Congratulations on finding success in retirement here in the Philippines! This is a great message for all us retirees - turn your interests into a hobby and maybe that hobby will become a passion. You might even excavate some unknown skills that have been buried in your DNA. For me, I discovered an extreme liking for wood working and general carpentry. Fitness and training has become the center of my daily routine. More exercise and a lot less San Miguel has been an immense improvement in my quality of life here in Antique, Philippines.
Yes, what you say is true and correct when it comes to hobbies and alcohol. Many foreigners ruin their lives by drinking from morning to night. Be active and enjoy life without alcohol and be careful on a motorbike, better by car as you are safer. Far too many fatal accidents on motorcycles no matter how careful you are. Lived for 10 years on Bantayan Island and in Cebu City, Santa Fe is my favorite place. Boredom is experienced everywhere and it becomes more troublesome with age plus the depression that often accompanies it. I'm 67 years old but I feel like I'm 30 in my head, that helps a bit hehe
I used to be an expat in Ukraine, and obviously that had to come to an end... And so now I will be checking out the Philippines. But you are really correct about boredom. When I stopped being a tourist and then did my first long stay in Ukraine, even being in a resort city like Odessa I was thoroughly bored after only 4 weeks. And meeting girls did not make it any less boring, just more expensive. It's then that I remembered I had hobbies. If you don't have hobbies, its good to cultivate them before doing any kind of long stay in another country. In my case, I'm a writer and I love photography. The architecture in Odessa was fascinating, so there was always something to try to catch on camera. In the quieter moments, I did my research for writing, or wrote my articles. Actually, I found it pays to be quite discipllined about it. I mean, to treat your hobbies like they are your profession. Put the hours in, and reward yourself with the "remuneration" of a beer with some friends afterwards. Oh yes - and that's the other thing I found. The locals were curious about having a Brit in their apartment complex, so I would get invites for coffee and a chat. Was a little difficult, because I hardly spoke any Russian at first (Odessa is a Russian speaking city, but would not be surprised if even the ethnic Russian Ukrainians of the city insist on speaking Ukrainian because of this war from now on). But getting out and not being afraid to try to make friends, not being afraid to try to speak the language, this was a great way to learn to culture more, make friends, and be much less bored. Great video. Thanks.
My Filipina wife of 10 years and I came here to Cavite from the US 6 months ago. I was going to sell my guitars before we left, but I'm sure glad I brought them with me. No doubt I would be bored if I hadn't. I'm planning to get a motor bike after the holidays. I love living here. I retired a year ago and enjoy the laid back lifestyle here. I'd rather be bored than have to work 12 hour overnight shifts as I have for the past 40 years. Thank you for sharing your experience here. In the Philippines and I look forward to watching more of your content.
Hi Charles, May I ask how you got your guitars to the Philippines? I have a couple that I would love to bring with me when I make the move in about three months.
I would also like to know what process you used to get your guitars to the PI. Have you been to any music store to check what is available such as Fenders or Ibanez and comparative prices as an alternative to shipping?
Just found you on TH-cam Mike. Appreciate your candidness and genuine comments. Wishing you all the very best and in coming up with innovative ways to get on top of boredom and having a happy life.
Thanks for keeping it real and honest. Mark and Paul often paint such a rosy picture that you would assume that there is no adjustment period. Have you been on there channels.
What!!! Been going to the Phils for 30 years. married 3 times bought lots houses and my own beach. never had problem with driving and finding things to do people are nice and like to talk. i had my boat made and dove and and swam fished, jump on myn bike and explore. or party with friends beach parties or some small sand bar. so much to see and do ..enjoy tom
Hey Mike, I often think about the topic of boredom and retiring imagining over time seeing this and that, or listening to a lot of the war stories over and over while sitting around would get old for me. I like to keep myself entertained, I can see myself doing a lot of walking, riding, hitting the gym, cooking, and traveling, as with exploring other more spiritual things while keeping things casual on a local level.
I've been here 7 years and am definitely bored. I am the same age as you. Retirement is a tough transition. But hey I'm a new subscriber. Your attitude is down to earth.
Mike, I just found your TH-cam channel a couple of days ago. Please keep up with the good information your giving out. I wish I was there as your neighbor. I'm looking to retire in about 5 years and my wife is from there. I'm hoping to move there one day. Take care and thanks for your videos.
Hey Mike. I discovered I love snorkeling. I head down the mountain to Dauin and never get bored of discovering New things. Also love carving mahogany nick nacks and learning the language.
Just joined Mike - I am a retiree in Manila 10 years on the PRA program. I like your honesty and practical approach - only suggestion, instead of filming in your room (not so interesting), maybe a more live setting, like seeing you in areas showing the beauty of the Islands, and of course be great seeing you doing a vid with others - maybe you already have, as this is my first view - but either way I like your personal approach. - cheers Peter
I'm in dumagety now as I was looking for apartment,I saw your video on hermogena and I got the motor also, saw some of the mountains will be searching more this week👍
This video connects with me, I'm 50 and have been retired since age 39. It took me a few yrs to figure out what to do with my time. I had to tell myself that I get paid to do my hobbies.
Nice chat and very true..made many trips to Tland so now when I go that initial wonderment has worn off..love the uniform, tshirt, shorts, flip flops and still love sitting on the porch in the morning, cup of coffee in hand listening to the birds, watching the planes coming into Chiang Mai (I worked in aviation) ..but.. like you said, you’re without so many of the props you had at home and it’s no fun watching tv after everyone else has gone to bed…so…good vid, thx 🙏🏻🤓🇹🇭
Just found you today. This is second one I have watched. Finding girlfriend was first. I watch Paul and Filipina Pea often. I like this topic because I think many men do not think about it, yet it is very relevant in my opinion. I want to visit in next 6 or so months. Dumaguete is definitely top of my list. I like what I have seen of the expats and bloggers there. Will watch a few more of your videos and the new ones too. So far I am in total agreement.
Aloha Mike...Interesting video...that word "boring" in my opinion seems used often when reality of the roller coaster of life throws cold water on the unrealistic expectation of a constant high with no lows...Retirement paralysis is something I have experienced where I could just melt away and disappear, sitting in a chair watching life roll on by. I have lived that dream in places like Hawaii, Brazil, Pacific Islands, Caribbean Islands, Australian, etc saying each time this is it, where I want to be!. That initial excitement was incredible, but as you have stated, after a while it subsided...The key to the boredom issue was ME, and my inner expectations/concepts/rose colored glasses. The reality was that each day was a new day and I did not appreciate/enjoy that newness. Now the start of a day is a refreshing shower and I can't wait to experience the unknown curve balls of life. Namaste
My friend, I was retired and had to return to work because the pension went south. I'll admit the first 3-4 weeks took some adjusting. But after that, I got into a regular routine involving reading, going to the gym 4 times a week, riding a bicycle everywhere, and selectively socializing. I've been back to FT work for five years, and it's killing me. I've gained 35 pounds, and I work 9-5 in a thankless job, knowing I have to work another five years to get the pension I need to retire at 70--eighteen years older than when I first retired. Please consider yourself lucky.
Hey Mike. One of the best times I had in the Philippines was renting a motorcycle on the island of Romblon. I loved riding on the dirt roads with little traffic.
Hi Mike, wow now this was a good vlog well done. Up front about your life it's great , and your looking into the camera well done. Keep it up looking forward to more, try a few outdoor videos and try get Janet involved in your vlogs that would be sensational, cheers
@@mikesphilippineretirement yes please get Janet in Vito's and you and her riding your motorcycles. That will be fun and interesting .that's living life having fun together 😀☺️ would like to see you 2 having a laugh together , remember 2heads are better than 1head 🤩❤️👍
Hey Mike. Started watching your videos. Very interesting. Boredom... you have to be kidding...I live in a care-home and never leave the house. I am never bored. Boredom isn't like a head-ache...but it does come from your head (mind). I have a friend in Thailand. We talk and do things together every day. That takes about 2 to 4 hours a day. I notice that you are on Facebook as well. Find a friend or 2 and develop a satisfying friendship with somebody with similar interest. The one I have in Thailand is enough for me. I spend a lot of my time doing research. I like learning different things. Getting involved with someone's project that you might be interested in. Bottom line is that I don't know what boredom is. I will continue to follow your videos. We have some things in common. Say hello to your friend for me. Thanks.
Forced into early retirement due to serious illness 14 years ago, I started learning trumpet which was postponed from 1958 until 2010. Now I am a sought-after player in community orchestras, and I am never bored. Find your passion.
Hi Mike , I'm been here for 2 months in Bohol , when not visiting Resorts . Boredom here , not much conversation in the province. My girlfriend I met on FB ,2 years ago I been with . Visiting Boracay , beautiful island. Panglao 3 times , Anda here in Bohol also. Dumagetti was my choice to live while here for 1st time . But my girlfriend wanted me to try & see if I would like staying in her home in the province. As I go back to the states in mid December. I am finally visiting Dumagetti for 7 days next week w her . Not getting a motorcycle this time was a mistake but my plans are to come back with what I have learned here on this trip to The Philippines & be better prepared to make good choices. Love your insight Jimmy
Enjoy your visit to Dumaguete great idea checking out different places b4 for leave so you can plan the future a little better. Enjoy your life you seem happy
Hi Mike you need to be busy I was in Duma in 2019 I went to a few Arnis classes when I was there.hopefully next year I will be able to rejoin them Mr.Ike is a wonderful master they were a very nice group to interact with take care.
Hi Mike, been in Bohol for 14 years and yes, it is an incredibly boring place. I had a boat built thinking maybe that might be fun. Went out once and then it was destroyed in the typhoon. I've given up. Now when I wake up in the morning, I feel bad that I'm still here. But hey, that's just me.
Thank you for this video. My wife and I are planning on moving back to her home of Timbaou, close to Bacong. That's still 4 year's away. I am worried about being bored. I do plan on gardening, fishing, and raising pigeon's and other bird's. I thoroughly enjoyed this video.
hey Mike thanks for sharing...I am in the Philippines now for the last 3 weeks exploring different locations cebu, lapu, Manila, palawan, dumaguete and bohol to get a feel of where I might want to reside when I retire in 2 years.
One of my most favorite sayings: " No matter where you go; there you are." I moved to the Philippines in 2017, and had to give up several things to make the move. Some of those things were important parts of my life, such as guitars and keyboard. My priority has been to upgrade the house. In the process I sacrificed getting a guitar and/or keyboard. I also am a painter artist, and need to get back in to doing that. It is my responsibility to do those things, and I can't blame anyone or anything else but my self if I get bored.
I'm selling all my guitars and such to move, I played all my life in nickel and dime bands. Shoulder surgery limits me anyway, but I will pick up a good acoustic when I get there. I agree, being "bored" is all about your personality, not just your surroundings.
Mike - first view of your channel, and I appreciated your comments. The topic caught my attention, as it is something I envision happening with me especially were I in a different country without familiar references and choices, and knowing no one there. Your discussion of the topic was straightforward and interesting. Looking forward to viewing your posted videos and those to come.
I'm really surprised that you got bored in bohol. I'm vacationing here in bohol but will go back to negros tomorrow. I have had a wonderful vacation here.
I went back for a long weekend with Janet and had a great time. When I lived in Bohol I was walking the same beach for 6 weeks needed a change. Great place to visit (Panglao)
Hi Mike just came across your channel well done you reached 68 I like your style say it as it is, your right about boredom and loneliness if you're just drifting I'm not too far behind you in age what I find you get a lot of time to think in your 60s what I have found your never bored if you're content in yourself and grateful for all you have and what's happening in your life, try living in the Now the present moment and your never lonely if you're needed
Love your staight, smart advice as always, and got to Makati Saturday late night. Flght to Butuan City and to Camiquin Island and then to Duma by Saturday. If I can buy you lunch let me know as I have 3 days to check it out bfore I transition to cebu for a look see.
Greetings from the west coast of America, Oregon, and I am for three years in a relationship with a woman who moved over here on her own with help from her sister,...she is from Cebu City, has loads of relatives there. Its interesting for her to see your videos and such,...she understands all sorts of things about property ownership, building, ..she owns a home right how still over there.
great tips Mike. someday I like to meet you and your wife. by the way I was in Mindanao Dipolog City last December visiting my parents. your right about get bored after 6 weeks I got bored and ready to go home to America.
Hi Mike - spent four weeks in PH (mainly Dumaguete) in October, visiting the sights, hanging out in Ground Zero and talking to all the TH-camrs. I asked everyone: “what do you spend your time doing?” Nobody gave me a clear answer - it was a little disappointing - it seemed as though most folks’ activities were essentially solitary (lifting weights or walking/hiking) or sedentary (tricking around on their computers) - the perfect recipe for total boredom. Now I have a low threshold for boredom, so my question to myself was, what could I add to the overall scene that might make life more interesting? The conclusion I came to was to start some physical activities such as team sports which would generate some fun, fitness and sociality (recognizing the average age of ex-pats). Maybe some of these activities exist but nobody mentioned them. So, when I eventually move there, probably mid-2023, watch out for PickleBall, etc! 😂 Physical activity - exercising the limbs, breathing deeply, moving around, and mostly having fun - the recipe for a longer life. St. Patrick
I spent more than 25 years of my life practicing various martial arts and I am ready to leave high impact exercise behind me. Now days I am more than happy with just walking or Tai chi.
@@peter.harding Not really - it’s easier than tennis and once you have developed hand-eye coordination (which evidently you have) it is great fun and very social.
Mike, i just found your channel. Absolutely love it. Also, it would be great if you could try to always run the conversions when you share stories, since, being in North America we really don't understand the conversion yet to pesos. Meaning, speak in American dollars. Just a thought. And again, great channel.
This is my first time seeing your content. Have to say with confidence. If you continue being who you are, and honest as you are. You will continue to grow and have a great channel. Do not worry about the numbers. Just be yourself, be honest, show us the things that are great in your life and also talk to us about the not so great things. Maybe not personal stuff of course. Just stuff that may drive you kinda nuts about where you are, have travelled and such. Not being there, a lot of us really want the truth and experience from those who are there. Your video is exactly what TH-cam needs. A dose of reality. Not all the other fluff that some people are putting out there. There are some very good content creators in the Philippines and maybe you should look into maybe meeting up with a couple if you like them. I will not mention them here of course. There are others, a lot like you tho. They tell the truth, are laid back. Love to travel around. Think it would be very cool for you also. Being able to meet others and compare thought, stories and such and maybe put up a video or two about it. Thank you for your honesty. You have gained a sub from me today for sure. Be safe and keep doing what you are doing.
Thank you so much. Yes I would like to meet other youtubers like myself but waiting until I have a little bigger subscrider support base. Thank you again for watching
Again I say blessings to you and Janet. Any place can become boring. I am planning on visiting there in August sometime. I will be seeing my girlfriend for first time. She seems a lot like your wife. She gets nervous when I don’t feel well. She calls or messages me. Reminds me of doctor appointments. Asked if I visited my mom. All the true Filipina. And never ask me for anything. If someone goes there and expects excitement every day, in a short time they will be disappointed. First relax and get your boots settled on the ground. Take a break and get to know your surroundings, maybe make some friends. I believe in taking day trips, short ones. Maybe longer as time passes. If you go alone you have a great opportunity to go home and share things you experience with your loved ones. Maybe some pictures. You are a good man!
Hi mike new subscriber here😊 I currently live in Florida and will be visiting soon to celebrate my grandmother’s 100th birthday next year in March.. I do plan to retire there early and will be buying a land so I can plant some veggies and grow chickens 🐓 so I won’t get bored. I haven’t been there since I was like 12 yrs old I left in 89 and I’m 46 now but I’ve visited about 3 times. So I know a lot has changed over there since I’ve been away for 33 years. I’ve heard of dumaguete and seen other videos about that place. I was born in Samar Leyte but grew up in Tacloban city I guess I will find out more about my own birth land when I get there. I will definitely will be having all sorts of hobby, things to do and places to explore for sure.
Hi Mike, 1st time visitor here with ya! Ive been cruising carousing phil vlogs since late 2019 while planning a solo scuba vacation...pandemic boredom accelerated my discontent with living in usa causing a desire to retire in phil....after 2 years & change watching all the popular daily vlogger/uploaders i realized to my horror, how bored most all the big vloggers would be without their channel as their 'crutch' against boredom...
During the nearly 3 years that I lived in Cebu City with my filipina girlfriend back in 2011-2013, I found a very nice, waterproof, point-and-shoot Olympis camera and had the time of my life with both underwater and above ground Photography. What a fun hobby!
If someone is bored, I automatically assume they need a hobby or two, OR they just need to find something purposeful and meaningful to do! I would be SO sad if I didn't have a creative outlet like something to do with music or video production etc. but for others it might be motorcycle riding like Mike, but the point is, if you find yourself bored, do yourself a favor and start a fun hobby and find something meaningful and purposeful to DO. When you find it, you'll wish you had more free time in the day to spend doing that fun thing! Good luck to all.
Kevin, you hit the nail on the head. I retired in July. Had all my plans to spend two months in the Philippines in September to keep me busy until my trip. Spent an amazing time island hopping with a beautiful lady. Got back home and became bored. So I took all the videos and photos and started video production for a little TH-cam channel.
Get some weights and start working out and get in shape. If I moved there I would keep working out and I'm almost 63. I look better today than I did when I spent 9 months in the Philippines back in 82,83 while in the Seabees.
Yeah I think the same problem occurs in the States. You can be bored and retired anywhere, it’s just a cheaper and more beautiful boredom in the Philippines lol
You have to have hobbies and interests that exist outside of work and those hobbies and interests have to be transferable to wherever you decide to live. Too many expats focus soley on the pursuit of a woman. Did you do that at home? No of course not. So why would you make that your sole reality in the phillipines? Hit the gym, cycle, game, learn the language, join a community, paint, draw, write a novel. Take up martial arts, Tai Chi, whatever... You have to participate and acclimate to wherever you are living or even if you are surrounded by the beauty of nature and people you may still feel isolated.
Yeah Mike...You are the kind of guy that has to always have something to do. That's good and bad. You are staying busy with different things. It is hard when we get retirement age to find something that gives us purpose, and gets us involved in something that is bigger than ourselves. I can only imagine that it must be tougher in a different country and a different culture? Your videos are a blessing. Your old school values, and motivations are a good thing. Having adventures and people to share them with keeps the boredom away doesn't it? It should. You always give good advice in your videos, and thanks for the shout out. THANKS MIKE!! 😊👍
Hi Mike, i’m glad you address this. Tho loved the Philippines when I was there a couple weeks ago that was the one concern about living there. Boredom. I love riding motorcycles so that is one solution. buying a boat and fishing is another option, I enjoy scuba diving as well. of course conducting a TH-cam channel is interesting and helpful to many people but that seems to be for a select few. anyway boredom in retirement is common no matter where you live but in the Philippines there is a variety of options; places and people. But the low cost of living also affords hobbies and projects that may be out of reach elsewhere. Thanks, John
Hello Mike I just watched your video and subscribed and want to tell you yeah I'm 68 years old too and I know you worked all your life like I did taking a day off seems really weird I've been retired now for 9 years bored stiff so I've been chatting everybody over that way and I'm thinking about moving over there myself but I was thinking of Cebu but I've heard so much about Dumaguete and looked it up and one of the best places in the Philippines to live hopefully I'm going to try to make it over there in the spring well I don't know if it'll be spring there but spring here I mean April or May
Dude I really like the videos I met my asawa in Cebu south Delaget mandalusa DibDib mountain girl 👧 ♥ she is a lot like Janet very petite and beautiful with flawless skin brought her back to America and she loves it now I trust her to do all the finances so someday if I'm gone her will know how she drives and has a pretty good J O B I heard city girls are a little lazy and they always want to go shopping 🛍 💖 💕 thank you Mike n Janet
Great video. Great topic. Indeed after awhile there is a sense of boredom. The reality is recreating yourself is key. There is a work involved getting new hobbies and adventuring more. All in what u make it. Thanks I enjoyed the realness of your video.
Salamat Mike…Have you been to Forest Camp yet…and Dauin or Siquijor or Oslob or Tops in Cebu? I was there in July for the third time…finally met my ldr fiancé and cant wait to get back…want to explore more of the PI …then go to SE Asia etc…so i rarely have ever been bored anywhere in my life…i still play tennis several times a week …follow the news and enjoy card and board games…like to read …try my voice at karaoke…keeps tabs on the stock market…gonna buy a cycle and learn to ride all over …go swimming amap…eat new food at restaurants…attend church weekly…visit with friends…study more Visaya and Tagalog…work out in some way every day…watch my sports teams play…go grocery shopping …decorate the house …i cant wait to retire again coz i have so much i want to do with more time to enjoy them…even like watching my favorite vloggers …please keep up the good vids
I was a little bit bored when i went home for two months. My job was to sleep, eat, go swimming, and visit relatives. Its was the longest vacation, after retiring from the military.
During the nearly 3 years that I lived in Cebu City with my filipina girlfriend back in 2011-2013, I found a very nice, waterproof, point-and-shoot Olympis camera in Ayala mall and had the time of my life with both underwater and above ground Photography. What a fun hobby!
That's what I love about your channel Mike you tell the truth we came it's Paradise he got bored you moved you got on a bike you learned with Janet had to write it you got your freedom you had a beautiful house girlfriend money and things to do and I'm glad you touched on the drinking because if you take a honest video or do my Getty you'll see the same faces in the same chairs every single morning but they don't have a coffee in front of them they got a bottle and power to them if that's what they want power too thanks again looking forward to your next one.!!!
He hit on a great subject. And as far as being a blogger it's nice to see different faces doing videos. Some of the other ones seem to get in a Groove and they get real popular they get a little bit arrogant. So that's my only advice stay humble enjoy your popularity if you become popular. I did all the things you talked about I end up getting a girlfriend travel around on my scooter bought me a little small van inexpensive. So I can go for drives. I bought some tools some drills vice and I make jewelry out of coral and shells that I find I snorkel a lot I walk a lot I like to go have coffee at why not I mix it up so I don't get bored but I also like to relax. And as far as going to the bar and sitting there drinking I went to a couple of places and I knew it was not for me. I was not going to sit in a bar and drink all day. I'm like you I don't mind having a few beers but that's it.
I think that you raise pertinent issues of retirement in general regardless of where you are, but moving to a different area can potentially be isolating. I’ve heard it said that ‘you can’t retire to prune roses’, but I’m not yet sure what the solution strategies actually are and I guess it may vary for each person? Thanks for posting the vid.
Hello Mike, love your channel Good Sir. I really value your perspective on the various topics especially your honest and direct approach. Looking forward to making the move to the Philippines at the end of 2023. I too share your interest of riding and traveling throughout the country. God willing can’t wait to make the move. Much Peace & Respect Always!✌🏽
Hi Mike, I enjoyed this video. You have some good ideas and you left me with something to think about. To your question, yes I would enjoy videos of some more of the personal side about you and about Janet too. I have enjoyed the general tone and subject matter of your videos so far. You have a good no-nonsense approach in your vids
They are lots of hobbies possible, i am a Amateur radio operator, great for take contact to operators in the Phillipines in club stations and on air, or playing guitar on the beach with other people, freswater fishing, snorkeling, diving, natural photography, they are so important to find some activities in the retirement, and the live are never bored.
You're doing fine Mike. You're definitely an inspiration to me , because you made moves that I have been dreaming of makijgnfor years. And most importantly you have been sharing your experience as you go through with them. I love your transparency and your efforts bro. I hope things continue to work out for the best for you and Janet, because you deserve each other. Here's a bit of advice as far as your channel direction for the future goes if you decide to do it. Maybe you can do something like that dude Larry PH Walking. Where you take the camera and explore the area and the people. He basically goes to the places that most people living abroad never see. He just walks with the camera. Maybe you can add talking with interesting people that are the ones that make the Philippines unique. If you decide to do that, just be careful how you manuver my brother ! Good luck💪
A tour of the libraries and universities would be cool. Can you get English written books in the libraries? Are you allowed to volunteer in the Philippines?
How you doing my friend you look like having a good time remember if you had on straight to find something to do like you said you could get it done really good have a great day
Hi, my name is sam and I’m gonna be relocating to the Philippines shortly, I lived in Rural l Thailand but I was teaching, so that definitely kept me occupied, boredom is one of my fears when I arrive. I do have some hobbies, but I think what I really would like to do is continue teaching English on a volunteer basis in the local community. I feel it’ll be a good way to integrate into the community and build a relationship. Davao will be my starting point simply because it’s urbanized transport in the beginning will be easy. And I forgot to add this motorbike will probably be my first purchase that definitely changed my life in Thailand. I would love to talk to you at some point today is April 19 I believe Have a great day
I totally agree about having hobbies and something to spend your time doing that you enjoy. I also plan on retiring to SE Asia, getting a motorcycle (I've been riding since I was a kid) and riding around the country with friends, going to the gym, photography, scuba diving. Congratulations on your journey and thanks for sharing 👍
Hi Mike, new subscriber to your channel. I have been to PI numerous times since 2018 and hope to retire there in the not-too-distant future (4.5 years or sooner). I like your videos and encourage you to keep them coming. Nice, straightforward approach to interesting topics thus far. I'm heading over again this December to visit my girl and head over to El Nido for some diving and island hopping. To fight boredom and monotony in retirement I plan to write that elusive novel, tour the country on a motorcycle, dive in their beautiful waters and who knows what all? Best of luck my new friend. I'll be looking for other videos (only have seen two of yours thus far). Kraig from Alaska
If you don't have the money to do anything in the Philippines then you are gonna get bored. But a good routine always help. If you have the money there are a bunch of islands to visit and there is Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Austrailia etc. You are close to alot od SE Asia countries.
Thanks for the video Mike. Have a great retirement there in the Philippines. I plan on coming there in about 6 months. I'm bored here in Orlando, Florida..but I suppose one could be bored anywhere. So you're spot on.. good to have something you like doing to keep yourself busy. Happy Holidays to you and yours.
Hey Mike, I am a subscriber and really enjoy your videos! You seem like a a very nice humble man like myself. You are lucky to be where you are and happy, I'm sure you deserve it! Keep up with your great videos! My friends from Dazel TV will be in Dumaguete tomorrow, maybe you should meet them very nice sweet people with a utube channel.
Great vid, Mike, I got into a rut drinking at night, my only hobby is I love NBA basketball. HBO is only good every blue moon, I'm a retired computer programmer before I decided to move to the Philippines, I want to learn Web design HTML etc. but got lazy, it's just not the same getting paid to do IT, anyway, glad you brought the subject up think most people won't admit. Their boredom I'll try other. things. Thanks
So many come to the Philippines thinking about the cost savings of being here but don't think about what you will do for entertaining yourself, especially when you get older and can't do those scuba dives or hiking anymore. You need to find other interests and keep active. Some try gardening or vlogging but everyone's prospective on what makes them feel worthwhile is different and need to find what makes you happy. After all, you don't come here to be unhappy, right?
Hey Mike, I’m flying into Dumaguete in like a week or so, I’d love to get together and play some cards. Another thing I really enjoy is shooting pool, some ppl call it billiards
That’s sounds a lot like me to be honest. I’m easily bored, but I never get tired of visiting new places and seeing new things. The motor bike or scooter would be my salvation from boredom there. There are so many islands, provinces and cities for me to still visit and discover. Nice video as always, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Hello Mike. I enjoyed the sit-down conversation. There is the old saying " If you are bored it is because you are Boring." Something to that effect. If you are getting bored, do something. It is supposed to be easy to make friends there. The benefits as I see it of living there is we have more financial options and romantic options. That should help alleviate the boredom if you want to do something. You can find a companion and friends more readily there and hopefully your funds will go farther making it easier to enjoy a few more simple things in life. I enjoy sitting home watching a good movie. It will be better with a heartfelt companion/girlfriend. I am looking forward to getting a new motorbike and exploring the islands as money, energy and weather allows. I hope to find a group of couples that like to do the same from time to time. I had that a few years ago with my biker friends and miss it now. If you are traveling halfway around the world, live a little.
Start fishing my friend, with all the fish swimming around all those islands, you'll never be bored again. Plus you can drink San Miguel beer while you're doing it.
Right on mike you're doing just fine you can be retired stateside and be bored. I live in davao and waiting on my harley to be sent to the philippines my fiance grace is very excited i'm retired as well you stay safe Steve and grace 🤙🏻
I like your direct honest , straight forward style Mike. 2nd video of yours I've seen & this video was as good as the 1st ! Thank you for vlogging from the Philippines. Learning about your life over there has helped me get a good idea what it would be like there for me. Are the streets as filled with traffic where you are ?
Hey Mike Enjoyed this Video. You explain and express yourself very well.. It's NORMAL at times to feel bored. My thoughts, Part of Life at all ages. My happiness, to stay healthy and live a Quiet and Peaceful life.. -One Day At a Time.... Is best.
Glad to hear and thanks for watching
I'm 68 and feel 40 so you got me beat. Hahaha Thanks for sharing
Thanks.

Thank you John
@@mikesphilippineretirement what vaccines/jabs are required for the Philippines? I’m from the uk.
none that I know of
My Filipina wife of 10 years and I came here to Cavite from the US 6 months ago. In the Philippines and I look forward to watching more of your content.
thanks for sharing
Hi Charles, May I ask how you got your guitars to the Philippines? I have a couple that I would love to bring with me when I make the move in about three months.
I would also like to know what process you used to get your guitars to the PI. Have you been to any music store to check what is available such as Fenders or Ibanez and comparative prices as an alternative to shipping?
Just found you on TH-cam Mike. Appreciate your candidness and genuine comments. Wishing you all the very best and in coming up with innovative ways to get on top of boredom and having a happy life.
Welcome aboard!
Thanks for keeping it real and honest. Mark and Paul often paint such a rosy picture that you would assume that there is no adjustment period. Have you been on there channels.
never watched Mark Paul I like and Bud Brown also Steve on Philippine info channel. No I have not been on anyones channel yet , never been invited
That is awesome!
Been here 6 weeks and so bored.
All are good things to do to keep you thinking and feeling young
I've been here 7 years and am definitely bored. I am the same age as you. Retirement is a tough transition. But hey I'm a new subscriber. Your attitude is down to earth.
Thanks for sharing!
Mike, I just found your TH-cam channel a couple of days ago. Please keep up with the good information your giving out. I wish I was there as your neighbor. I'm looking to retire in about 5 years and my wife is from there. I'm hoping to move there one day. Take care and thanks for your videos.
thanks for watching
Hey Mike.
I discovered I love snorkeling. I head down the mountain to Dauin and never get bored of discovering New things.
Also love carving mahogany nick nacks and learning the language.
Thinking about taking up snorkeling
Just joined Mike - I am a retiree in Manila 10 years on the PRA program. I like your honesty and practical approach - only suggestion, instead of filming in your room (not so interesting), maybe a more live setting, like seeing you in areas showing the beauty of the Islands, and of course be great seeing you doing a vid with others - maybe you already have, as this is my first view - but either way I like your personal approach. - cheers Peter
Welcome aboard! not many outside yet hard to get away from the dogs and chickens. But that is good advice
I'm in dumagety now as I was looking for apartment,I saw your video on hermogena and I got the motor also, saw some of the mountains will be searching more this week👍
Very cool! What are you looking for
This video connects with me, I'm 50 and have been retired since age 39. It took me a few yrs to figure out what to do with my time. I had to tell myself that I get paid to do my hobbies.
Good way to look at it. You earned what you received. Enjoy your retirement
What hobbies? Been here 6 weeks, work part time, workout, and bored 12 hrs a day.
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm coming for a holiday in January..first time ever ..thankyou for your advice .I hope your channel is a great sucess
Happy holidays!
Wow, thank you
Aloha Mike...Interesting video...that word "boring" in my opinion seems used often when reality of the roller coaster of life throws cold water on the unrealistic expectation of a constant high with no lows...Retirement paralysis is something I have experienced where I could just melt away and disappear, sitting in a chair watching life roll on by. Namaste
Yingyang thank you for shaing
My friend, I was retired and had to return to work because the pension went south. I'll admit the first 3-4 weeks took some adjusting. But after that, I got into a regular routine involving reading, going to the gym 4 times a week, riding a bicycle everywhere, and selectively socializing. I've been back to FT work for five years, and it's killing me. I've gained 35 pounds, and I work 9-5 in a thankless job, knowing I have to work another five years to get the pension I need to retire at 70--eighteen years older than when I first retired. Please consider yourself lucky.
Burton I"m very blessed
Hey Mike. One of the best times I had in the Philippines was renting a motorcycle on the island of Romblon. I loved riding on the dirt roads with little traffic.
Very cool! thanks for sharing
What I do for boredom in the US is read books. I have stacks of em in a spare bedroom. I'd have to bring a ton of books there.
Hi Mike, wow now this was a good vlog well done. Up front about your life it's great , and your looking into the camera well done. Keep it up looking forward to more, try a few outdoor videos and try get Janet involved in your vlogs that would be sensational, cheers
Will do. Thank you for your comment so nice of you
@@mikesphilippineretirement yes please get Janet in Vito's and you and her riding your motorcycles.

Thanks Chuck happy you found your passion
Great! Great! Great comments about the reality of boredom. Very helpful!
thank you glad you liked it
Hi Mike , I'm been here for 2 months in Bohol , when not visiting Resorts .
Hope to meet you when i get here
Same same
Hi Mike, been in Bohol for 14 years and yes, it is an incredibly boring place.

Thanks for sharing Tom
Glad to know that riding a motorcycle is a great way to avoid being bored.
I enjoy riding clears the head and the mountains are beautiful
hey Mike thanks for sharing...I am in the Philippines now for the last 3 weeks exploring different locations cebu, lapu, Manila, palawan, dumaguete and bohol to get a feel of where I might want to reside when I retire in 2 years.
Best of luck! Checking it out in person is the best way to decide
One of my most favorite sayings: " No matter where you go; there you are."
I moved to the Philippines in 2017, and had to give up several things to make the move.
Thanks for sharing Walter
@@mikesphilippineretirement My pleasure Mike. Greetings from Anilao Iloilo.
Welcome aboard!
Thanks for all you do, Mike! I'm sure enjoying your thirty day budget challenge. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much!
You are authentic and I can relate with that boredom story. Keep up the great work with sharing the Philippines experience.
Thank you! Will do!
Great video. You're a very thoughtful person Mike,a good guy!!!! Thanks
Thank you kindly
First viewing for me. Enjoyed your conversation, Mike. You are telling it like it is. Cheers.
Much appreciated
Hi Mike just came across your channel well done you reached 68 I like your style say it as it is, your right about boredom and loneliness if you're just drifting I'm not too far behind you in age what I find you get a lot of time to think in your 60s what I have found your never bored if you're content in yourself and grateful for all you have and what's happening in your life, try living in the Now the present moment and your never lonely if you're needed
thank you
Love your staight, smart advice as always, and got to Makati Saturday late night.

Thanks for sharing!
great tips Mike. someday I like to meet you and your wife. by the way I was in Mindanao Dipolog City last December visiting my parents. your right about get bored after 6 weeks I got bored and ready to go home to America.
sorry we missed you..next time come visit us
Hi Mike - spent four weeks in PH (mainly Dumaguete) in October, visiting the sights, hanging out in Ground Zero and talking to all the TH-camrs. St. Patrick
great advice. See you when you get here
I spent more than 25 years of my life practicing various martial arts and I am ready to leave high impact exercise behind me. Now days I am more than happy with just walking or Tai chi.
@@peter.harding You are obviously fit - ever played pickleball?
@@murfeusa1 I have played tennis but never pickleball it looks like it would require quite an adjustment.
Great suggestion! Thanks for watching
You are a good man!
well said and thanks for sharing
I will definitely will be having all sorts of hobby, things to do and places to explore for sure.
thank you for sharing, also thanks for your support
Hi Mike, 1st time visitor here with ya!
Ive been cruising carousing phil vlogs since late 2019 while planning a solo scuba vacation...pandemic boredom accelerated my discontent with living in usa causing a desire to retire in phil....after 2 years & change watching all the popular daily vlogger/uploaders i realized to my horror, how bored most all the big vloggers would be without their channel as their 'crutch' against boredom...
Yes it keeps me busy and I get to make a few new friends
hey Steve I'm taking up scuba diving lessons, my first time, in Dauin Negros in February , maybe our paths will meet
Thanks for sharing Kevin
😊👍
Your Welcome and thanks for the kind words
Exactly Billy.
Keep your Style Mike.
Thank for your Servive.
Those thinking of retiring in the east remember Doing nothing is very hard work better to visit places than living there. The gloss will rub off.
Love your channel. I look forward to learning more from you. I'm two years out.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks, John
you can find many things to do..find something you like and enjoy your life
Hello Mike I just watched your video and subscribed and want to tell you yeah I'm 68 years old too and I know you worked all your life like I did taking a day off seems really weird I've been retired now for 9 years bored stiff so I've been chatting everybody over that way and I'm thinking about moving over there myself but I was thinking of Cebu but I've heard so much about Dumaguete and looked it up and one of the best places in the Philippines to live hopefully I'm going to try to make it over there in the spring well I don't know if it'll be spring there but spring here I mean April or May

I know exactly what you are talking about, Iam nowadays staying in philippines 6 months and 6 months in state, but u exactly right about boredom
Thanks for sharing Kenny
Thanks for sharing Mike
You are real. I'd like to meet you and Janet when I come to visit Dumaguete in May (2023)
add me on fb and keep me posted
I think that you raise pertinent issues of retirement in general regardless of where you are, but moving to a different area can potentially be isolating.
I’ve heard it said that ‘you can’t retire to prune roses’, but I’m not yet sure what the solution strategies actually are and I guess it may vary for each person?
Thanks for posting the vid.
Your welcome Steve
Hello Mike, love your channel Good Sir. I really value your perspective on the various topics especially your honest and direct approach. Looking forward to making the move to the Philippines at the end of 2023. I too share your interest of riding and traveling throughout the country. God willing can’t wait to make the move. Much Peace & Respect Always!✌🏽
Thank you for your comment. I hope you keep watching. Take Care Always
Thank you so much Mike
They are lots of hobbies possible, i am a Amateur radio operator, great for take contact to operators in the Phillipines in club stations and on air, or playing guitar on the beach with other people, freswater fishing, snorkeling, diving, natural photography, they are so important to find some activities in the retirement, and the live are never bored.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you Mike for sharing 🙏
Very welcome
Good luck💪
I understand. It is something to do later after i get viewers. Thank you for you advice. I welcome any advice and thanks for watching
Mike, an important topic to talk about, I'm glad you did. (It's probably the main reason I won't be retiring for a while. I'm the same age as you.)
I 'm like you. I worked until the week b4 I came to the Philippines
A tour of the libraries and universities would be cool. Can you get English written books in the libraries? Are you allowed to volunteer in the Philippines?
How you doing my friend you look like having a good time remember if you had on straight to find something to do like you said you could get it done really good have a great day
thanks Douglas
I know very few people who never smile. You are one of them!

I would love to talk to you at some point today is April 19 I believe Have a great day
Hi Sam welcome to the Philippines
I totally agree about having hobbies and something to spend your time doing that you enjoy.
I also plan on retiring to SE Asia, getting a motorcycle (I've been riding since I was a kid) and riding around the country with friends, going to the gym, photography, scuba diving. Congratulations on your journey and thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks John sounds like you have a good plan
Hi Kraig thanks for your support. I will start do much ore traveling after the rainy season is over
If you don't have the money to do anything in the Philippines then you are gonna get bored. But a good routine always help. If you have the money there are a bunch of islands to visit and there is Malaysia, Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Austrailia etc. You are close to alot od SE Asia countries.
traveling and planning trips, great way to stay busy and enjoy your life here
Thanks for the video Mike.
Happy Holidays to you
Hey Mike, I am a subscriber and really enjoy your videos! You seem like a a very nice humble man like myself. You are lucky to be where you are and happy, I'm sure you deserve it! Keep up with your great videos! My friends from Dazel TV will be in Dumaguete tomorrow, maybe you should meet them very nice sweet people with a utube channel.
How do i meet them or contact them. This is my fb link facebook.com/profile.php?id=100079610481824
Please have them contact me.
Their boredom I'll try other. things. Thanks
thanks for sharing my friend
So many come to the Philippines thinking about the cost savings of being here but don't think about what you will do for entertaining yourself, especially when you get older and can't do those scuba dives or hiking anymore. You need to find other interests and keep active. Some try gardening or vlogging but everyone's prospective on what makes them feel worthwhile is different and need to find what makes you happy. After all, you don't come here to be unhappy, right?
you right I did not come here to be unhappy
Hey Mike, I’m flying into Dumaguete in like a week or so, I’d love to get together and play some cards.
Another thing I really enjoy is shooting pool, some ppl call it billiards
That’s sounds a lot like me to be honest. I’m easily bored, but I never get tired of visiting new places and seeing new things. The motor bike or scooter would be my salvation from boredom there. There are so many islands, provinces and cities for me to still visit and discover. Nice video as always, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
your welcome
Mike, Keep up the good work. I enjoy your channel. Take care - David
Thanks 👍
Good video Mike, Thank you!
Thanks for sharing Doug
Start fishing my friend, with all the fish swimming around all those islands, you'll never be bored again. Plus you can drink San Miguel beer while you're doing it.
Hahaha Bill
Right on mike you're doing just fine you can be retired stateside and be bored. I live in davao and waiting on my harley to be sent to the philippines my fiance grace is very excited i'm retired as well you stay safe Steve and grace 🤙🏻
I have an N Max 155 cc scooter motorbike Do not think i can handle a big bike but i see many big bikes taking much longer trips. Enjoy you retirement

I like your direct honest , straight forward style Mike. 2nd video of yours I've seen & this video was as good as the 1st ! Thank you for vlogging from the Philippines. Learning about your life over there has helped me get a good idea what it would be like there for me. Are the streets as filled with traffic where you are ?
only downtown in Dumaguete. We ride a lot in the mountains and no traffic
Hey pretty good subject. I'm moving there May 31. That has been one of my concerns. Good information I appreciate it.
enjoy you trip ti the Philippines
Hey Mike
Enjoyed this Video. You explain and express yourself very well..
It's NORMAL at times to feel bored. My thoughts, Part of Life at all ages. My happiness, to stay healthy and live a Quiet and Peaceful life..
-One Day At a Time.... Is best.
