- In August 2015, Drake went aboard the Faroese fishing vessel Liraberg to film a documentary about their voyage. They sailed for 7 days, as far 160 nautical miles from the coast, and caught over 6000 lbs of fish, including many halibuts weighing as much as 250 lbs each.
This is an extended trailer of that upcoming film.

I keep saying a $10,000 camera is not needed to put out professional looking productions. Drake, your stuff is really hitting the upper mark as far as color, focus and saturation goes. Production speaking that is. It is nice to see someone put out something as good as any network, with just his personal consumer and prosumer gear. I would also like to say that I started reading your blog. The writing is very good and captivating. It opens up to your viewers experiences that are not on the channel here.
The video camera is not always on hand when something happens and because I watch your videos, the writing pulls me in and in my minds eye, I can see the experience the writing is conveying. If anyone is looking for a way to keep up on what is going on with your adventures, I highly recommend the Blog.
Also, those flounder were HUGE!

@ John L - HA! I never thought of that. :) I went out in the survival suit so that I could get some footage of the boat from off of the boat, and also to get those underwater shots. It was an incredible experience to be peacefully floating around and looking up at the sky while 150 nautical miles away from the nearest land.

+Doctor Rag3 We are in Faroe right now and preparing to sail back to Scotland to spend this winter. In the Spring we plan to sail back to Faroe and then directly to Lofoten, Norway and on to Svalbard. We definitely are thinking of spending some years in Norway/Sweden/Denmark/Germany after that.
+razzorbladz Those actually aren't seagulls. It was explained to me that they would never eat seagulls because seagulls eat trash from ashore, and also other land animals. These birds are fulmars and they live at sea and eat only fish. They were delicious, and very easy to catch and prepare. Definitely a new addition to our recipe book.

+Sailing Nervous Thank you so much Sailing Nervous! Yes, we are flying a DJI Phantom 3 drone - the technology is advancing incredibly fast. They are so much easier to fly and cost much less than they used to when we were flying over the icebergs in Greenland.
DJI Phantom 3 -- will look it up -- funds are super tight - if you're like me...I could find so many things to spend money on to enhance our serving the sailing community via our videos...we are saving all the cash now for the down payment on the boat...am hoping to find a good 'end-of-season' deal in the Chesapeake Bay area!
+Sailing Nervous You will be able to find a "drone" a lot cheaper than the DJI Phantom. The RC (radio control ) community of model ariplanes, helicopters drones etc.. has been exploding with all the new computer and lithium battery technology. Off the top of my head I can think of 3 or 4 experts that probably would be more than happy to help you out and on a shoe string budget. Just like sailing the RC community is full of people giving back to the community. Let me know if I can be of assistence to you. Fair winds.

Depends on your market for this documentary but the public(Americans) might not see the value in plucking baby birds from the sea to break their necks and eat. I understand the history of the fulmer and their need to survive so far north but just from the comments you see below the misconception that they're gulls which Americans think of as being the cute little bird they see and mistakenly feed on vacation it might taint what could possibly be a popular film for you providing the whole fish processing doesn't get them as well. Look forward to watching it though if it makes it to U.S. markets or at least online maybe. Good luck. Amazing shots.

Hi Rick, I'm curious which video has me saying that I never take fish from the sea. I do love to catch fish for food, as seen in the video below where I catch a large tuna. If I don't catch many fish I'm afraid it's due to my proficiency as a fisherman (or lack thereof) rather than a moral objection to fishing.
As for your assertion that Americans do not know, or prefer not to know, where their food come from...well, you might be correct. I'm sure most people know that those packages of meat in the grocery store come from animals, but seeing or physically catching an animal and killing it for consumption is something many modern day people never experience.
However, part of what we are striving to do with our channel, besides telling a good story, is to open up the world to our viewers as we share our experiences while cruising. Exposure to new places, people, and the cultures they live in are all a part of the story.
Perhaps you're right and some people will have an adverse reaction at first...who doesn't secretly root for the antelope being chased by the cheetah? But living off of the land and the sea is a very real human experience and one we want to share.
I think that people will not only be able to handle seeing these images, but will ultimately appreciate them. I hope they will enjoy seeing a different side to the world we all share.

How did this fishing vessels hull and rake fare to your Westsails 42 as far as ride and pitch/roll etc.
+just_a Oldman It was a totally different motion! It felt like the worst turbulence I've ever experience on an airplane times 50. I very rarely ever get seasick when we're voyaging on Paragon, but on Liraberg I got horribly seasick and threw up 5 times in the first 2 days before I finally got used to it thank goodness.

What a fascinating experience for you! For me, it was really difficult to watch (despite your fabulous camera work). I do eat fish, and this is the reality of how that fish makes it to my plate, so I'm feeling like maybe it's time to go back to vegetarianism. How was that aspect of it for you? Are you used to fishing and hunting?
+Kazooka Hi Kazooka, Honestly, it's always difficult for me to see any type of animal slaughtered. However I do eat meat and fish and accept that, if it is for consumption and if it is done as humanely as possible, then it is a part of the natural order of life on earth. The one thing that definitely gives me pause is knowing how some animals live in such atrocious conditions, being mass produced in factories as if they weren't living beings, then slaughtered in cruel ways...and all behind closed doors to mask these conditions. Those situations are simply too horrific for me to condone. Knowing that these fish and birds that we caught aboard Liraberg were from their natural environment, I feel, is deserving of respect. Until the moment they died these animals lived a good life, and that is something I can stand behind.

Thanks, I hope someday soon we will be able edit all of our footage of that trip into a full length movie ... One of many video projects that are just sitting on our shelf waiting for editing...

A few days after we got back to shore I went out again on another boat, this time a 190 foot fishing trawler named AtlantsFarid where we caught 900 tons of mackerel in just 3 days. I filmed every aspect of that trip as well for another movie. Right now we're getting ready to sail from Faroe back to Scotland to spend the winter working on Season 3.

What is you your point of departure as a movie maker with this documentary? I am interested in marine anthropology and this could be another excellent source of documentation in the work environment, culture and techniques of these men you filmed with, as it seems in your trailer, a great deal of respect, attention and connivence.

+design of modern life HA! We had some rough weather on the first few days as we motored 150 nautical miles out and I got horribly seasick and threw up 5 times in the first 2 days before I finally adjusted to the boat's motion. Very different from Paragon.
Hahaha... Just for the record... He was a little green, and some unexplainable nuances in the beginning, but unfortunately there was no one to film it... 😀

+MrDrj2381 Hi MrDrj2381, I never studied film making, and I've never had the opportunity to learn from a professional videographer. I just got a consumer camera and started out learning Apple's iMovie video editing software on my own. Later I moved on moved on to Apple's Final Cut Pro X.

Those aren’t seagullls. They are fulmars, a very different type of bird. And we didn’t just kill them for sport. We ate them and they were delicious.
