Mario 64 feels like trying to do parkour in one of those dreams where you have to run and do dangerous things but your legs feel like noodles. Jumps are floaty, you stumble around heavily, momentum is hard to gain and hard to lose, it's hard to keep your balance, you're constantly in danger of falling down from something, something happens and you think you're going to fall to your death but oh, oh, somehow you just survived that and are still going. Also you can sort of fly sometimes but it's hard to control and you're constantly fighting to keep going upwards instead of down.

In the past when i was from age 12 to 16 i occasionally had nightmares and dreams like that i then readed about how to stop them by waking yourself up by saying at random intervalls in the day is this a dream and trying to wake up. Apperantly you will then subconsciciously do it in the dream as well. The first time i woke up was good i was happy. But i took it a step further. At some point in my dreams instead of waking up my mind went so from wait i know this is a dream. Let's try to control it and unbelievebaly the dream changed to my imagination. So if i was facing a horrifying parkour i changed it to a water pretpark. You should try to either learn to lucid dream or learn to wake yourself up from nightmares.
This is probably the most ignorant thing I've ever read about Mario 64. "Momentum is hard to gain" there's something called the b button that helps with that. And when you fly you are fighting to go upwards because it's based on how much downward momentum you put into it.
Are we sure that Arin's controller wasn't broken because the more times I come back to revisit this series the more I struggle to believe that anyone could be this bad at Super Mario 64.
Funny thing: I played wrath of Cortex and Crash 1 and I hated them but then I played crash 2, 3, and 4 and those games made me like crash. Younger me would’ve agreed with Arin but mature me says otherwise

I'll be honest. I feel like everyone can relate to Arin's experience with this game. Whilst it can be fun and challenging. It can be also be unfair and rage-inducing, and sometimes the camera and controls can make you miss a star when you think you've lined yourself up perfectly.

Episode 6: You Know the cool thing about this is that this is the first time in forever that I'm really getting to sit down and play this, and I'm basically getting to experience all of it again 15 ep's later: FUCK THIS GAME
I've experienced something similar every time another semester of college starts. I start out all excited and ambitious and ready for whatever comes my way---I have all my shit together. As time goes on, there are some challenges, but then I reason that they are brief obstacles, and I'm still convinced I have my shit together. About midway through the semester, I start questioning why the hell I went back and I stress about EVERYTHING. I start to question my own existence around this point. The experience reaches its climax as every assignment, project, exam, and other miscellaneous worries begin to pile up---this is the frenzy in which I have realize I don't have my shit together. Towards the end of the semester, I'll reach this state of zen immediately after the frenzy, but it's not really peace so much as I have stressed myself past the point of feeling anything. The people around me are visibly stressed and I've actually been asked how I could be so calm, and it's honestly because everything else is just gone. And wouldn't you know it, after a Winter or Summer break, I do the entire thing aaaaaall over again. TL;DR: I feel ya, Arin.

not only do i find the shitty look endearing, but as danny pointed out, the way it makes the geometry of the levels easy to infer is really nice. combined with their open-ended nature and me actually very much preferring mario's movement here to every game after (barring maybe 3DL), makes this generally the most satisfying 3D mario to play imo

Did Arin actually figure out, that at the clock it depends on the time it's showing when you go in? I don't know exactly how the times were, I think it was 3:00 slow movement, 9:00 fast movement, 6:00 random movement and 12:00 no movement at all.

I honestly want to know how exactly Arin functions. Like... between this, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask, I really have no idea how this man's brain even functions. Like, I can't fathom how he's able to struggle on a game that literally no one would ever struggle on... at least, nowhere near as bad as he does... but is able to complete Dark Souls and Bloodborne, claiming those to be great games while these other games that aren't really that hard and are legendary examples of great game design that pioneered the future of gaming are claimed to be shitty, poorly designed messes. I really cannot figure out what the hell is wrong with him and wish I could.
I get where you're coming from, and I feel that way a lot too. But in his defense... in the first place, having ADHD myself, playing video games and talking at the same time when you have ADHD can be very difficult. You get on a tangent about some crap and then all memory of what you're supposed to be doing in the game vanishes. I'm amazed he can stay on task at any point in the game, even if it's not that often. Him being bad at some games could be a symptom of the show's format. As for games like Ocarina, Majora, and M64, I can see where he's coming from with those games too. He tends to be a mostly-action little-if-any-plot guy - Ocarina is very story-oriented and linear, and it probably feels agonizing for him to have to take things in slow, set-up steps because he has to talk to someone for ten minutes before he can progress. Majora seems to be much the same way, but worse for Arin, because iirc it asks you to pay attention to exactly what several characters are doing at exactly what time during the day, and that's probably not an easy thing to keep in mind (for Arin). M64 is much less story-focused, being the first Mario game of its kind, but his grievances with that are the way Mario controls and his own ineptitude. Sure, Ocarina and M64 were very pioneering for their time, but there have been a lot of improvements since then, and maybe they don't hold up *as well* (I say this as someone who has never played either game so take that with a grain of salt). Bloodborne and DS (iirc) are also more action focused than story focused. There's definitely a story there, but it's overshadowed by the main goal of getting stronger and smarter through well-designed combat. They seem to be games that leave everything up to the player without burdening anyone with a complex story, unless they want to pay attention to minute details and easter eggs. TL;DR Arin's problems with video games mainly come from (1) an inability to talk and game/pay attention simultaneously and (2) his own subjective gameplay preferences, sometimes backed up by what makes a good game, sometimes just opinion. (Sorry, this was probably a lot longer than I meant it to get lol. Feel free to disagree w these points but I probably won't come back on to debate.)
After gathering his game plays I realize that all that he is doing is for the sake of comedy. Notice he's so bad at these games but blood borne and dark souls. No problem. It seems like he makes rage bate videos on things he thinks will be funny. Like this is the guy who screams poop jokes, and like some of his game plays are all like, I've played this, and it's gonna be easy...oooooops I died, que rage. It's scripted to hell.
How much Arin sucks at this game is why it's so fucking good. There is so much depth to this game in terms of movement. Easily one of the best speedrunning games of all time, insanely addictive once you know your route and you feel yourself get more and more used to it.
Yeah, I agree. Everyone sucks at the game when they first play, but each time you play through you get better at it, and it never becomes easy, just easier than your first time.
Ya know, everytime arin complains I'm reminded that as a child of 9 I, and probably most people, played this game sans walk through or internet and managed to figure out how to get 120 stars and how the controls worked.

In Arins defense; anyone who has played Mario 64 and has completed 120 stars. Every person I have asked about this game always tell me that they have something that they really hate about this. Basically to put it short, every single person has a love-hate relationship with this game. There's plenty of things to like about it but there's also very many things that you would hate about it. I understand Arin's view point through this playthrough.
As someone who grew up playing the reboot of this game on the DS, the controls were still absolutely donkey testicles. The real final boss of that game is the camera/controls.
I forget which series it was where they were talking about getting so angry that you just suddenly go super quiet (maybe it was Mario Sunshine?) but Arin was at that point more than once in this playthrough

Sure, Ocarina and M64 were very pioneering for their time, but there have been a lot of improvements since then, and maybe they don't hold up *as well* (I say this as someone who has never played either game so take that with a grain of salt).
Bloodborne and DS (iirc) are also more action focused than story focused. There's definitely a story there, but it's overshadowed by the main goal of getting stronger and smarter through well-designed combat. They seem to be games that leave everything up to the player without burdening anyone with a complex story, unless they want to pay attention to minute details and easter eggs.
TL;DR Arin's problems with video games mainly come from (1) an inability to talk and game/pay attention simultaneously and (2) his own subjective gameplay preferences, sometimes backed up by what makes a good game, sometimes just opinion. (Sorry, this was probably a lot longer than I meant it to get lol. Feel free to disagree w these points but I probably won't come back on to debate.)
After gathering his game plays I realize that all that he is doing is for the sake of comedy. Notice he's so bad at these games but blood borne and dark souls. No problem. It seems like he makes rage bate videos on things he thinks will be funny. Like this is the guy who screams poop jokes, and like some of his game plays are all like, I've played this, and it's gonna be easy...oooooops I died, que rage. It's scripted to hell.

How much Arin sucks at this game is why it's so fucking good. There is so much depth to this game in terms of movement. Easily one of the best speedrunning games of all time, insanely addictive once you know your route and you feel yourself get more and more used to it.
Yeah, I agree. Everyone sucks at the game when they first play, but each time you play through you get better at it, and it never becomes easy, just easier than your first time.

In Arins defense; anyone who has played Mario 64 and has completed 120 stars. Every person I have asked about this game always tell me that they have something that they really hate about this. Basically to put it short, every single person has a love-hate relationship with this game. There's plenty of things to like about it but there's also very many things that you would hate about it. I understand Arin's view point through this playthrough.
As someone who grew up playing the reboot of this game on the DS, the controls were still absolutely donkey testicles. The real final boss of that game is the camera/controls.
I forget which series it was where they were talking about getting so angry that you just suddenly go super quiet (maybe it was Mario Sunshine?) but Arin was at that point more than once in this playthrough
