- This video game music combines feelings which are solemn and tragic but also powerful and heroic. So what better vehicle is there for a solo instrumental cover than a real, living, breathing, bad-ass pipe organ?!
The melody first appears as a solo played by just the feet on the thunderous Pedal Ophicleide stop. It then goes through a few different sounds of the organ before climaxing on Full Organ (you'll know when that happens!). Finally, the music collapses down to a still-threatening whisper.
I love the way this music creates an immediate, really vivid mood. If you've enjoyed this video, then do check out more from NieR (Shadowlord's Castle, Song of the Ancients and Ashes of Dreams) in my playlist of Video Game Music.
Played by Paul Broadhurst on the historic Willis organ of Christ Church, Birkenhead, UK.
Recorded 28 September 2022
Everything about this game is a masterpiece
i feel chills when you play this song on your organ
Hope that's a good thing! I feel chills playing that organ at the moment because the church is freezing cold. 🥶
I lost myself transition part after 1:34, I'm so fascinated with the majestic arrangement of whole registers. It is so honor to hear your amazing organ work !
Many, many thanks for your comment. I listened to your version soon after I uploaded mine, and I was completely blown away! So it's an honour to have you listen to my version. It's great that music such as this lends itself to such different interpretations and performances. Very best wishes to you from the political rollercoaster which is currently the UK.
1:34 "It's You... Isn't it?", this moment coupled with the timing is the reason I *never* skip the Shadowlord cutscenes on repeated playthroughs for the endings :D
Yes, I like to scoop up all the details. 😎
@@PaulTheOrganist One of the comments mentioned the Replicant remaster for the PS4. If there's one videogame worth buying a console and game for, it's this one! (On top of all the other gaming masterpieces, of course. Just stay away from the lootbox-heavy stuff!)
Hi, friend! I found this video over a year after you posted it, and I can confirm to you that this was the BEST cover I've ever heard of this music... cheers from your brazilian friend.
Wow, thank you! This music and that organ just sort of clicked. And it's great to know that I have a friend in sunny Brazil!! 😎
WOW!! That sounds very authentic, with changing moods. Perfect program music!
Hello Dietmar. Glad you liked it, and to the extent of a "WOW"! I'm well chuffed. 🤩 The huge Pedal 16' reed (coupled through to the Great 16' Trombone) makes for a striking start on this organ.
A Beautiful masterpiece and the best version i have heard.
Hi Abel. Many thanks for commenting. Really glad you liked it!
@@PaulTheOrganist I love this composition, and you made a perfect job is divine and sad at same time. Greetings from Brazil.
Wonderful to know my video has travelled so far as Brazil! As I sit here looking at the rain I was thinking you'll be basking in sunshine over there, but then I checked the internet and you're not much better than us today after all!
@@PaulTheOrganist hahaha, I supose you specting i live in Rio de Janeiro but i live in Manaus- Amazonas, is very hot in here. Sorry for the mistakes in English.

Thank you for a beautiful cover of this piece, for some reason this song is in my mind all the time like it's haunting me, ironically i am getting a piano soon so I'm gonna have to learn this song as soon as I get my hands on a piano 🎹
This is a great thing to play, so get cracking on that piano! Yes, this is a really haunting piece of music and it works particularly well, I think, on the pipe organ. Thank you for dropping me a line - it's really encouraging to receive feedback. And I think you should win some sort of prize for your thumbnail!
this cover literally gave me goosebumps, it's so beautiful!!

So do drop me a line if you think of anything - that's how I ended up arranging and recording some of the video game music, plus other stuff I wouldn't have come across otherwise. Cheers, Paul.

Many thanks for the comment. Epic music on an epic organ, so it's a dream team! 😎
This is beautiful, i wish i could listen you play this Live in the Church. I hope you recover soon 🙏🏼
HI! Many thanks for your message and good wishes. If you ever find you way to Christ Church (which I dare say is very many miles) then I'll be happy to play it Live for you!
Must be nice to play a building. I'd play the first notes of Toccata and Fugue in D minor like my life depended on it. Have you ever been to the great organs of Europe like the Berlin Cathedral? I've heard the presence of the organ is otherwordly. Imagine those opening notes.. Just takes you out of your body, and on to a journey. Xaver Varnus played the Toccata fantastically in the Berliner Dom a few years back. Though the video does no justice to those opening bars, I imagine theyre like harpoons shot one by one into your very being.
Though my favorite interpretation is by Gert van Hoef, he just absolutely nails it. Xaver has a touch of romanticism in him that probably wasnt present during Bach's era. Gert is different.
You're right, an organist is playing the building as well as the instrument itself. It was fun playing Liverpool Cathedral with its 10 seconds of echo, as you can see in my video of The Final Countdown from there. That's one of the biggest buildings in the world. If you're playing a fast piece in that huge space, you have to put a little gap in the music every so often to let the echo sort itself out, and then you can carry on!
Very well done! The change of registers are fantastic and tasteful! I would you mind sharing the specific stops you used? I can definitely learn quite a bit from you :)
Also just wondering whether you played the remastered Nier yet! :D
And wondering about your life trajectory in terms of music! How did start playing the organ and how long have you been playing? I noticed in many of your other pieces you have very good pedal techniques!
Hi! Many thanks for your very kind comments. This organ is a particularly good one, so I have many beautiful sounds to choose from. The main stops I used for this piece are:
0:00 (Pedal solo) - All the pedal stops! The main sound you hear is the big 16-foot reed stop, the Ophicleide, coupled with the 16-foot Trombone from the Great
0:33 - Right hand (Great) Trombone with Diapasons 8 (all three of them) and Principal 4 / Left hand (Swell) Full, with box closed
1:05 - (Great) Flute 8, quiet Diapason 8
1:34 - (Great) Diapasons 8 (Numbers 2 and 3), Principal 4
2:08 - (Great) Diapason 8, Principal 4, Fifteenth 2, Mixture
2:25 - (Swell) Full
2:33 - (Great) Full including Trumpet 8 and Clarion 4
2:50 - (Great) Flute 8, quiet Diapason 8
3:09 - (Swell) Diapason 8, Principal 4, Mixture, Oboe 8
I've listened to a few of your Nier tracks and have loved them all! Which is the remastered one you've mentioned?
It's been interesting for me to reflect on this, so thank you for asking. The family piano got chopped up when I was 5, so that wasn't a promising start! I started the organ from scratch when I was around 10, after being given a little electronic organ for Christmas. I was very enthusiastic and taught myself for a while. When I was 16 I was very fortunate to start having lessons with the great Noel Rawsthorne who was the organist at Liverpool Cathedral, near where I live. His wonderful musicianship set me on track and has inspired me for the rest of my life. The next big thing was being appointed organist at Christ Church 26 years ago. This very special organ has been like a teacher to me, because I'm always trying to raise my game to the level of this fantastic instrument. And the final big thing that happened was giving up full-time work in 2017. That gave me the time and focus to start arranging music - I have to write it down, as I don't have your wonderful improvisation skills! So these past 5 years have been a really productive and enjoyable period in my life. That's me in a nutshell. How about you? Where did your amazing improvisation skill come from? And where in the world are you?
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhholy shit. As if the original Shadowlord wasn't powerful enough...
Aha, the pipe organ brings an extra frisson to this fantastic music. Thanks for commenting!
