Thank you so much for watching. Ok, here’s a video I did a couple years ago that will describe the entire process of how to start your meadow.. th-cam.com/video/JP_MIrYj93Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=S0FfLn5a6ib6EPbM But I’ll break it down the way that I learned it and the way that I had success. Fall is the best time for both plants and seed. Our meadow was all seed seeded in the Fall. If using Plants, fall is more favorable because there’s more moisture in the air and the plants can settle in you don’t have to worry about watering them. If using seed, lots of the native seeds need the winter for a cold stratification. Meaning they need to chill for a certain amount of hours to be activated. If you’re doing seed, you also want to seed down a cover crop for the fall and winter, generally at this time you seed with oats, you would use a cover crop because if you’re going with seed, you have to clear the vegetation first. Which means you want to kill the existing vegetation. That will leave you with bare soil, and so the soil doesn’t turn into mud, or erode, you need a cover crop that will keep the structure in place. Whatever you do try not to disturb the soil, if you do, you will definitely get invasive. Our first year we removed the lawn, what was left of it, and then we used a specific plateau tolerance, specialized/custom, native seed mix. With the plateau tolerant species seed mix, we applied a selective herbicide (plateau) that spring for any of the invasives or vegetation that that popped up, these specific seeds were immune to the plateau and grew regardless. If you watch that video I left the link for, I describe everything in detail, it’s really a lot simpler than it seems. Good luck and if you want any more input or advice, I’m more than happy to help. Thank you again for watching, I really do appreciate the support. ☮️🙏☮️🙏☮️🙏☮️🙏☮️
I didn’t realize it, but I left you the link to the same video that you just commented on. I thought you were commenting on another video. My apologies.

Thank you for watching - theres no thistle or multi-flora Rosa, or any invasives behind me. We do however have some mares tail (native, but problematic), and also some mugwort ( which is problematic as well). We manually pull when we see plants in the meadow that will out compete the natives. In the beginning there was a bunch of maintenance, but not so much any more. I hope you subscribe and follow along as we like to update the meadow progress. 🙏

Hi neighbor! Thank you for this informative video. It’s been a dream of mine to have a meadow on my property in Charlestown Township. I missed out on the Lawn to Meadow program offered by the Chester County Conservation District. Evidently, there was a lot of interest from CC landowners which is a great thing. I am just beginning my research and I think you saved me a lot of work especially when it comes to selecting seeds. Two questions. Do you know of any companies around here that specialize in installing a meadow and how in the world do you keep the deer, rabbits and birds from decimating the meadow before it even has a chance to establish itself. I love the wildlife that I have attracted to my property, but boy are they hungry!
Hi Neighbor!!! So exciting!! You’re probably right around the corner from me. Anyways, yes, there are some companies out there, but there is one in particular that has the highest level of integrity. wildlawn.com They are a USDA level 4 company along with itheir sister Company Archewild. Wildlawn installs, Archewild source and grows seeds. They have basically developed a GPS system where they identify and collect the actual seeds themselves and then grow them in their own nursery. Why is this so important? - because the level of integrity of the seed will allow for your site conditions to thrive. I know them personally, and they are awesome. Good honest people as well. Just let them know that Michael sent you, get nothing out of it. And don’t forget to send some before and after pictures, I’d love to see it. 🙏🙏🙏🌱🌱🌱🌱
Oh the deer yeah, the deer as weak as nature is going to do what it’s going to do. That’s why Wildlawn will select along with your input the proper seeds that will thrive. I still battle the deer every single day. They absolutely love my New England, Astors. But at the end of the day, what is supposed to be there will remain there, Nature won’t discriminate, it will create an organic meadow for you. But in full transparency, there’s nothing like having a beautiful brilliant meadow filled with grasses and wildflowers, and a deer in meadow browsing. Inviting nature for us only put a smile on our face. There’s no greater reward than giving back! And once we gave back, we understood that the reward was not for us, but for all creatures.
@@AumsAcre Thank you so much for referring wildlawn. I will definitely be contacting them. As for the wildlife, I am learning to adopt a live and let live outlook. I’m that way with people so it should be easy to do when it comes to animals. I tell myself that if I keep providing a salad bar I should expect the customers to come. Besides, what is cuter than fawns and baby rabbits? I’m going to share this video with my neighbors who are also very interested in converting part of their lawn to meadow. One is a beekeeper. His bees visit my property and we need to keep them happy. I’ll keep you posted as to my progress. Thanks, again!

Once a year. In Spring. Lots of beneficial bugs overwinter in some hollow stems. I’ve manual cut back with pruners to 4 inches, takes a long long time. But you can set tractor to 4/6 inches that way too. That’s what I did this year. You can you a weed trimmer, powerful one with thick gauge or those steel blades too. The other alternative is to not cut it back. Nature never cuts back it’s Meadows, so that’s probably the best way. It just depends on how tidy you want to keep things. I let mine go pretty long this year until I cut it back. Hope that helps and good luck. Let me know how it turns out. 🙏🙏🙏

Hey there, I just shot a follow up video to this one, about some unexpected things that I wish I would've known. It's a short one five minutes but well worth the time. I hope you don't mind, but I'm trying to just circulate it a little bit more, so I'm sending everybody who commented on this video the link to the new video. Anyways, have a great day thank you. th-cam.com/video/sjqE2qdTZUw/w-d-xo.html
I’m wanting to start a 2 acre wildflower field in central Pa. When do you suggest is the best time to start?
Thank you so much for watching.
Ok, here’s a video I did a couple years ago that will describe the entire process of how to start your meadow.. th-cam.com/video/JP_MIrYj93Q/w-d-xo.htmlsi=S0FfLn5a6ib6EPbM
But I’ll break it down the way that I learned it and the way that I had success.
Sow seed in late fall to winter, plant bulbs in early spring.

Inspiring. Thank you.

Anyways, yes, there are some companies out there, but there is one in particular that has the highest level of integrity. wildlawn.com
They are a USDA level 4 company along with itheir sister Company Archewild.
Good luck!!! If you have any questions, let me know!!! 🙏

In thr process of doing this on a smaller scale
Good luck! I’m happy to help anyway I can!!! Thx for watching!🙏
How do you cut back a meadow? I have a garden tractor and was curious if I can do it woth that
Once a year.

Whats the reality of taking a lawn and turning it into wildflowers?
It’s actually not hard. The reality is it takes patience and researching what thrives in your own mini ecosystem. I would observe your surroundings and check out what grows natively already. That’s a good place to start.

Nice. It’s true invasive are a problem but don’t forget honeybees aren’t native to North America! They’re European.
