqvarna has made Poulan since 2006.

    I have 2 old stihl saws and I use them a few times a year. I always pour the gas out of the tank and then I crank a let it idle and even choke it a bit when it starts to die. Once it runs out of gas and dies I remove the spark plug and shoot an ounce of 2 cycle oil in the cylinder, refit the plug and pull the cord a few times to lube the rings. I have went over a year without using the bigger of the 2 and it always cranks up without issue. To me, fresh gas for a saw is like fresh fruits and veggies for me....
    I have owned poulan, craftsman and they were pretty good saws for the price. For $99 bucks you made a good purchase.

    I bought this exact chainsaw about a year and a half ago. I believe Poulan Pro is a division of Husqvarna and seems like a really nice saw for the price. I felled a few big pines with it, cuts like butter through pine. I even didn't do anything to store it over winter, it fired right up this spring.

    I bought one in 2019 at Tractor Supply for $99. I find that it is cold blooded & takes some time to warm up. But once it is warm it seems to cut really well. I have already replaced the original chain because most of the teeth became damaged. I don't remember cutting any metal metal in any of the trees I've cut down or cut into firewood. So I now have a Oregon S62T chain on it. I did notice that it eats a lot of bar oil. So I check the level about every 5 to 10 mins.
    I did talk my brother into getting one when they were on sale.

    I just bought a refurbished one a week ago for emergencies and cleanup after Dorian.
    PR4016 but the engine sticker says 42cc.
    Running 32:1 premium, starts 2 pulls cold Everytime, Hot starts no problem.
    I replaced the chain with a 63PS3-56 Stihl chain ( and boy she cuts!), gapped the spark plug at .030, when I first checked it it was bellow .015 it didn't even fit my gauge.
    It's been keeping up with the Husqvarna 440 we run at work filling the wood shed.
    Very good investment, got it on sale 100$ Canadian plus an extra 30$ for the new chain and file.
    By no means a pro saw, but a good backup or first saw.

    I bought the same one for $150CDN, I use 40:1 Husky oil and chain oil and changed to an E3 plug, it runs like a top now with zero hesitation, fires in 1-2 pulls on choke then one more off choke to run. Just ordered an Oregon chain and bar which will make it much more efficient. It’s crazy how much difference a chain alone makes with ease of cuts instead of just wasting time and fuel. Cheers

    But I have a pre mixed 50:1 gas that I got with my chainsaw and I am very very confused. That is all I got. I bought a PoulanPro PR3816 today. Do I just pour it in to one hole? There are silicone "pipes" all throughout the inside where I looked and don't want to screw it up. I know more about lawn mowers. On the manual there is something about bar oil and gas, but I have a 50:1 pre-mixture that I bought with the chainsaw today. So what am I supposed to do? Do I have to buy something else? Do I just use what I have? I need some help. I have all the other answers I need but this one. And yes I know what I'm doing otherwise. I'm a strong independent black woman and I don't need no man, I will never depend on a man again. The only thing is I just have a question if someone could tell me what to do about this gas and oil thing? That's all. Thanks, friends! I gotta cut some trees down! No sense in paying crooks to do what I can do for my mother myself!

    Have several Poulans, used them long and hard on big trees, they cut great! Use 93 octane non-ethanol with Stihl synthetic oil, 40:1 in everything, no matter what they call for. My opinion is in comparing chainsaws, people forget about the sharpness of the chain at the time. Keep it sharp and I will out cut my buddy using his expensive Stihl, who doesn't know how sharpen a chain.

    I have a craftsman (rebadged Pouland) that I purchased back in '97 to clean up some land that I had purchased. I cut a lot of wood with it, and never did anything special with the saw other than keeping the chain tension correct, and properly oiled and fueled. I never did anything when I stored it......just shut it off and put it in the case. My garage is not heated and it gets extremely cold where I live in the winter. This past spring the fuel lines finally gave out and had to be replace at the shop ($47.00). Although many do not like these cheap saws I believe that they have there place. They are great for occassional homeowner cleanup use. They are also great as a backup saw, and for those who don't want to spend hundreds on a saw as they don't do heavy-duty cutting. My saw seems to have the same compression as it did on day one, starts and idles perfectly despite being 24 yrs old. Just keep the chain sharp and adjusted and you will be amazed at how well (and inexpensively) these saws get the job done.

    I've been looking around here on TH-cam for those people that own poulan chainsaws like myself and was I surprised that there quite a few people that own at least one and don't have any issues with them one bit. I've got the poulan 3314 and the 5020 and both work flawless and run perfect! I do own a 14 inch Ryobi 2 cycle chainsaw that I only use as my backup chainsaw if all else fails. I have been looking at getting one more to my collection and it's either the husqvarna 120 or the poulan seen here in your video. I've used both once before and liked how well the both run and do the job, but being I'm a poulan product buyer, i may go with this one you bought as your backup saw but both chainsaws are built by husqvarna and built to last if they're taken care of properly. I do appreciate you making this video showing those of us what your backup chainsaw is

    My in-laws got me this chainsaw for Xmas. I didn’t take it out of the box till today - 4 months later. I started it.. made a few cuts.. and noticed the brake bar felt flimsy. Upon closer look.. the brake bar is broken. It has a huge crack in it. And it’s way past the return or exchange period.
    Anyway… needing to cut up a tree.. I used it anyway. Initially it cut great but after only 12-15 cuts it’s not cutting well anymore. The chain is already crap. Is this normal to dull a chain in 15 cuts?

    I own the exact same chain saw. And i love it! i bought a master set of carb adjuster screwdrivers. i found with the cheaper saws like poulan they leave the factory much leaner than the big brands like stihl and husk. having the ability to adjust the carb really helps extend the life of the equipment. lean is great for emisions. however at 50:1 there isnt much lubrication when the saw is running lean. the auguement with power equipment today running 50:1 is that oils today are better and it doesnt require as much oil to acheave the same job as past oils. i run motul 800 in all of my 2 stroke stuff. it is a great oil and has never let me down. here is some fun info on poulan chainsaws, the engine is a design called oxypower. owned by huskavarna. ita a husky engine in a cheaper plastic case. that same engine is also used in the crafstman's 42cc 18" saw. i did ritchen up my chain saws fuel mixture and i run my saw at 40:1 oil raito. also there is an emsision compliance sticker on the saw. it tells you how many hours the engine is predicted to last with factory settings. however usage, abuse, and care will really determine the life of the saw. great video!!

      I have an older poulan 4018....had it for years but now it starts and runs but then dies...won't stay running when under a load. Gap on spark plug seems what everyone recommends. But the adjustments for the carb have some hex-head type stubs and very small at that. Guess making it easy to adjust never came up in engineering or design?

    I actually bought this very same saw for my small & medium duty work and I’m very satisfied with it. I fall trees of about 14” or less, it’s what I use to cut my 12” or less fire wood for splitting... and for wood for my smokers. It’s also the saw I take with me to the cabin and on car camping & fishing trips. And it’s used for trimming our fruit trees. I have used it to fall large trees and to cut large logs, and it does the job as you demonstrated in your video, but I have a larger saw for those jobs that works better. This saw has also proven to be very reliable, and actually gets used more than my larger and much more expensive saws.

    Can you post a video of how to change the bar and install the new blade. I purchased one and didn’t read the instructions so I screwed up my bar and chain and haven’t been able to find a video on this specific one?

    • @GoosePondHideoutWithRob
      @GoosePondHideoutWithRob  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't look for a video to see if one exists. All you do is take the two large nuts completely off. The one's you see in my thumbnail image lower left. The black plastic cover pulls off and then you can pull the bar (blade) off. Take it to the store to find a replacement.

    I have two one with a 14" bar which is now 26 years old all I've done to it was replaced the fuel line and primer bulb due to age they got rotten, and one with a 18" bar just a year old. I love them but I'm not a logger just cut stuff around the farm. They start every time.

    I picked up an old yellow PP4218A at an estate sale for $40, thinking it would need rebuilding. Instead, it ran great and with a new chain was a beast, so it became my “big” saw for anything my little 14” Mac3200 couldn’t handle (which was almost nothing). I’ve had it for 20 years now and only once needed a carb rebuild. It still runs great and I use it regularly on my 8 wooded acres for the really “dirty” jobs like cutting stumps. I often have to sharpen dirt-dulled blades mid-cut with my Dremel tool and diamond rotary bits, but afterwards its good to go again. Not the smoothest running engine at low speed while four-stroking, but it leans out beautifully “in the wood”. I find that Poulans flood easily, giving them an undeserved reputation as hard starters. Just use the choke very sparingly and only to get that first kick when cold. I also use a Stihl 026 Pro for tree felling, but don’t really find it any stronger than my Poulan…..of course I would never use my Stihl in dirt.

    I bought a poulan pro 4218 back in November had a problem keeping it running after 15 minutes took to dealer and they adjusted the carb,. took it out to clear up some limbs three weeks ago and it ran for 5 minutes and was loosing power tried to restart and no compression took it back to the repair shop dealer and they checked it out and said that the piston was scored from running to lean. getting a new poulan pro chainsaw from poulan, did anyone else have this problem? my old poulan chainsaw ran for ever

    I've got several saws. My Stihl MS-251 Wood Boss does the heavy work. My 25 year old Husqvarna is in need of a new carb. OEM carbs aren't cheap, and the aftermarket ones for $20 are 50/50 on if they'll hold up any amount of time. I saw this Poulan Pro at Tractor Supply. These saws seem to be better now than they used to be. For the price as a backup saw, it may be worth it. Thanks for your review, sir.

    Couldnt agree more. So many people blame their saws for not working when they get the fuel mixture wrong. I think another problem is people leave gas sitting in their chainsaw all winter which then goes bad and stops it from wanting to start. Another issue is people ask more from their saws than what they are designed for. So many people burn out the engines in their chainsaws misusing them by doing things beyond the capability of the engine

    I had a Poulan for years probably got 20 hours of good use out of it.The rest of the time i spent either trying to start it,recleaning the carb,replacing fuel lines,scratching my head or putting it back in the shed till next time.I finally threw it away and lowered my bp never to be frustrated again.

    I worked at Lowe's for 9 years in the outdoor lawn and garden area. I started as a sales specialist and worked up to an assistant Store Manager. I saw more Poulan saws returned than anything else in the store. Most of the time it was due to improper fuel. Ethanol gas simply does not last long enough for the casual user. They would fill it up with fuel they mixed for their string trimmer and wonder why it ran for a few minutes then simply stopped. On some of them when you pumped the bulb the fuel tank pressurized but they got no fuel through to the carb. I witnessed this first hand with one we wrote off for the store to use. It seems like they are a crap shoot. When they were swapping between the black and yellow version and the all black version I managed to get an all black one for 25 bucks. Being VERY versed in small engine repair, I keep it running like a top. It is however my emergency saw. It doesn't have the power of my Husqvarna and despite the claims it is not very fuel efficient.

    hey mate, big hi from New Zealand, yeah mate i own one aswell, i have the PN4218 model instead of the PP4218. had mine from brand new once 2009. Done me well , every year i pull it out and fell and buck from start to finish and never had a problem, Good saw, i always place 40:1 ratio in mine, your right common problem with people using chainsaws is they never shake the gas tank pior to filling.every time to start my saw i alway let it warm up in idle for 30 seconds

    Yeah I have a Poulan pr5020 about a 2017 model... it has been a problem child... I replaced the piston ring... cuz it got stuck in the piston... then I started babying it with some fancy lubricants.... now it's okay but at first it was a problem child... has nice balance and has good power... but if it throws it's little Poulan conniption fit.... be prepared to take the whole thing apart and rebuild the whole thing..... right down to the crankshaft... it's fine now,, but it wasn't always....

    Those new Husqvarna Poulans are pretty dam well made. I recomend premixed fuel for those that have a hard time mixing or are not running the saw that often.

    • @GoosePondHideoutWithRob
      @GoosePondHideoutWithRob  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep. As I mentioned in the video, in my opinion the biggest problem source is improper fuel mixing.

    • @MJ-jk9be
      @MJ-jk9be 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just FYI for those who choose to use the pre-mixed fuels. They tend to separate or coagulate within a very short time. If you use it, it would be wise to either run it dry or add a fuel stabilizer to it. I have cleaned or repaired close to 75 carburetors and several dosen fuel systems. The can of pre-mix fuel is only good for about 6 months once its been opened. Hope this helps all those out there.

    My stepfather bought a woodland plot about two years ago, and there was a PP4218avx in one of the garages. He didn't think much of it at the time, since he's fully geared in Stihl products.
    I recently needed to acquire a chainsaw for my own projects and he just gave tme the Poulan. The thing is that the machine hadn't been started in at least 3 years. Fresh gas, a good cleanup: That thing fired right up with 3 pulls.
    It needs a new chain but I think I'm going to like it :)

    I have had one for about a year now my opinion is it's by far underpowered for a 18 inch bar it had plenty of power for the first month or two but now lacks greatly I have tried pre mixed fuel and fuel i mixed same result and the chain has trouble staying tight after a few months of use I have bought aftermarket bar and chain I don't know if I should idle it up or what to give more power

    You are spot on about the mix...I do the same thing-I mix exactly 50:1 for all my 2 cycle equipment. I bought a Poulan 3416 with all the paint still on the bar for $30CAD and all it needed was old fuel that looked too rich drained and I put in my 50:1 (it is a 40:1 saw but it won't overheat/seize as a homeowner clean-up saw) and a small idle adjustment and it is perfect-gifting it to my brother...as for your $99 purchase-absolutely! Bought the big brother PR5020 brand new for $185CAD because too good a value to pass up for a big saw. For my needs-way better investment than $1000 pro saw...1 job and paid for...unless you are a professional logger-these saws are all you will nee-proper maintenance/tune and sharp chains 👍
    Cheers!

    Let me tell u the story on my poulan chainsaw.I also bought mine for 99 but at tractor supply.Worked good the first day,after that was a pain in the butt to start.would take about 15 pulls to start.what i found out was the spark plug was not gapped properly.This is the only problem with these saws,and it gives it a bad name.After i fixed the plug gap this saw starts in 1 or
    2 pulls and we use it in the coldest weather every day.I use this saw more than my stihl saw now. probably one of the best saws ive ever owned.As far as the fuel goes ethenol or non ethenol runs the same with either.Bought the saw 2 years ago
