- After a month with our Tacoma & Alu-Cab Canopy Camper, we FINALLY got an opportunity to take it on a proper shakedown trip, spending a night dispersed camping in central Oregon on our way to Overland Expo PNW in Bend, Oregon.
This trail had us wondering .... did we make the right call, or was this a HUGE mistake?

Perfect! Love the new setup.
@@GATORADDAM we built it up so much in our heads before getting it (Alu-Cab) that I wondered if expectations wouldn't meet reality. So far though, they have!
Man that camping spot.......Wow!
It's crazy to think that there are spots around the U.S that still drop below 20's even in the summer.
Yeah, that spot was 👌.
The wonton tacos look delicious!
They were amazing (and really easy to make at camp)!
Hey Guys,
Any chance I could get your recipe for the smashed Wonton Taco?? Wife wants to try that out. Thanks! Love the channel
Here ya go: nomnompaleo.com/dumpling-smash-tacos P.S - Christine is obsessed with Nom-Nom Paleo. I think 80% of her recipes come from there these days haha.
Enjoy!
What an amazing spot. That's always the best, when you got that anxiety going down the trail and then you get a payoff like that. 🤌 Those smash burger wontons looked bomb! That hideaway table is really cool. Love your guys setup.
@@VictorVlogsPDX for real! I love (and sometimes hate) those trails where you don't know what's in store .... but more often than not, they lead to somewhere amazing.
And yeah, those wonton smashed tacos were excellent
What phone mount do you use?
@nickglickman8638 the phone mount itself is a RAM mount. But the RAM mount is mounted to the vent on a vent ring mount. Not sure what the brand of that one is though
@@WheretoNextOverland ok thank you!
I think its the hondo air vent clip from tacoma lifestyle
Ahh, yep, that's the one! New to the Taco platform, so haven't figured out all the aftermarket support companies yet haha
Sorry we missed getting to meet you guys at expo but we could only stay for Friday. Of course there are drawbacks to everything but for us getting off of the ground (RTT) was a huge step for the better. You guys have a great set up.
Bummed we missed you. Hopefully we'll see you there next year
What are the sleeping area/mattress dimensions?
Can't recall the dimensions off the top of my head, but I can tell you that the Dually Long mattress from Hest fits PERFECTLY on the main sleeping platform. So, if you pull those dimensions you'll be close.
With the extra platform lowered, there's probably another 2 feet of vertical sleep space.
That setup! 👌🏻 Glad you got the initial pinstripes out of the way so you don't have to worry about that anymore lol 🤷🏻♂️ Might be stressing about our setup time now 😅
@WheresWiseman haha 100%. Getting those pinstripes out of the way was the best thing that happened on that trail!
As for setup time .... I'm banking on your awning (hopefully?) being a royal pain to setup lol
Gotta love the new pinstripe mods lol. Lovely campsite! hope all is well ❤
It was (weirdly) a bit of relief getting those first pinstripes out of the way haha
We just got off vacation and rented a frontier and in comparison to a taco, much more comfortable in regards to seating.
Nice set up, when does the walk thru video happen?
Yeah, the Taco definitely has a weird seating position. I must just be lucky in that it doesn't bother me all that much.
And I definitely owe everyone a walk-around video of the new Taco + camper. Just been too busy out camping to get one done yet!
So how was the 3000 miles as far as comfort? I have a bad back so I’m leaning more towards the 4Runner to set for overlanding and longer drives
I was honestly pleasantly surprised by the comfort. Not as good as the LX, that's for sure, but considering how badly people trash on the 3rd Gen Tacoma seating position, I didn't find it to be uncomfortable .... and I was driving 14+ hours per day.
Love the new setup., it's perfect. 👍
@godsbackcountryoverland thanks! So far it has been EXACTLY what we had hoped it would be. This really is our dream camping setup!
Dickinson FTW!!
It's so, so good! Used it again on a cold night in the mountains last night
How much for the LX? :D
@@brentmassingale2161 we can't bring ourselves to part with it, so we're gonna relocate her to Arizona for winter / desert trips
Nice, I so want an Alucab for my Tacoma!
I also have to say that I found one of your camp spots and I see why you went there though the week, we went all the way to the end in May and it was packed on a weekend.
The Alu-Cab is amazing! It makes everything so much easier (and more comfortable).
And yeah, there are definitely some camp spots we will ONLY go to mid-week ... often the ones that are easy to get to also get paaaaacked!
@WheretoNextOverland I bet, I just need to convince my wife, I want to go to Mule one of these days and let her see one! I'm done with tents and trailers. She is SO scared of wildlife, that she wants to be in a trailer.
