The fridge also opens from the top due to the fact that heat rises and the cool air will stay in the fridge when you open in. It's another way they are them super efficient.

Coming from a 4wd touring background in Australia I would aregue the solar panel should be mounted on an adjustable plate so it can be angled towards the sun and also in a quick release plate with an attachable extensionlead to position in the sun when at camp as most people will park in the shade
And that’s a tiny solar controller which if the pannnal in 200watts or more you will not get nearly as much power amperage output

Thank you for the video, I really enjoyed it. Just a note on the fridge. The style portable fridge you are using was invented by an Australian company, Malleys of Sydney and called an "Esky". Coincidentally, the one you are using "ARB" is also an Australian company . The overriding reason for the lid being in the top rather than the front of the unit, is not to stop things falling out, although this is an advantage. It's to prevent the cold air falling out of the fridge, which is what happens in a conventional front door style, which is less efficient...PS: I love the van and build...

have you guys considered installing external 120v to the van? You should be able to either tie into the electrical system (run the fan/fridge/laptop when docked somewhere) or just run an input line going to a 4 plug box for if alex is in a campsite or at another location with power to give some additional power options (essentially an extension cord but clean/stock looking) it would remove the load off the battery/solar setup and make the van more robust during a prolonged stay somewhere.

Also if you decide to have a washer Jet on the panel it’s best to have a stand-alone switch in the instance of ice .

For the battery/power system...you may wish to install a power converter that can be used to charge the system by "shore" power.
I picked up an adjustable output 6-15VDC @60A converter for about $50 and adjusted it to 14.6VDC output to match the charge controller input.
It works great for keeping my batteries charged when I am able to plug in to an external source. :)

The fridge also opens like that to mitigate the loss of cold air. The same concept is found in Alex's solar charger, hot air rises and cold air falls. Opening the fridge from the top allows a lot of that cold air to stay in the bottom as opposed to a residential fridge where the cold air tends to "fall out".

Benjamin Harvey something to the effect of "I'm glad you are a fan but for the sake of my family please respect our privacy and don't drop by knocking on the door."

that fridge is DOPE . I might have put the solar panel on a sliding track ,over the fan . So during rain the panel covers the fan hole to either block super heat or the dreaded Rain that *Will* eventually get in . 💦

Very cool project Alex and Seth. A Portaledge would make a good bed and give plenty of room to keep bikes inside the van at night. Just an idea 💡
