I love to analyze literature, so I thought that I'd share my analysis of this song for the hell of it. "Stalker's my whole style And if I get caught, I'll Deny, deny, deny" Obviously, he's stalking someone. If he's caught he'll deny it 3 times, referencing how Peter denied knowing Christ 3 times. "Today you're twenty-five I made you something fine It's in the palm of my new hand It's out" He's holding his hand out as if panhandling for money or showing a stigmata. The number 25 symbolizes in the Bible "grace upon grace." The person he is stalking is a constant, overflowing gift. "You're mostly what I think about and I'm proud" This part is interesting to me. The person he's stalking is "mostly" what he thinks about, but not "all". I think that this shows that his current stalking is just what the narrator feels is the tip of the iceberg of what he is capable of. He could go deeper and become more sinister with his plans, perhaps harming the person. "I've been coasting on this singles route But I still hear your name In wedding bells, will I look better or will I look the same? Rotting in hell" Obviously, he's delusional and sees a future romantic relationship. The line "rotting in hell" may refer to how he feels in his current situation, but I feel that this is also showing that he is considering and willing to develop more sinister intentions. "You're the only proper noun I need, hurry My copper crown's gone green Pull me Pull me on out of this tree, I'm stuck up a branch waiting Clearly caught between two things unclear to me" There's a sense of urgency, since he has been stalking his prey for so long. He may be only figuratively caught between branches before he reaches the point of no return. He may also be literally hiding in a tree watching. In the line "My copper crown's gone green," this is how copper ages when it gets older, but he's also showing us that he thinks of himself as being almost like a king with wearing a crown. He also believes himself to be above others and perhaps that he feels he can "play God," so to speak. Green is also the color of jealousy. "Are you a female young messiah? For stow aways and dugouts And are you, what church folk mean by the good news Pulling plastic bags off heads" He sees the person that he is stalking as above everyone else, like a religious idol or perhaps a future martyr to his cause. The "Pulling plastic bags off heads" line is referencing the Heaven's Gate cult, who commited mass suicide in this manner. This may be referring to his cult-like following to the person he's stalking, but could also show suicidal or sinister intentions. The person that he is stalking is the only one who can pull the "plastic bag" off of his head and save him from himself (and possibly themselves from him as well). "Or are you giving me a dirty look in the rearview Clicking the button on your U-Haul pen Don't pretend you didn't see me coming 'round the bend On my fixie with the chopped horns turned in Trailing behind your biodiesel Benz" The narrator is following the narrator on his expensive bike. The bike is a fixie, which does not have brakes, much like he has not used the "brakes" figuratively on this imaginary relationship. The person that he is stalking has a "U-Haul pen" showing that they have perhaps tried to move before, but he has found them once again. They are recording the times that they have seen their stalker for legal purposes. The fact that the person that he is stalking has a Benz, shows that they may be from a wealthy/upper class family and have a seemingly perfect life. The narrator notices that the car uses "biodiesel", considered more environmentally friendly to some, and maybe think that this is a similar interest (since he is also using an environmentally friendly option with his bike) and adds this detail to justify how they are a perfect match for each other. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
