- I'm working on Deer Creek, a HAED design, by Dona Gelsinger. This video explains my parking method to eliminate column lines and how I end threads without turning the frame. For this project, I am using 2 over 1 tent stitch on 25 count lugana.

Wow! I’ve been cross-stitching for over 40 years and you do amazing work. And I learned something new today. 🙏
All I can say is WOW! I've seen other videos on parking, but this is the first one that seemed to explain it clearly enough for me to consider giving it a try as I kit up my very first HAED! Thank you so much.
I've been cross stitching for 25 years and have never seen this technique! It's blowing my mind. Haha💕
I can't imagine doing it any other way now!
This is super complex but i really do like how unique this is. Youre so organized!
Oh my goodness....I am just gobsmacked by your incredibly detailed work! This is a work of art! Best wishes to you!
Oh my, I would never even consider such an involved project. I certainly admire your creativity and the beautiful piece you are working. Thanks for sharing.
I started my first complex cross-stitch using the parking method and good thing i remembered your video because i was getting the column lines!
Brilliant tutorial!! I've just got my first HAED and have been a bit scared to start, but this is so easy to understand! Thanks 😊👍
THank you so much for this awesome tutorial! So clear and easy to follow. It was very timely for me as I have just started my first HAED design and am trying parking for the first time. I really appreciate your explanations and your telling your reasons why you do or don't do something. I think that is very helpful in deciding what would work best for me. Your work is beautiful , by the way!
I have never ever seen anybody end their threads this way and I think it's quite intriguing. If it saves time, I don't care if it wastes floss. I've searched for other videos on this technique to no avail. Would love to see more info on it.
Wow! I have only done a couple basic patterns and want to try out something larger/more complicated but it’s so intimidating. Confetti stitching is super scary to me but you make it seem manageable!! Thank you!
Going to start my first HAED design in the new year. This was very helpful and I'm sure I will watch it over and over again. Thanks
I've never seen this before. (I didn't even know it was a Thing.) Thank-you for sharing it.
I'm stunned, I have no words, wow you are a true master!
I'd like to see more about how you're ending, I'm not sure I followed. Parking component was great though, thanks.
Thanks so much for doing this tutorial. I'm learning so much about parking!
Your project looks amazing.
great respect for this amazing works👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌😍❤
Thanks for a great video. I have to take my hat off to you parking stitchers. I know I would end up in a right muddle and not to mention tangle😮
Incredibly helpful video for a beginner thank you!
Thank you so much for this, I have watched a ton of videos on parking... but yours made sense to me :-)
Beautiful stitching.
How long are these threads and do they not start to get damaged from pulling them through so many times. .. thanks for your help.. just starting out with cross stitch
Great video. I’m trying your methods on a big project. When you say you snip your fringe… how do you do that? Are you snipping on the front to make them shorter then pulling the short threads to the back? I’m just starting a second row to secure the first chunk of fringe and the threads for the second row fringe are running over the fringe from the first row. Thanks!
Thank you for your video. Like Kita, I would be interested in learning more about your ending technique.
So many close colors. I am working on Golden brown Tabby Cat with a scarf and birds that have tons of greens browns golds in shades . I am trying to park method with post it note tags on needle minder .
I want to look at your back stitching
Hello! Thank you so much for creating this tutorial. I haven't finished watching yet, so forgive me if you've addressed this. Can you show us what the back looks like?
Now that's a complicated pattern! I'm new to your channel and I've just subscribed : )
This is the best parking video I've seen so thank you! I didn't even know parking was a thing until recently so I'm giving it a shot but struggling. I use GoodReader as well and love it. But I've been looking everywhere for an app that will search by symbol and can't find one - which ones were you referring to? I'd love to search by symbol! Thanks again for the detailed video!
I don't have an app that searches for the symbol. The ones that do tend to crash and I can't deal with that. Pattern Keeper is new but only for Android and it works for that. Since I don't stray far from my stitched part, I don't find a need to search.
Can you please demonstrate how you end threads on your final row
Please do a video on how you do cross stitch with multiple needles. Please please please
May I ask the name of your program that you use to keep track of your progress?
This is so so very very helpful!! Thank you! I will use this method now x
I feel like this method just wastes so much thread.
Too difficult and wasting time...
New to cross stitch and your channel. Parking sounds very confusing. What screen are you using to enlarge your pattern?
That’s bloody amazing 🪡🪡
That is insanity to me, but as I do more and larger projects it becomes appealing. I'm not entirely clear on the ending, you just thread it back up to the top with the others and eventually just stitch over it securing it?
That design is gorgeous too.
Good Demo. Can you give the names of some of the apps you referred to that recognize symbols? I don’t even know what to search for. I know you said they crash, but I still would like to investigate them. Thanks!
Hi did you ever finish this piece? Please show us if you did.😀
Awesome video! Can you show the back of your work? How much extra floss do you think you use with your parking method? How long does it take you to stitch a 10x10 square with he heavy confetti? Love seeing all your end thread fringe and your stitching is lovely. Just subscribed to your channel.
I’ll try to show the back in another video soon. It’s neat and tidy. I don’t think parking uses additional floss. You are just carrying to the next stitch just like you would with cross country, but you aren’t stitching the next stitch until later. Ending threads this way might use a couple of extra inches, but I don’t really notice that it uses much more.
It can take up to 90 minutes to do a very heavy confetti square. Most of the time, it’s more like 40.
What kind of software or program are you using that you can designate stitches like you are. I
Can't imagine doing anything that detailed. Gorgeous work.
Goodreader for iPad.
@@sherryxstitching3227 Any idea of a good PDF program for Android users?
@@sherryxstitching3227 do you have to get the goodreader pro or is the basic app good enough? I need that app for my stitching. Especially if I’m going to try this parking method which is new to me.
May I ask what count fabric this is on? This is BEAUTIFUL.
I think she said 24 in the video
Ok, this is great! I don’t understand the ending stitches. What happens to all those threads at the top?
Very good tutorial! My one question is how long to cut the thread initially?
Thanks, but I still don’t understand about the fringe part at all??????
Oh, I'm glad to see this video is recent. I'm considering starting my first large project (300+ by 200+)... I understand your method of parking and ending threads. I'm more curious about your frame and your fabric... what's the total size and count? What frame do you use and where did you get it? I've always been a hoop kind of guy (stitch with one hand, hold the hoop with the other), but a round hoop on a project that size... means a LOT of moving the hoop! Thanks
This one is 400x600 on 25 count, so it will be 16x20 inches. This is a Millenium Frame from Needle Needs (UK) and it is awesome, except that it takes months to receive. They are a family run business with too many orders to fill. I also have an Omanik Quantum frame from Estonia, and it works the same and took much less time to receive. Link below.
omanikfactory.com/
Ah yes, 25 count lugana... I missed it in the description. I used to do 22 count Aida... now I need 2.75x magnification just to do 14 count. "What a drag it is getting old." Thanks so much!
Daniel Lucas I use a magnifier for sure!
Can you show how you end your threads as I use waste knots and not as neat as yours ;( How many row do you go over and do you cut them off on the front or from the back?
Informative, however I see the end threads as a lot of waste, this is not a method I will ever use. I use waste knots in front of the work in a 10 x 10 square and also park in the same square or just in the very next 10 x 10 block if the symbol is there, but only if it is about 2 or 3 stitches away from the edge of the previous block otherwise I will end it off with waste knot and start again with a waste knot when I get to the the symbol in the next block. Ah my word, hope you will make sense of my way (sometimes I confuse myself in trying to explan my way of doing stuff)
This a great parking demo. I see that you do not grid. I am not yet confident enough to not grid. I also use Goodreader. I have three questions. What are the red highlighted squares for? How did you get the dark red color in Goodreader? Do you always start with a new full length thread? I notice no partial threads. Thank you!
I do not grid because I never stray far. It's just an extra step that I don't want to deal with (LOL). 1) I use the red to signify that I have completed the 10x10 square. I think it just gives me a sense of accomplishment on such a huge project. 2) Once you click on "highlight," if you click on the color you are using, it gives you the option to choose a different color. There are four options. To the right of the four options, there is an "other color" option. If you click that, you can choose any color of the rainbow. It will always store your last four used colors. 3) Yes, I always begin with a full length thread, but I park it until it gets too short. Once it starts to get too short, I end it. There are some shorter ones parked in with the longer ones, but I still pull them into the same group even though they might not reach the clip. Hope this helps!
Sherry X Stitching, Thank you for answering all of my questions. I am going to give your method a try.
When you say too short and you end it...how do you end it? If it is too short to pull up to your top pile of ended threads? Or do you never let it get that short?
At 14:13 on the video, you say that there are several apps that will search for a symbol, although the tend to crash a lot. Could you tell us the names of any of these apps? Thank you.
That tiny mistake bottom would drive me absolutely crazy
Hi again when you snip your ends do you turn your canvas and clip or do you cut close to canvas on front? Thanks for answering me previous question.
Janet Lynn Edwards I clip them at the front and run the needle along the back at that row to pull the last little bit through.
Are you making full cross stitches or just stitching each stitch in one direction?
Wow great video since you park and then put to the top to stop the threads how many squares will you go over/ between with the thread or does it really not matter since the other stitches will lock it down
I make a row maybe 50 stitches away from where I’m starting and then work my way up until I’m within 20 or so and then I snip.
Yes!! I love the loose end start and stop! I don't park, mainly because I don't do HAEDs or anything near them, but this is an excellent video! Thank you!!! QQ: Do you stitch over your loose ends for only 1 row or do you do a few rows before you cut them off? Do you start a new thread this way, too? :)
Deb Ovall I stitch a row (10 stitches high) before snipping.
How long did the entire project take you?
this was so helpful. thank you🎅
If I am understanding, When you have finished all of the page and are ready to move onto the next. You want to stitch one more row in order to make sure all of the waste threads are stitched over and locked down. But when starting that new row, how do you differentiate the difference between the old fringe of waste threads and the new fringe of waste threads, I understand the new fringe will be up higher, but don’t the threads still get mixed together on the back , making it tricky to get to them?
I don't start a new row until I have snipped the old one (and the new row is naturally up higher like you said). They don't get mixed up.
What is the name of the app that you are using?
This video has helped me a lot and I like to share it whenever someone asks me about parking! I want to try tent stitch on my next project and I have a question about your tent stitching method. I think I heard you say that you always stitch tent from left to right. When you come to the end of your piece on the right side, do you end your threads there and restart them on the left side? Or do you work upwards, than head in rows from right to the left? Hope that makes sense - beautiful work!
eeyipes Always left to right. When I come to the end on the right, I park the thread above until I come to it on the next row or end it.
@@sherryxstitching3227 Thanks so much!
How do you begin a thread without turning your frame over? Thanks for the clear explanation!
emchoc00 That’s the only reason I turn the frame over is to begin a thread. I use a loop start so I don’t have to run it under.
Got it. Thank you!
Hi. Do you do your back stitching as you go along?
No back stitching on a HAED design!
I can't do that. That's hard to follow, I mean if you skip a space it will be hard to count compared to aida cloth
Would love to follow you on FB. What is the name of your page? Just an intermediate stitcher at this point but would love to get to larger pieces such as this. I tend to be a perfectionist and your work looks very neat
What kind of fabric are you uing.......
Love this tutorial. I was just wondering when you get to the top of the project how to you secure the fringe? Do you just run the fringe behind the stitches of that top row or do you have another method of securing it?
Haven't gotten there yet - but I plan to run them under.
Do you ever use a "laying too" If not - should a beginner, in your opinion, use one?
Janet Lynn Edwards I think cross stitch takes so long already that I don’t like any extra things to do. My stitches lie neatly and if they start to look twisted, I just drop the needle and let it unwind. Works for me.
Your tutorial is one of the best I have seen! I’ve learned so much. My only problem is that you have a habit of sniffing every few seconds and it has become so annoying! It tends to really distract me!
Great video. I want to purchase the same style needle threader you use in your video. I have searched the net and can't find anything similar. Thanks
Janet Lynn Edwards I have trouble finding them also but they are awesome.
I don't understand your method in parking?
For the app, did you scan that pattern yourself or was it already a PDF from Heaven and Earth designs? I just don't want to spend $6 on an app and find out that it doesn't work on the PDFs I make myself by just scanning the pattern into my computer. Hope this makes sense. XD thanks for your help.
I Dream of Crafting It was one purchased from HAED. It won’t work correctly if you scan it in. You can pay an upgrade fee to get a PDF from HAED for a chart you already own.
@@sherryxstitching3227 thanks! I really appreciate you getting back to me!
I purchased GoodReader but their newest version does not recognize symbols. After I scanned my chart I tried to highlight my completed stitch and the program tells me there is no text under my finger. Do you know of a different app that would recognize the symbol? Thanks
You need to purchase the PDF from HAED. It won’t work if you scan a hard copy. The fee is $10 for a chart you already own.
Sherry, you are my hero! OMGoodness! Wow.
I don't do much confetti work but I always have any parked threads left on a needle to keep the speed up. I have a ton of needleminders on the top of my work to hold the needles and thread out of the way while I stitch. Seems tedious to rethread a needle every stitch
I would rather rethread than keep up with all those needles! Just takes a second! Interesting that we all have different ways that work for us.
Amazing video thank you so much!! Your work is extraordinary!! I am considering getting one of the Omanik frames for my first HAED - which size should I start with? Thanks again for your efforts in this video!
Donna I get wide bars (you can put a smaller piece on wide bars but can’t put a wider piece on small bars) but get the smallest stretchers. You don’t need the extra height because you can just scroll your work. Hope this helps.
What is a column line?
This is a great video, but I'm confused about how you would work your parking if you end up with a parked thread already being in a square when you need to park there? Does that happen?
Also it seems in the video (if I understand your highlighting and underlining system) that you've parked the same colour twice in one square?
I wouldn’t park a thread where another thread is parked. I only park in the top right corner of the square where that thread will be used next so there’s no way to have two threads parked in the same spot. If you’re referring to the fringe, that’s why it is about 20 stitches away. I still have room to park a row above my work but below the ended threads. I underline where a thread is parked but then highlight the stitch when it is complete. So some stitches will have both underlining and highlighting.
Can u please tell me what app you use to keep track of all your stitches for your haeds?im a newbie and starting my first one
I used Goodreader for iPad. Now I use Excel on a laptop.
Sherry X Stitching how do you get your pattern into Excel? I usually do a cross country stitch but this parking method is absolutely fascinating to me and I want to to give it a whirl, and think that having an electronic tracker will be much more methodical that crossing off my paper pattern.
This is genius.
looks awesome great tutorial. But your actually doing a needlepoint stitch not a crook stitch right? why?
You can do either. On full coverage pieces like HAED, it’s just quicker to do the /// instead of XXX. If you use double the strands you would use for standard cross stitch, it’s very difficult to tell the difference and goes twice as fast.
I just had my dog pic put in a cross stitch form and there will be lots of threads i may try the 2 over 1 like needle point. Thanks!!
Victoria Martin it looks great. It’s called tent stitch (or continental stitch or half cross stitch).
ahhh i meant to ask... what material are you using, how long are your threads to do this parking method. about to buy material now. i need a min of 18x18 that a 2" border. Thanks again
BEAUTIFUL
Are you by chance doing the #100daysofHAED challenge??? I swear I've seen pictures very similar to this in the group! Thanks for sharing your techniques!!! Question...with the app that you use, do you have to be connected to the internet for it to work? I use Adobe Reader on my Kindle but wouldn't mind giving another app a try...but I don't have WiFi at home. Thanks!
Sharon Kofoed Yes, I’m doing that challenge! No, you don’t need WiFi while stitching...just to download the chart initially.
Sweet...thanks!!! How fun that you are doing the challenge, too! I'm doing Treasure Hunt Bookshelf, but my pictures are being posted under my mom's name, since I'm not on Facebook :P I've loved watching your project progress!!!
Sharon Kofoed I’ve seen them! Awesome!
Thanks!!! :D
I am just resuming needlepoint and I want to do some detailed work like yours I love the density of color and pattern and the intricate detail you have going, the detailed tutorial is superb especially the bit about parking and keeping track of threads and lines the only thing I missed was what grade of meth you suggest to keep going all night long and what type of kleenex you use to absorb your epic deluge of nasal drips from staining the delicate embroidery you have tweaked out on.
Ha ha
Is the whole pattern just tent stitch or actual xstitch?
HAED designs are exquisite. Are there any other companies that offer similar charts?
Not many. Paine Free Crafts, Tilton Crafts are a couple but they don’t have near the number of charts to choose from.
Artery Cross Stitch and Serenity Stitchworks also have full coverage charts. I'm currently stitching Mini Green Eyes from Artecy, and came here to watch Sherry's video because I'm experimenting with different parking techniques.
Beautiful! Someday............
I just purchased my first HAED, it’s a mini. I found your channel. What size needle do you use with the 25 count?
I prefer 26. Some like 28, which is a bit small for me.
Sherry X Stitching Thank you!
Thank you for this video. I am trying to master this technique on my HAED Sunflower Bee after a very confetti heavy part that a struggled through CC. I now nearly finished a row of page 4 and I keep wondering: won't you get row lines instead of collumn lines? In your video you say that one never sees rowlines. Why is that?
I have no idea, but I’ve never seen row lines. In general, it’s a tension issue, and since we tend to work left to right anyway, maybe that’s why we don’t see row lines.
When you have a very complicated pattern like that, how are you able to tell what colors match the key? Like if there's ten shades of brown sometimes it's hard to tell which one goes where
The chart has a symbol for each shade. I don't go by the color but by the symbol, and I park each thread in the spot where it will be used next and mark it on the chart.
I will park if a large project, but I can't do that many thread!!!
What software/app are you using on your tablet to highlight and mark stitched/parked stitches? Thanks!
Stacey Goldstein I use Goodreader for iPad.
WOULD you PRETTY PLEASE, flip the entire piece over & show us the back. PLEASE!
Aren’t you wasting a lot of thread with this parking method?
The Point of It All (thepointofitallonline.com) carries the needle threader you use. Just and FYI
I bought several because I love them so much.
It seems to me to be a lot of wasted threads. Does the piece end up being more bulky than any other method?
Marny5580 No, it’s not bulky and there’s really not much thread wasted. Once I get to the point that I would run it under to end it, I just pull it up instead. Looks like a lot because they are all just sitting there staring at you. 😬
@@sherryxstitching3227 This process without knowing all the ins and outs has stopped me from doing intense patterns. Now I'm in my 80s and have lots of UFOs and WIPs - so have to be aware of time. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
What method do you use to hold your threads for your projects?
See my organization video! I use small zip top bags and a bin. I don't like to wind bobbins or take the thread on and off of them.
Hi! Can I ask what app you're using for the pattern?
I believe it’s GoodReader for Apple iPad
Doesn’t parking use a tremendous amount of excess thread?
No, maybe a little but not a tremendous amount. If you were stitching cross country with confetti, you’d still have to start and end single stitches. There’s no difference.
what is the name of the needlethreader and where to purchase it,
Needlework threader - I think is what it says on the front. I googled it and bought all I could find from various needlework shops.
