  • This was the first time for Brandon & Fred to dig deep into a Mini Cooper motor. This customers Mini came in making all kinds a racket and at first Brandon wasn't convinced that the noise was actually coming from the timing chain. All Data said that this job should take 9.5 hours, most of that time was taken by putting the car in "service Position". Find out what that entails and if the problem was actually the timing or something else.

    All auto manufacturers should allow their engineers to design a car, then build one (1) and force the engineers to do the standard periodic maintenance themselves. After that I think we will all see much better and simpler designed cars to work on.

    The new mini cooper is a BMW designed and made car. Yes metric is so much easier to understand than SAE, and most new cars are metric even the domestic.

    If the crank and cam shafts are locked into the exact right position with those pins and the position of the sprockets don't matter at all as long as they are fastened back on then that's an awesome design. No sprocket "hope to get them into the correct position" crap! Also, if they designed those pins to be in the way while putting things back together so it is impossible to forget them in there then that's a bonus.

    Metric is almost always better but I'm in reno and there is no nice simple metric for 8' ceilings or proximity, or it's fractions (like 2 or 4').

    Nice job boys, you did it.
    I understand it can be frustrating but it could have been worse..... some German cars need the engine and/or transmission out of the car for that kind of job.
    But usually with what I own, you don't need to drain anything for the service position....

    Most are made in the UK (in Oxford), but also made in other places (my sister had a Cooper S which was made in the Netherlands). BMW bought Rover group, and between them developed the original "new" Mini, and when BMW sold Rover again they kept the Mini and the Oxford plant. So new ones are BMWs

    The Germans had to work with the French to design this French/German engine. The waterpump-drive uses some kind of variable friction wheel, isn't constantly driven. When this waterpump drive fails it sounds just like "your" Peugeot, Citroen, BMW engine :)

    Service mode doesn’t require
    a/c evaluation or coolant drain.
    Front end just pulls forward about 5 inches. Can be pulled outa little farther with supports.

    I have a 2012 countryman s all4 I replaced the timing chain as well as the valve stem seals.. this took a week to finish, it’s a tough job if you’re by yourself but it’s possible! It took me a bit because I dropped a keeper inside the engine and i ended up removing the oil pan and the head to double check. Found it in the oil pan unable to fish out with a magnet

    All mini Cooper engines are made by BMW the actually had a recall on the timing chain tensioner years ago because the engines where blowing up I worked on tons of these and the tensioners are very very specific to each year of mini.the tensioner is on the backside of the engine on the outside. (At least the ones I worked on did) 1 or 2 bolts and it comes right out

    Tax times are set incorrectly! Chain pretension is done with a special tool. The timing is also tightened using the slide rail at the top. You forgot the slide rail. The video is completely pointless and wrong

  • @chrismurphy7199
    @chrismurphy7199 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Just to save you 4 hours of labor next time, you can just use a wiggle bit and a long extension to take that out. No need to disassemble everything and replace the chain etc unless this is meant to be a funny gag video... That tensioner is so common that it may as well be a maintenance item.
