Any updates regarding the giveaway mate? I'm looking forward to it since I'm a college student and I don't have money to get a laptop...I legit enter online meetings on my phone. This giveaway might save me :)
I got one of these in the beginning of December, I put a spare 500GB SSD in it and it works great. The extra ports and SD reader are also very useful. Good stuff cheap!
Just picked up one for my new Mac Mini M1. Great external storage solution for lower spec mini's or just a clean storage solution. This will be my first Mac Desktop since the eMac if anyone remembers that behemoth. I do a ton of photo and video editing. looking forward to seeing what adobe does for optimization with M1. - Cheers
I've been searching for something like this to use with the mini. I didn't want to invest in the mini until I found external solutions that met my need. This addresses my external needs regarding the mini. Thanks for sharing
People complained that Apple didn’t redesign the mini. I’m glad they didn’t since it allows us to use cheaper, older yet still cool accessories like this.
OMG! This is just what I need if I end up getting a Mac Mini! Thank you! UPDATE: On my end, it says it won’t be in stock until February, but Satechi has a similar one in stock.
Less is more. The less gear you have, the less distractions you have and the more creative you become as you can laser focus on getting the most out of the little that you have.
I went out and got 8tb storage for this thing and it was not working. I could not find out how to get it working. Thank god I found your channel. it works now. Thanks legend. Subscribed. :)
It is super useful for anyone besides Mac Mini owners. I wonder if the disk is having bottlenecks over USB 3.1 (5Gbps of bandwidth). I'll keep checking for a future video in which you could test for bottlenecks using a thunderbolt (40gbps) enclosure and a USB 3.1 (5Gbps) enclosure with a very fast SSD drive (Samsung 970 Plus) using the M1. I'm not gonna spend almost $1k for upgrading the hard drive with Apple. For those of us who produce music, there are lots of plugins that use quite a lot of RAM, but they also offer the option to use less at the expense of having quicker loads from a fast SSD drive. Since RAM upgrades are not an option, an external nvme SSD would be the perfect choice for Hard Drive expansion.
This USB-C Hub really a great expansion for the Mac mini, the extra SSD storage slot are really thoughtful, the only downside for me is the new M1 Mac mini only comes with silver colour.
I got a M.2 NVMe SSD with TB3/USB4 enclosure to expand my Mac Mini's internal storage. 250-300 mb/s write-read speeds are 5 to 10 times less than Apple-built SSD.
Nice low cost option. I like the easy access to the SSD bay and it does look great stacked with your mini. I’d prefer at least one additional type C port though.
I understand this point of this being a low-cost dock option. This kind of design is just screaming to be a Thunderbolt dock, with a NVMe M.2 option instead of that SATA SSD interface.
I would recommend NVME if you need a faster drive. With a Samsung T7 USB-C on my mac I am getting nearer to 900mb/s read and write. Cheaper than Thunderbolt enclose and drive.
Unrelated to the dock, just wanna ask if you're having problems with your bluetooth keyboard and mice. I'm planning to get one, I'm just hesitant because of m1 Mac minis bluetooth issues
my only reservation is that the Mac mini's only USB-c is now taken up for connecting to the hub. If the hub had an extra USB-c that would've mitigated that, but as things stand the only USB-c connectors are used up to connect the two devices. Currently, using the M1 mac mini's USB-c to connect to my monitor, so, I'd have to use another cable. I actually had issues with HDMI not working which the USB-c resolved. Either way, a single USB-c is a slight dampener
The main issue with this kind of design (gets all of its power from the Mac Mini instead of an external power supply) is that it over-subscribes the USB-C port on the Mac Mini. Per the Thunderbolt guidelines, you officially can only get up to 5V @ 3A out of the port (15W). The SSD itself can easily consume between 2-4W during read/write operations, and the two pairs of USB3/USB2 ports can (conservatively) draw another 2.8A amps (14W). It would be better if they made that expansion dock self-powered, especially for the price.
Bought this dock a few days ago. waiting for it. I already have a spare SATA 1TB SDD. Only downside the dock is USB 3.0, not 3.1Gen 2. Not a big issue not for the price it good.
Has it remained stable? The problem I typically have with docks is that they just crap out from time to time... usually only at the most inopportune moments. If it is stable, this is a great deal, indeed!
On top I think it looks better, no space and the speaker is made to go on a hard surface, not a plastic enclosure. I guess you block the apple logo but eh. If you have the M1 mac mini heat shouldn't be an issue.
So, for the cooling fans, I'd personally like to see comparing Macbook pro vs macbook air + cooling fans on a long Cpu intensive application. I'd like to know if the performance is comparable when u add the bottom cooling fan for 30$. I'd like a silent machine for music recording real time but also want the performance to be as close to the Macbook pro as possible without paying 300$ for it.
I use windows pc at home and two macbook pros on the go. But this lit accessory makes me want to replace my pc with a mac mini for good and go all mac.
I have 2 hubs (without drive enclosures) and you know what bugs me the most? There's no USB-C passthrough so you can daisy chain them together. This one here has the same deficiency IMO...
Have to say I really like the look of the dock....if you have a Mac Mini this is a must have accessory for sure. I think I'd color match though, but otherwise, really digging it.
It is a good idea but alas, it is somewhat a generation behind. They need to go up one level on the ports. Newer hubs are 3.1 gen 2. This dock would be amazing if they did that upgrade so that the SSD would read and write faster, the ports would be 3.1 and 3.0 (no need for USB 2.0 as a 3.0 port can handle 2.0 if needed) and the SD and micro card would read faster with that upgrade. If/when they do upgrade, I'll be right there to get mine.
Very nice. If you have plenty of Disc storage in your mini then it would be a great location for a Time Machine drive. I just added a Samsung 1 TB Time Machine and it works really well. This dock would keep it all nice and tidy.
silver available now - troubled by reports of disk disappearing when machine goes to sleep - you have to reactivate usb-c/computer connection by plugging in or plugging out and back in one of the devices/ports e.g. a usb key
Is there a way we can backup and take our iphones and ipads datas through iTunes using an external SSD? if not, i think a 256GB or even 512GB storage mini will never be enough......
This thing is super clean. Hopefully by the time there are chip generation bumps they will have this same product with USB4 and some more drive flexibility. I love it!
The write/read is pretty shoddy tbh. I've just attached 2 x 2tb SSD to the back, 1 usb-A and 1 to the thunderbolt with a sata to usb-c - both drives get pretty much 360/360 read and write. Sure, it looks ugly, but my mini is out of sight on top of my under desk drawers. It could just be the SSD you attached, but I doubt it - seems more like the unit itself is not capable of delivering decent speeds? Here is the hub on Amazon: geni.us/macminihub
I agree it is amazing, definitely going to pick one up once I get a Mac mini

Is it compatible with new Mac mini with M1? I didn’t understand the version you tried in the video
@@vatinnifora Yes I am using the M1 Mini in this video

True that

That hub is amazing. I can already imagine how great a 2tb 2.5inch hdd would be in that.
I think the maximum size it’ll take is 1TB unfortunately
@@NatesFilmTutorials For an external dock? i've never ever heard of a dock being limited on the mac storage.
@@NatesFilmTutorials why? It’s a dock limitation? Sure it’s not a macOS limitation.
@@NatesFilmTutorials takes a 2TB just fine

This channel is way too underrated
Ironically I had just bought this very same dock yesterday BEFORE watching your video. Gives me a lot of confidence.
That's not ironic...

Yeah, its not like they are going to stare at the mac mini enclosure all day long to warrant a redesign...
They actually need to entirely redesign the macbooks and imacs
Do they make one with two drives inside (looks like it has room)?
If they don't have room for two side-by-side perhaps one of them could be for a MVME drive?
I would go for one that holds 1 or 2 - 3.5 inch drives for mass storage needs.
@@DaveDugdaleColorado miss your videos. You taught me so much when I had my DSLR. Hope all is well.

I think the Satechi has not the SSD-Slot, it is only a Card reader and USB hub.
And it is now $70 US. They must have seen us coming.
Check for It on ebay
Seemless! Why are you so creative and minimal at the same time? Good Job bro
Less is more. The less gear you have, the less distractions you have and the more creative you become as you can laser focus on getting the most out of the little that you have.
Mac mini has the greatest potential out of the three in my opinion
I went out and got 8tb storage for this thing and it was not working. I could not find out how to get it working. Thank god I found your channel. it works now. Thanks legend. Subscribed. :)
Is the dock heating up much, though? Is it heating up the Mac?

Great video! Can you confirm if drive disconnects when the Mac Mini goes to sleep?
even tho am all the way into the macbook air. the mac mini just looks so fancy and futuristic i love.
I got a M.2 NVMe SSD with TB3/USB4 enclosure to expand my Mac Mini's internal storage. 250-300 mb/s write-read speeds are 5 to 10 times less than Apple-built SSD.
I got this one and have a 1.5T ssd installed inside! Speed is dope! Very convinient. It cost me 230 rmb on JD, which is a online store in China.
Have you had any ejection errors when your mini sleeps?
It seems so inconvenient to lack ports on a desktop yet there is something weirdly satisfying about these docks. Review more if you can and want
Nice low cost option. I like the easy access to the SSD bay and it does look great stacked with your mini. I’d prefer at least one additional type C port though.
mac mini has really good performence
Very helpful! The whole Erase and AFPS info was just what I needed. Thanks!
Love the color difference! It honestly looks very minimal and equally useful for high productivity! Great video!
Have you tested to see if it is siphoning off any of your data and sending it somewhere!?!
I understand this point of this being a low-cost dock option. This kind of design is just screaming to be a Thunderbolt dock, with a NVMe M.2 option instead of that SATA SSD interface.
Waiting to buy something like this, so that you use the 256gb cheap macmini without problems for storage!
Those two look cool together ngl
Oh hey I'm early!
The dock looks pretty sleek, didn't know this kind of thing existed before.
I would recommend NVME if you need a faster drive. With a Samsung T7 USB-C on my mac I am getting nearer to 900mb/s read and write. Cheaper than Thunderbolt enclose and drive.
Can you make a video „Best accessories for the M1 MacBooks“?
You are awesome👍
I was wondering if this is on a M1 or the Intel?
I got it just for the hard drive enclosure. The ports are a bonus. I don't even have the M1 yet. It's under the tree.
This is a very cool dock for the mini and the ports are definitely a must, now all I need is a mini!
Unrelated to the dock, just wanna ask if you're having problems with your bluetooth keyboard and mice. I'm planning to get one, I'm just hesitant because of m1 Mac minis bluetooth issues

Does the dock slow down the ssd or is it just a slow ssd? Can you do the test again with a fast ssd and see if it meets the claimed speed?
It slows down the ssd. I think that ssd is rated at like 450 ish and he's getting 300. It's fine for most video editing like he showed though.
It’s usb-c so it’s usb-c speed. For a for a storage drive it’s fine.
Could you test it with a non usb c device? My Mac mini is 2012 doesn’t have usb c.
that mac mini is looking great
What speed is the SD card reader?
That SSD compartment is handy AF!

You should check the speed test. Usually that’s the peoblem. Low external ssd, hdd and sd reads
Looks great. Hopefully they will enable faster SSD connection soon
How much of a speed hit would I experience if I use it for a 2012 i7 Mac Mini...Would it even be worth it??

How fast is the transmission? 200mb/s ? Your SSD Native speed is 500 MB/s?
TH-cam is recommending the 3rd video of this very dock to me in a 24-hour period.
They want you to buy it regardless if you've mini
They now make one that matches the Mac mini M1. Unfortunately it does not support all USB accessories for some reason. My Yubikey did not work.
Are you backing what you put on those hard drive, cause that's a lot of data if you lose it.
Nice and I would like a couple of USBC ports as well. I know it would need a power supply and plug in.
What’s with all the type A ports on the front? No NVME port either, long term this would drive me nuts.
I have 2 hubs (without drive enclosures) and you know what bugs me the most? There's no USB-C passthrough so you can daisy chain them together. This one here has the same deficiency IMO...
Having so big hull for just 4 ports 2 of which is outdated I'd rather buy (and I actually did for MacBook) kingston Nucleum or something like that

Thanks. I’ve just ordered one. AU$98 to me in Sydney.
It seems this would work well with an iPad Pro or even a PC or am I missing something?
I’d be interested to know what they read right speed would be on the SD card.
Can you remove that ssd mount from the screen without unmounting ssd 😁
I love my screen clean, but also hate to pay to apple 400$ fro ok memory 😁

So... would you recommend just getting the base Mac mini M1 w/ 256 and then add SSD through this dock? Trying to decide on a Mac Mini configuration
Great description and unboxing. Thankful !!!
Man if they made an m.2 version
Recently got a new M1 Mac mini and I just love everything about it. I may get this hub sooner or later.
Can I connect a thermal label printer to a Mac Mini? Something like a Rollo or Dymo

Any idea if this nice hub could be used for other connector challenged Apple gear, like 2018 Macbooks or even iPadS ?
I'm not sure if like the ports in the front, could be some wire mess, can the dock be turned so ports are in back?
I bought the hub. It has a great finish, but my 180 GB SSD for test is not recognized. Any idea how it could work?

Great Dock, I use if for my M1 Mac Mini setup. They just sell out very fast! 👍

Mac mini nano
Would storing games on this SSD dock impact my game performance because the read/write speed is slower than the built in storage?
reviewers say the SSD performance is pretty bad. and you lose 1 type c port for the connection without a replacement on board.
If the only usb-c port is taken up by this hub and you need the usb-c port to plug in a monitor adaptor (usb-c to dvi) is there a workaround?
The write/read is pretty shoddy tbh.
I've just attached 2 x 2tb SSD to the back, 1 usb-A and 1 to the thunderbolt with a sata to usb-c - both drives get pretty much 360/360 read and write.
Sure, it looks ugly, but my mini is out of sight on top of my under desk drawers.
It could just be the SSD you attached, but I doubt it - seems more like the unit itself is not capable of delivering decent speeds?
I'm interested in this concept anyway - but will hold out for something similar, but with NVMe capability - I'd love a super slim base in aluminium, that can take 2xNVMe drives.
Not too worried about ports, as the mini has two thunderbolt and two USB-A's - which, to be honest, is easily good enough.
Super easy to just have a cheap USB-3 dock for anything else you need.
It would be super cool if the cable to attach went into a thunderbolt port in the most minimal way possible - not even a cable, but a sort of clip, with thunderbolt ports on each part - and then at least one thunderbolt output port on the unit itself.
Dream on... :)
