My Moonman P135 finally arrived from China after almost two months. I am glade I ordered it! It is cute and it is a smooth writer right out of the box. Thank you Doug!
Ordered before you finished the review. Ordered in Dark Blue. Scheduled to arrive by Dec 31st. Will see, my last pen (Jinhao 100 Classic Sky Blue) arrived rather early. After watching your review I’m very glad I ordered it! Can’t wait for its arrival.
Hi Dug! You probably don´t know, but you have a friend in Mexico City already. Today I receive this Moonman P135. It´s all your fault! However I´m enchanted. The pen fulfills all the expectations you created in your video, it is a super nice pen. Thus dear Dug, I'm very thankful to you. It writes beautifully, right out of the box. Each pen has its own personality, and this nib its very refined. I'm going to buy the same Merlot Ink. Thanks again and best wishes dear pen pal.
Very cool! Thanks Albertos! You'll be interested in Saturday's review then! It is very similar to the Moonman P135 but has a #6 size nib and a wooden barrel!
Very nice video, Doug. You big sentimental softie with drawing your little heart. Awww. ❤️. I ordered one of these pens a couple of weeks ago and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival. I have no complaints at all with Moonman. I own 5 or 6 and they are very good writers that look & feel great. Their "tributes" are just that. There is no attempt to fool anyone. I think their quality is very good, especially considering the affordability. Let's say that this $30 Moonman is manufactured at a real cost of $8. I'm guessing but probably in the ballpark. The Montblanc is manufactured at a real cost of probably $150, mainly for the gold nib, and sold for about $900. Who is fooling whom? Thanks again for the fine video!
Huh, what a trip, my post didn't stick. Must be user error? Thank you for that ASMR...ahhh. So good. Love that sound. Wonderful addition. The Montblanc version never really interested me; however, this one is intriguing especially considering the price. Such a shame it isn't a #6 nib though. What a strange design choice. You picked the best of the bunch if you ask me. Happy Holidays!!! Keep staying healthy. Thank you!
Hi Doug, I got mine yesterday and instantly made a discovery. The jinhao 992 nib unit screws in the pen!! You have to use a jinhao converter which fits, but touches the sides a little. Pretty amazing really ☺️
Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I got one and love it. The MB Saint-Exupéry is my grail pen, so this was a nice alternative, especially since I write about aviation history. It writes beautifully! Mine is inked with El Lawrence right now.
I do like that cap, and at this price it is tempting. Haven't made any other Black Friday purchase either. Have the blue P135, Walnut M1000, and green M800 in the Etsy cart. Just thinking about it. Almost ready to pounce. These would go well with my purple M800.
In the maroon version, that is a very handsome pen. Materials and workmanship aside, I would call it more attractive than the original. Thanks for the review.
Professor Doug, This pen is a beautiful homage to an extraordinary pen. Like you the P135 is in my price range. Love the colour as well although the blue is also eye catching. I noticed your Beatles book in the background and it made me ponder if you might have the literary retrospective of the Ruttles somewhere on a shelf, inkquiring minds want to know.
I surprised myself when I realized that I like the looks of this pen, as I don't usually go for pens with metal caps. However, this has a classy look to it. I like the designs in relief that you find going around the cap. The one thing I don't particularly like he's the end of the cap. It seems like it's too foggy and obscure, with not a real clear point to why it looks the way it does. Thanks Doug, for your review! I may get this pen one day!
Thanks for sharing! I don't get the cloudy acrylic on the finial at all. If they just had a drop of clear acrylic (Moonman know how to make clear acrylic) on top of the abalone button, it would be wonderful.
@@gregcooper8466 I don't think so Greg. All the photos on Etsy show the same finials with the milky white. I actually though it was going to be solid milky white until I got one in my hand and saw the abalone underneath.
Hi Doug as the video started i liked the look of the pen but thought this will have a metal section(i only have one with a metal section the first & last) but to my relief it did not.I will have to put this one on my newyears list as i have never tried a fude nib.Superb video your fast becoming my favourite youtube reviewer.👌
Stylish. And seems to work well aside from that annoying converter issue. I have been eyeing the Delike Element pen with the fine bent nib, don't need it but liked the idea of it. The clip and the section on the P135 are giving it bonus points.
@@InkquiringMinds The MB section is shiny, as their precious are for looks and status, and most aren't used for writing much, if at all. On the other hand twenty dollar pen is going to be written with, so it shouldn't slip in hand.
I got one in dark blue as part of my Christmas haul today. My favorite pen shop carries some Chinese brands (Moonman, Jinhao, PenBBS, Delike) and what's not in stock can be ordered.
@@InkquiringMinds Some are phonetic symbols to transcribe Chinese still used in Taiwan to teach kids before they learn Chinese characters others are common strokes that are components of characters. I prefer the cap on the burgundy. 😆

Another great review. Y’know, I think I like this cap design better than the original or the other two versions. I might consider this pen for the cap design alone - and I don’t like metal caps
Totally agree, J! A subscriber commented on the fingerprint issue with the chrome cap and said that Renaissance Wax reduces that. I'm on my way to Lee Valley to pick up some of that and see how it works! It might solve the problem I have with quite a few of my pens. :)
A truly wonderful Quote, It fits with this community almost like a glove, though I'm sure it could fit in most other communities as well.I'm also Glad to see that the bent option on the nib means a Waverly nib as oppose to a full on fude nib. I have several bent nibs that are more like the Hongdian bent nib than the mini fude style that I prefer. Might have to look into grabbing one of these while i wait for my replacement nib on my m600s, cracked the nib collar pulling to hard. :p
Very detailed and informative review sir. i wonder if the nib is the same size with the one on MOONMAN F9 series ? maybe also some information on whether moonman will sell the nib separately ? ( just in case of broken nib sleeve / defective nib ). I had 3 moonman f9 color & 1 of them got a heavily baby bottomed nib...need some works to fix it. With the moonman m800 ( moonman nib version ), i just buy a replacement nib thats very cheap.
Yes, definitely. The F9 has the same size #5 nib and even though the design on the nib is different, it should be identical in size to the nib on the P135. It is the same with the M800 and the standard #6 size nib - Yowo, Bock, Schmidt should all fit. Mileage may vary on how well they conform to the feed of course.
Great video as always. Seems like a really nice pen, with as you say, some clever "homage" going-on. PS: Also like the new "magic wand" thingy you're using for a pointer.
Great to hear! Yeah, the cap doesn't grip well on that slick tapered barrel. I give it a bit of a twist to secure it but worry I'll damage the plastic cap threads.
I have several moonman T1 and they are excellent quality. I noticed this pen a week ago and ordered the red one in EF (not bend). I think the black and blue versions actually carry Chinese markings/texts. Perhaps someone can translate those for us so we know what they say. I think moonman is making these pens to show what quality they are able to deliver, perhaps hoping to make parts for montblanc. By the way, montblanc ink is reasonably priced and I got the 60ml burgundy red to go with this pen so I hope they play nice 😁 Great informative review, time well spend, thanks!
I also have all four colors, and they are some of my favorite writers. I pushed my blue M800 for six hours, recording some notes about the history of Thanksgiving.
Greetings from Australia. Brilliant!!!! Another pen for my collection. Most of the pens you review end up in my collection. Would you say that this pen is a more enjoyable experience than the M1000 "tribute" pen? It would be great if it came in a #6 nib.
From down below in the U.S., thankful for the fun, interesting content you provide and the effort which, as we know, is raking in millions for you. ;) Clipping your mike to the plastic to enhance the asmr, lol! I hate asmr, so creepy. The pen is pretty and so is that ink. I find the cap design which is sort of like something, but not really, but is, but isn't a bit weird. "Moonblanc!" Still laughing! Cheers, Doug!
"Moonblanc" was from a comment by subscriber Ken Crooker. He commented on my announcement of the video and I stole his idea and Photoshopped the logo. LOL
@@InkquiringMinds - I laughed out loud when I saw that in there. Thanks for the shout-out! I initially wasn't interested in this one because I'm not a fan of metal caps on plastic/acrylic bodies. But you may have convinced me to pick one up. You've been very adept lately at convincing me to part with my money.
I doubt Leonardo or Montblanc are injured parties if these copies or imitations are not passed off as the originals for much higher prices. If I could afford the real deals I might buy some but otherwise I’m looking for specific pen qualities I like & need that are found in some expensive pens I can’t afford! Arthritic wrists & thumbs like bigger diameter pens that are light weight and not made of heavy, cold metal! #6 nib preferred to keep wrist up off the paper plus allowing for different grips when hand gets tired--and good nib & ink to just float across the paper!! So Doug keep the affordable suggestions coming and for good replacement nibs! Thanks!!
If I can butt in, you could check out the handmade ebonite pens made in India by Ranga and others. Ebonite is light even in a big pen. It feels particularly nice in a matte finish. The pens are available in acrylic as well, which is a bit lighter than ebonite. You can get Ranga pens in various sizes with #6 Western Jowo or Bock nibs. The new Ranga Abhimanyu model is short but girthy and uncaps in about 1 turn (others tend to need several turns). The Pilot Kakuno might be a good one to try too, but has a smaller nib.
Nice review and very fitting quotes! If these pens were movies I'd compare them to "The Thing from Another World" (1951) and "The Thing" (1982). Both are interpretations of the same story ("Who goes there" by John W. Campbell from 1938). Although the results are very different both movies are classics in their own right and you can detect the original story in both of them. Regardless of the price the MB is way too heavy for me but the Moonman could be interesting. This time the Moonman nib seems to be ok compared to the one on the M800 which I had to replace with a Bock nib.
I've read "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell. Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982) is much closer to that original story. My son-in-law had never seen "The Thing" (1951). So, I loaned him my DVD and gave him a task... there is a visual joke in the finale of the film, find it! The joke is the soldiers spend a great deal of effort barricading an inside door and when the monster comes to the door, it opens in instead of out and he simply opens it and knocks down the barricade. Hilarious!
@@InkquiringMinds Yes, the John Carpenter Movie is much closer to the original but it is also more a horror movie where the older movie is more family-friendly Sci-Fi action. The same joke with the door is repeated in "The Big Lebowski" when The Dude tries to block his door with a chair.
Mr. Indi, very nice video 👌as usual 🤷 nice good looking pen. But, the ink is more beautiful. Resembles a good aged wine. 👌👌. Sir, would you please find some time in looking into some Indian handmade pens like click aristocrat, falcon, vazir, Ranga full ebonite pens, etc
They do! Of all the organizations that I've worked for in my life, L&M are the best vendors (customer support) and employers (employee support, training, benefits - wages not so great but...). L&M have one of THE best performance warranties in the world.
A very pretty pen, just like the one is making homage 🤭. Although, not my cup of coffee ☕. Thank you for the video Doug. 👍 PS. Actually, I'm waiting eagerly for my Sailor 4 seasons Yukitsubaki... like a 🐕🦺 for the postman 😅.
A jeweler's trick : you can reduce the finger marks by polishing the metal parts with a microcrystalline wax (I like the Renaissance brand but any microcrystalline wax polish will do). The finger marks will still appear but less noticeably.
@@InkquiringMinds I forgot. Be careful not to put any wax on any part where the ink needs to flow (nib, feed, threads that touch the converter and/or feed assembly, inside the housing of the feed, the tip of the converter, etc.)
I just ordered some microcrystalline wax from Lee Valley. Picking it up this afternoon. I'll be interested to see how it works on this pen. Thanks again.
Sorry, but my French is as bad s yours, although I always thought it was San zoo pray (Saint-Exupéry). But perhaps we’re both wrong. 🧐🤓🥸 Way back in the 70s this (the Little Prince) was a favorite book of mine. Too bad I could never afford the MontBlanc version. I did however purchase my Parker Duofold Centennial after one of your other homage reviews. Love your reviews, keep it up. PM me - I have a question.
Well I rely on google translate (the audio option) to pronounce French and Italian etc. Sometimes it is way off. There is no PM option in TH-cam so you'll have to email me. My address is in the description.
The cap doesn't go on the back of the pen at all? That's odd. I know mine will work itself loose if I don't press it on firmly, but it goes over the back of the barrel with a LOT of clearance.
@@InkquiringMinds so I had ordered two of these P135. One in red burgandy and one in navy. Navy arrived today and this one posts pretty well. Seems like a quality control issue. Still not a big deal.
Great review. Not for me, though, but I like the review. The Mb 149 was - and still is - called Mb Diplomat. I don't think it is an official name, but ask google, and you will see it is still living as a Diplomat.
If you look past the superficial resemblance part, the pen is well executed and worth the price, I had the real Montblanc but I am going to buy this one. The le petit prince range is fast becoming Montblanc's take on Fashion , let's just had it season to season . I certainly do not like all the Chinese Safari doppelganger pen, nor Moonman's own M8800, M600 but this is something else while the styling is a straight take somewhat there is enough of a change and enough of identity put on it to clearly say it " no I am not a certain Montblanc or certain Parker "
I going to cure my PAS and just buy a MB149. Trouble is how to convince my wife it’s just another run of the mill collectibles! Doug, check out the new issue of the Parker 51 at Akkerman. 👍🇨🇦
@@InkquiringMinds With a screw on cap how can it be a 51. Truly a madness and a cash grab. If they remade the original I would get it, but this Chinese made pen with extraorbitant markup is pure nonsense.
I noticed how you stirred the pot of controversy in the writing sample quote section. At least Moonman has put this pen in the price(prince) range of most people. I don't think it will damage Mont Blanc's balance sheet.
@@InkquiringMinds I know, and I like that leather clad cap. I am sure I would like it. But can't see justifying that purchase. Now their new gold flex nib is interesting, and probably unique, and the maker of handmade equivalents is retired, so perhaps that is well worth the price seeing there is no modern equivalent to it. Still a month's rent/mortgage, or multiple of it, is something one doesn't spend lightly. They do make nice high end presents though, especially for big achievements like college graduations and such. I think collectors and gift givers are their big markets.
I think that MOONMAN epitomises better than others a certain 'state of the art' in the present chinese production. What difference in nib points !!, in comparison to the japanese standards.
Well probably large enough , both international and home market . For an interesting bit of info , both Mau's jacket and the Nahru jacket are neither original , that style of jacket was popular in China and India way before them and was influenced by clothing fashion from Indo-China / S.E. Asiaregion from late 19 century .
Alright, lawsuits are not coming but the pen seems good enough to be experimented on. Thank you Sir Doug for the controversy of the day (Was it a #6 nib??)
My question : If you had the means to by the original ($1800) would you. Me, no way it's to much cash for any fountain pen... Thanks for the excelent review.
I might be a MontBlanc then, but a different one. Certainly not a cartridge convertor. The bigger La Petite Prince inspired pen looks pretty nice. Still not until I was filthy rich, and not just could I afford it.
If it's the case, Moonman does it elegantly. I can't say the same for the ugly fakes of 146s and 149s that you can see right now on Taobao/Aliexpress/ebay at $38 each (BlackFriday prices). Although things so ugly looked closely have their ironic beauty.
Yes, this pen is a very playful shot over MB's bow. Not that they will notice. Pen's two orders of magnitude separation on price simply do not compete with each other.
@@greyareaRK1 I have seen the M1000. It came out just before this P135. It is over-priced and has a slick metal section. I've been tempted to get one just to do a video, but that price is harsh.
A wise woman once told me to beware the one-idea person for s/he would likely fight nearly to the death protecting that one idea. But a many-idea person might likely be copied or imitated on an idea whereupon if no one is harmed by the imitation the many-idea person might likely just shrug and have many more ideas.
@@stargazer1359 My favourite memory of Ruth Gordon is her picking up the butcher's knife after Mia Farrow dropped it in Rosemary's Baby and then she tisks and rubs the mark it made on her hardwood floor - a totally in the moment improvision by the actress I have no doubt. I also saw her live on stage with Lynn Redgrave in "Mrs. Warren's Profession" at the Lincoln Center.
Can we agree to use "pounce" only in the context of buying special cat editions of PenBBS pens? My heart skipped a bit when you used it in this video... ;-)
For the reasons you imply (impossible to really know who first had an “idea”), mere ideas are not even patentable. There are a number of other requirements (useful, novel, something that can be “real” (my word, not the law’s), etc.). In the USA, we do not patent mere designs. We do get some rather bizarre situations whereby a Russian might anticipate that a hybrid car needs a device to “tell” the car whether the gas or the electric engine is driving the car’s motion, design one and patents it. Another group compensates him and buys the patent. Toyota and other innovators, unable to negotiate a reasonable price, simply go ahead and use the patented part. The entity holding the patent sues the car companies (typically in Texas, where, for some strange reason the highest award damages result). The real issue in the Federal Court is what the fair price is for each patented part, which turned out to be something like $100 per car! Each of us needs to understand that most income disparity at the newly minted billionaire-level (the one shocking us because billionaires control around 90% of the world’s wealth) occurs because of monopolies legal in countries like Mexico and other less-developed areas (one company controlling grocery stores or electric power or telephones) and monopolies granted for very long periods by technologically advanced countries like the USA. If monopolies truly rewarded innovation just enough to stimulate innovation (then invited competition), inventors would still be enriched, while not obscenely so. Socialists do not understand that it is law passed by Congress (sometimes after obscene amounts of lobbying dollars are spent, much of which explains why many who go to Washington as middle class come out as multi-millionaires. Influence dollars paid directly are clearly bribes; influence dollars paid more creatively to campaigns and consultants are usually not illegal (at least Washington D.C. shows no interest into pursuing the creative influence peddlers). I could go on. Exceptionalism, especially when acquired by one league (the NBA) leads to insane prices for talent. Of course, we now have the same exceptional athletes lobbying for equality for all! Go figure.

@@InkquiringMinds I do some modification by put a paper tape inside the cap above the threads. its worked . Now it’s post securely.
Thank you, Netjez!
the chinese read as “Fu”, means blessing
Just rec.my last m800 now I have all 4 colors. I'm addicted.
I can't wait for them to produce more colours of the M800.
I also have all four colors, and they are some of my favorite writers. I pushed my blue M800 for six hours, recording some notes about the history of Thanksgiving.
I have three; Amber, Blue and Green. My MZ Blue Hawaii rounds out the set. :)
@@InkquiringMinds But that Purple........
@@BIBLEBELIEVERSVIDEO I'm not big on purple so I let that one pass.
Greetings from Australia.
Brilliant!!!!
Another pen for my collection. Most of the pens you review end up in my collection.
Would you say that this pen is a more enjoyable experience than the M1000 "tribute" pen?
It would be great if it came in a #6 nib.
Glad you like them! Yes. The P135 is definitely better than the M1000 (door stop)
From down below in the U.S., thankful for the fun, interesting content you provide and the effort which, as we know, is raking
in millions for you. ;) Clipping your mike to the plastic to enhance the asmr, lol! I hate asmr, so creepy. The pen is pretty and
so is that ink. I find the cap design which is sort of like something, but not really, but is, but isn't a bit weird. "Moonblanc!" Still
laughing!
Thanks!!
Thank you, Rebecca!
@@meh8982 Thanks, Meh!
Yes! LOL
Thank you so much 😀 I will continue to look but my first experience was not good.

A very pretty pen, just like the one is making homage 🤭. Although, not my cup of coffee ☕.
Thank you for the video Doug. 👍
PS. Actually, I'm waiting eagerly for my Sailor 4 seasons Yukitsubaki... like a 🐕🦺 for the postman 😅.
Thanks for watching! Good luck with your Sailor!
A jeweler's trick : you can reduce the finger marks by polishing the metal parts with a microcrystalline wax (I like the Renaissance brand but any microcrystalline wax polish will do). The finger marks will still appear but less noticeably.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
Bonus trick: you can use the same wax on a paper with text written with any ink and it will make it waterproof!
@@InkquiringMinds I forgot. Be careful not to put any wax on any part where the ink needs to flow (nib, feed, threads that touch the converter and/or feed assembly, inside the housing of the feed, the tip of the converter, etc.)
@@thorhilda Yes! Thanks. I am careful with silicone grease for the same reasons.
I just ordered some microcrystalline wax from Lee Valley. Picking it up this afternoon. I'll be interested to see how it works on this pen. Thanks again.
Doug, The Montblanc Meisterstuck 149 is also called The Diplomat in many advertisements.
That's good to know Kevin, thanks!
@@InkquiringMinds , you are welcome. of course Montblanc took the name from the Diplomat pen company!
@@kevinlandon7578 Bastards! LOL
Recently received mine. It doesn't post at all. Has anyone else faced the same issue?
The cap doesn't go on the back of the pen at all? That's odd. I know mine will work itself loose if I don't press it on firmly, but it goes over the back of the barrel with a LOT of clearance.
@@InkquiringMinds it does go on the back just quite loose. Similar to my Cross Bailey. Not a big issue. It is still a lot of pen for the money.
@@aristotlejb82 Yes! That is exactly how my Cross Bailey behaves as well. It is frustrating as it works it's way loose while you write.
That's really good to know. Thanks Ove. I wonder if they pay royalties for the name from Diplomat? LOL
@@InkquiringMinds Of course they do. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Thanks, Frank. I thought the three caps and colours were very clever of Moonman.
I going to cure my PAS and just buy a MB149. Trouble is how to convince my wife it’s just another run of the mill collectibles! Doug, check out the new issue of the Parker 51 at Akkerman. 👍🇨🇦
I saw them at Appelboom. It is very hard to justify that price when it isn’t even close the the original.
@@InkquiringMinds With a screw on cap how can it be a 51. Truly a madness and a cash grab. If they remade the original I would get it, but this Chinese made pen with extraorbitant markup is pure nonsense.
@@martinlebl631 I've been saying the same thing. The Hero 616 is better than this.
I noticed how you stirred the pot of controversy in the writing sample quote section. At least Moonman has put this pen in the price(prince) range of most people. I don't think it will damage Mont Blanc's balance sheet.
MB won't even notice.
Unlikely to pay $1300+ for cartridge convertor of any sort. If I ever get a MontBlanc, then it will be one of the bigger models.
@@martinlebl631 The bigger one is a piston filler.
That section is a little too smallish for me, but it's a handsome pen, nonetheless!
Thanks, Dave. It is on the slender side for me too but still a bit girthier than the TWSBI.
if this pen is using a piston filler mechanism I will consider getting one, haha
It is a captured converter.
I think that MOONMAN epitomises better than others a certain 'state of the art' in the present chinese production.
What difference in nib points !!, in comparison to the japanese standards.
Yes indeed!
Does the Chinese market really crave these copies? I used to think that the Mao jacket was really a rip-off of the Nehru jacket.
There has to be a big market for these in the east. I think the east market is much larger than we few old cursive writers in the west.
Well probably large enough , both international and home market . For an interesting bit of info , both Mau's jacket and the Nahru jacket are neither original , that style of jacket was popular in China and India way before them and was influenced by clothing fashion from Indo-China / S.E. Asiaregion from late 19 century .
@@MechFrankaTLieu Thanks, Franka!
Alright, lawsuits are not coming but the pen seems good enough to be experimented on. Thank you Sir Doug for the controversy of the day
(Was it a #6 nib??)
It is a #5 size nib, just like the MB. :)
Another great review. I'm going to become broke watching your channel
LOL! Enjoy!
My question : If you had the means to by the original ($1800) would you. Me, no way it's to much cash for any fountain pen... Thanks for the excelent review.
Not on your life Luc! :)
I might be a MontBlanc then, but a different one. Certainly not a cartridge convertor. The bigger La Petite Prince inspired pen looks pretty nice. Still not until I was filthy rich, and not just could I afford it.
I can't tell if Moonman is taking the piss, and/or is simply aghast at Montblanc's prices. Gorgeous pen. I'm in.
I think we are all aghast at MB prices - except for those who can afford them - I'm looking at you Rudy!
@@InkquiringMinds Have you had a look at the Moonman M1000? At first glance it looks like a wood version of the P135.
There is always more than one good solution or idea. To stop and box up one idea is stagnation.
I think you mean, "CDO" which is OCD in correct alphabetical order.
But then it is Cute Doug Our?
Pen now under $20 USD on eBay. You could also say they are using a Delike bent nib design. Overall not a design I like. Too many shiny bits.
I might have a solution to the shiny bits. Film coming.

I am trying to avoid pouncing on Penbbs. Bad for my pocketbook. But I expect I'm going to pounce again soon.
Go figure.
