Stephen Colbert took over as host, executive producer and writer of THE LATE SHOW on Sept. 8, 2015.
I know her work, and have watched all of Hacks, but that video drunkenly pontificating with her dad is my favorite thing. It tugs at my heartstrings and I find it endlessly charming
Always important to emphasize that personal responsibility should be encouraged, but corporate responsibility needs to be legally mandated.
Our system of government has been wrecked by corporations. They financially made sure of that. Neither pure, nor simple.
Yes, and so many climate activists draw a false dichotomy between corporate responsibility and personal responsibility. They are by no means mutually exclusive. If we are to save ourselves and the other lives on this planet, we must view each of our options through both lenses before making any decision, whether as consumers or voters
I agree... Best example is the "Crying Indian" ad. Created and paid for by Coke and Pepsi. Part of a campaign to guilt people into feeling bad about trash, and in parallel getting legislators to get rid of deposits on cans, to make sure there would be more trash.
because we all wanna change the world but no-one thinks about changing himself
@Osc1llateW1ldly Disagree, but I think I get what you were meaning to say.
Unironically Fantastic Fungi is really a fascinating documentary.
I ashroomed you saw it or are you just talking a bunch of shiitake?
The only way pressure will be put onto corporations to change is by not supporting them. But the argument here is that we should just continue to support them because they haven't changed yet? What kind of sense does that make?
There is absolutely zero logical rationale in that excuse.
BE the change you want to see.
Hey, I'm WV born, raised, and currently residing, I am vegan, I'm in construction and tuning out those who don't care about what I care about by watching your show on my work breaks.
Why'd she feel the need to clarify that she was no longer vegan and why did that get a cheer? And it's a bit dishonest to say it's because of corporations...just be honest and say you didn't want to be vegan anymore.
Food is powerful & impowering. How often do we have a choice in front of us that is consequences for the most pressing issues that our species face: environmental collapse, antibiotic resistance, pandemic causing infectious diseases and the biggest driver of animal exploration and suffering caused by humans. Our food choices present us with an opportunity to take a stand against all of these issues and many more.
Hannah: "It's super important for everyone to be vegan"
Also Hannah: "I'm no longer vegan"
You're just confused Hannah. Your first sentiment was correct. Corporations aren't going to just "change" unless people demand something different from them. Corporations just supply the demand.
No they don’t otherwise lobbies wouldn’t exist
Watching from Kentucky; no plans to quit.
You're RIGHT about coal.
Let's not forget that the Manchurian Cantaloupe signed an executive order to allow more coal dust in drinking water...
And VOTE💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
🤣🤣🤣Manchurian Cantaloupe
why would corporations change if people dont't change? People becoming vegan , the corporations will slowly change. that is how change happens from the ground up not top down.
Then she says it’s important for people to go vegan, but I guess not her? 😬
It was the most moronic nonsense
Corporations create demand.. If McDonald's was never there or was a vegan org, that would be the norm for McDonald's.
Ah yes, let’s put pressure on corporations by *checks notes* doing literally nothing? We as individuals have a lot of collective power to accomplish change through our personal actions, including our food choices.
Not doing nothing… putting money in their pockets by buying animal products, encouraging them to keep making animal products 😂 One of the stupidest logic I’ve heard for no longer being vegan
@@mothgirlx6707 yes, I agree. Usually celebrity ex-vegans come up with some sob story about how sick they were because they ate nothing but highly processed, sodium filled fake meats, presumably because they’ve never heard of legumes, whole grains, vegetables, green leafies, fruit, seeds, herbs, spices etc… Top marks to her for coming up with a creative new excuse. 😂
😂 By that logic, we shouldn't vote on elections since one vote doesn't count and instead we should put pressure on large corporations 😂
She doesn't understand what's veganism and why we, as individual, shouldn't support big corporations that are exploiting animals for profit with every purchase we make. #govegan
Lol no.
Quite the opposite. Taking your own analogy, she's saying individual voters must not feel the pressure to change the laws/ govern better. The elected body - irrespective of what party they're from, need to ensure welfare
Just to clarify, I had ethics at one point and I no longer do.
_Audience claps and hoots_
IKR, what the hell is wrong with these people!
Lol so on point
Pro mushroom, anti animal welfare?
I used to be anti-arson, but I went back to paying arsonists to set fires on my behalf because I think it's up to the arsonists to change, not me... in the meantime, I'm going to continue to fund their arson projects. What's that? Why would they change if I'm continuing to make them wealthy by demanding more and more fires? Eh, not my problem, I'm just an individual. Pausing for applause now.
Uh... let's not forget that "individuals" are responsible, too = they're the consumers!! Demand > offer! Duh.
Wildly disappointed that personal accountability ranks so low with Colbert
Right, because he drives a Tesla. I imagine he drives it because he cares about the environment
Humans eat meat, don't cry about it.
@@scarymonsterrs some humans eat meat, not all. some rape and murder. People chose what they think is right. And we make moral progress by deciding as a culture what is and what isn't ok. As an example dog fighting was once ok. This particular point is about killing animals for enjoyment and or carbon emissions.

she was not vegan, she was plant-based
Yep! She didn't say a thing about responsibility for not killing animals. You guess she doesn't care about that.
Her logic for giving up being a vegan is ridiculous and shows a real lack of intelligence.
Oh, wow, you were quick to that opinion, weren'tcha?
You don't know her logic for giving up being vegan. She didn't say why exactly. Also, you don't know that she may still be eating consciously and just not completely vegan. There are options as people are different.
Fantastic Fungi is an amazing show .. and the fungi and trees hold so many secrets .. not geeky .. and love that Stephen’s like oh I’ll send you a link to this cool shroom thing !! Great interview ❤
OMWord... I soooo love HACKS ! I just binged watched Season 3 and am so ready for Season 4. I love the relationship Ava (Hannah Einbinder) has with Deborah (Jean Smart) and all the peripheral stories going on at the same time. I've enjoyed Jean for most of her acting career and have always found her work amazing. HACKS IS great comedy with a terrific storyline. Some of the best comedy I've seen I've seen in a few years.
Vegan for the animals, nothing else. Plant based for the environment, health, human rights/welfare, etc.
She may have thought she was vegan but she gave herself away when she said she quit because the envrionment was the corporations' responsibility. That's a massive cop out, anyway. We can all do our bit. Kinda like saying "I'm not going to promote an anti-rape culture because it's the government's responsibility to protect women. Just lame.
Thank you! She just refuses to take responsibility for her own actions.
Lol
Exactly.
@@AetherIdol Do animals care what reason you go vegan for?
@@BondBaconThey do if you go back because corporations. The percentage of people reverting is higher in those who went vegan for health or environmental reasons as compared to ethical reasons.
People cheering for eating animals/essentially the exploitation of animals is wild. Also, you can say we should hold corporations/100 companies accountable for 71% of global emissions, but if you're taking the individual impact out of this equation, you're not really helping the problem. Consumers have a lot of impact on the choices of companies. The more meat you consume/buy, the more demand there will be. So that logic is completely flawed 🤔
Exactly, and over their lifetime, a single person can kill thousands upon thousands of animals. This adds up to massive long-term profits to the meat/dairy industry.
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The whole scene where she says how bad the industry is and then “pass the goose”. So I guess it was based on real events… Ugh, humans.
Relax
😂
Hannah is wrong in that corporations aren't solely responsible. Stephen she is AS WELL and she gave your viewers an excuse of blaming others for doing the wrong thing. Environmental harm and animal cruelly in the form of meat and diary and egg is the purchasers' responsibility too. Ed Winters needs to be on your show!
Man, I have a problem. My dog keeps eating my shoes. I wish he changed this behavior so every time I catch him eating shoes I give him a treat and call him a "good boy". AND YET HE KEEPS DOING IT?! I'm flabbergasted. I even started giving him old shoes to play with and he goes for all shoes in the house! I don't understand what's going on! Why does he keep repeating the behavior I'm rewarding?! Like it's not my fault he's doing it. It's up to him to change, right?!

People cheering for animal slaughtering is crazy. Being a vegan is very easy, dealing with haters is the hardest part. Also, consumers are very important, hold yourself accountable for everything you do. Don't blame it on government, your parents, religion, or anything you can think, it's on you

Hannah Einbinder: "It's super important to go vegan"
Hannah Einbinder: "I no longer am vegan"
So she thought it was important to be vegan for health, environmental, and/or ethical reasons, and now she is happy to delegate those decisions to major corporations. When did Hannah stop believing in personal responsibility?
If Hannah thinks "it's super important to go vegan" and that "the pressure needs to be put on corporations who do a lot of the damage to our environment," if everyone abdicates responsibility and doesn't acknowledge the environmental damage they do by consuming meat and dairy, where does she think the pressure comes from?
It makes me so depressed when a whole audience starts cheering after hearing someone announce they're back at funding senseless animal aßuse.
Exactly
Any girl that goes drinking with her dad is beyond cool. And what's not to love about a 30,000 year old mycelial growth covering hundreds of acres? So what if it may be a space alien trying to consume the planet?
Both Hannah & Stephen might as well just admit: We support animal cruelty & exploitation!
So disappointed in both of them! 🤮
I have never heard of Hannah Einbinder before but I am now a fan. 😍
She’s the daughter of Laraine Newman!
🤷♂Well, sure. You keep reading and reading and reading about how _bad_ things are and how they keep getting worse, you're gonna deal with _depression._ How about, on the other hand, you start doing research into what the environmentally conscious of us can do to _help_ things, though?
Consider an unlikely source. In 2005, a book called _The Undercover Economist_ was published. In it, the author, a man named Tim Harford, related _extensive_ information, including an anecdote in which he and his wife went to a symposium, and on their way inside, someone with a clipboard asked them how they traveled there.
Tim asked why the man wanted to know.
He explained that they were planning to offset the carbon footprint of all those at the symposium by planting the appropriate number of trees.
So Tim said that they had traveled there by anthracite-powered steamer and then his wife elbowed him in the ribs. They had, in fact, gone to the symposium on their bikes.
Bicycles are a very environmentally _friendly_ way to travel, while anthracite is about the most environmentally _unfriendly_ fuel source that humanity has ever _discovered._ So why had Tim said that they had traveled there by anthracite-powered steamer?
Because being carbon-neutral _would_ be worthwhile if you could get _everyone_ on board with it. Until we manage that, the environmentally conscious are better advised to focus on being carbon _optimal._ Don't be content just to remove from the atmosphere an amount of carbon _equal_ to what you put into circulation. Strive to remove all the carbon from the atmosphere that you _can._
Good Philly accent!
Fantastic Fungi is an excellent documentary.
Seek it out!
Couldn't agree more Hannah, "tragedy of the commons" is a failure mode (system archetype) that has been well studied: solutions for this type of failure cannot be solved at the individual level.

She is perfect and good for her for calling out the corporations
Where’s the incentive for corporations to change if people continue to support them as they are now?
@@brandonmccall7803 these days our economy is so globalized and monopolized we dont have much of a choice of whether or not we "support" the the large corporations that are polluting the planet. its nearly impossible to do anything without the big polluters being involved, let alone organize a meaningful boycott... If we want to save our planet we need corporate regulations to force them to change.
@@clarabirch123 she said she went vegan. Veganism is a moral philosophy against the commodification of animals. It’s not an environmental movement. Animal agriculture causes a lot of harm to the environment, and we can boycott the exploitation of animals and lower our carbon footprint by eating a plant based diet.
@@brandonmccall7803She mentioned the environment so I think that's why she went vegan. Going vegan is a good thing that individuals can choose to do, but if we're talking just about environmental impacts, imposing regulations to stop corporate pollution would have a much bigger impact than any one person changing their diet. I'm not trying to invalidate the impact of going vegan; this is just the argument Hannah provided, that corporate reponsibility has a bigger impact overall than individual choices, and some people choose to focus their energy on the former instead of the latter.
@@clarabirch123 she didn’t mention the environment, Colbert did. She said she went vegan after watching What the Health which is a documentary that focuses mainly on the health benefits of a plant based diet. No doubt corporations need to be held responsible for the harm they cause to the environment. But without our boycotting corporations that kill animals corporations are going to continue to destroy the environment. I believe it’s something like 80% of land resources are being used for animal agriculture. Many crops are grown to feed the 70 billion animals raised for livestock. That is also where a large amount of fresh water is going to, rainfall that livestock. Plus climate change is being effected by all of the methane in the air. But if we go back to what veganism is it’s not environmental or for health. Veganism is anti animal exploitation because we recognize animals as sentient beings that have the ability to experience pain and suffering. We believe animals are here with us, not for us.
I love Hannah Einbinder.

Maybe the West Virginians supposedly so in love with coal should learn that it's a dying industry and move on to something with a future.

she’s a darling
Hannah's right, of course. Personal responsibility is a drop compared to what corporations create in environmental destruction. What we need are politicians who are courageous enough to stand up to corporate lobbyists and who have the integrity to refuse kick backs from corporations. That would bring about the change future generations need to live on this planet.
And how do you get what you propose without individual action? How do you expect others to do something if you can’t even do your own part? These corporations are powerful because of the demand for their products. Obviously individual action will not solve all the problems, but you can’t have systemic action without individual action.
@@vishalfenn6827 I thought I made myself clear when I said our personal habits are a mere drop in the bucket. I did not say we should do away with personal responsibility and leave it to politicians. Yes, more people should be ditching their cars for mass transit, assuming it exists in their area. Sure, shopping big box stores is adding to the problem, but when that's all that's available in your town, you have no real choice. We are, for the most part, at the mercy of our legislators being conscientious, thinking about future generations, but if they're kowtowing to lobbyists, and many of them are, our meager acts of recycling or what have you, are not going to make major impacts on our climate improvements. Big changes require big solutions, and that's beyond an individual lifestyle.
Say that to the thousands of animals that get slaughtered to feed one human over their lifetime. "Oh you're just a drop in the bucket, so no point in changing."

To be clear, there is no such thing as ‘former vegan’. Anyone who abandons a plant based diet was never vegan in the first place.
LOL what utter nonsense.
@@Tao_Tology Veganism is only about avoiding harming and exploiting animals so even if you have troubles, you still stick to that as much as possible. If you can't eat vegan for whatever reason, you can stil refuse to wear leather, for example. Hannah was talking about the environmental benefits of veganism (which are many, by the way) not the animals so it seems like she was plant based for the environment not vegan for the animals therefore not vegan in the first place.
Another problem with her capitulation is that she's dodging personal responsibility. Interesting; I share the same views on fungi and meat consumption with her.
So you stand in favour of animal exploitation and cruelty, even after claiming to want to protect the animals by not supporting that industry?
@@NewAge374 This actually deserves a very long discussion. To make it short, I'm definitely against animal exploitation and cruelty. However, from what I see, and I think that's her point, is that the main problem isn't eating meat, but the big, greedy corporations taking advantage of the voiceless. A perfect example is avocado. It's a healthy plant food, some call it a superfood, and is heavily favored by vegans. Guess what? In the majority of cases, eating this fruit is actually violating human rights; because it's such a lucrative business, now it's linked to organized crimes and human suffering. So no matter what we choose to consume (not only food, actually), when there are huge profits involved, big companies or organized criminal groups will swoop in and abuse others. We should target this cause this is the core of the problem; going vegan isn't solving the problem.
But I still applaud people who go vegans. It's a personal choice and I admire that.
@@chumark54 I suggest you look into the labour violations in slaughterhouses, how across the world immigrants and people with limited education are exploited in this industry. Health insurance is not covered, the pressure is extremely high and causes accidents with physical trauma as a result, and there's a tendency of employees becoming depressed and suicidal.
Is there any form of ethical consumption possible under capitalism? Sounds like an excuse to me, when you know there are things you can do to reduce suffering.
Let me give you the roll-out for an avocado: water is stolen from local aquifers to irrigate; a family of farmers is highly pressured to produce quantity over quality; soil is degraded by use of intense practice and/or pesticides; people transporting the product on inhumane schedules to get to a supermarket.
Now one for meat (cattle for example):
pieces of forest are burned down; mother cows are impregnated by force; babies are taken away at birth and live in prison-like environments; feed is produced in mass agriculture that extensively uses pesticides; babies grow at insane rates to reach optimal size and live a fraction of their potential lifespan; they are caged up for transport, easily for days without food, water or being able to lay down; at the slaughterhouse they sense death in the air; they are gassed by carbon monoxide poisoning or their throat is slit, sometimes the animals haven't died before they start being gutted; the workers perform at an impossible tempo and are required to dissociate from the pain they witness and cause; small farmers get a sliver of profit while mega corporations use up all the government subsidies; consumers over time develop health issues directly related to meat consumption...
Do I have to continue? The difference in product matters SO much that there is unequivocally a moral choice to make here.
