  • This is kind of a continuation of the reasoning I had in our previous video. I thought it was fun so I made an additional video by my own accord. Metal on!

    I think the difference between hard and heavy based on what I've been shown here is that the "heavy" stuff tends to be a self-aware attempt at creating an oftentimes very artificial sense of intensity. The "hard" stuff on the other hand derives this intensity less so from it being a conscious, intended idea but as a byproduct of natural musical processes that conveniently happen to fill out those checkmarks as a byproduct.

    • @HelvetetsPort
      @HelvetetsPort  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, that is true! You can also pretty much decide to make something that is hard, but it won't exude quite as much hardness as when it comes naturally through intangible means. The latest "intangible hardness revelation" for me is this song by Randy, before the verse comes in: th-cam.com/video/puMzi0pwa9s/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Randy-Topic
      It's something about the guitar sound not quite conveying all the notes he is playing, but he plays it so intently as to try and make it come out anyway. And then a bass "too" high in the mix often makes for hardness.

    Also it has to be emotional in certain cases for me......loved the outro ending of Berserks.....this is heavy metal!

      @HelvetetsPort  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely. At least for me, something that is hard is also emotional - emotions of hardness!

    This makes perfect sense and explains why Crust/Hardcore/whatever guys changing their style to Black Metal lack something. Without the Metal backdrop they never actually sound hard. It also explains why bands like Hällas or Dead Lord can sound "harder" than some "black metal" bands.

    I totally agree brother.
    Well said.
    Heavy is a type of sound.
    Hard is a type of playing.
    Black Sabbath is a group that though very heavy, is always hard too.
    That's why they are unsurpassed.

    Thats why I am not a fan of drawing too strong and definitive border between hard rock or so-called heavy psych/proto-metal and actual heavy metal.
    So what if Uriah Heep, Iron Butterfly or another Captain Beyond is not "heavy enough" if aesthetically and "spiritually" it is infinitely closer to Angel Witch, Candlemass or even Darkthrone than any modern groove band, nu or core will ever be. Even though the latter are much heavier.

    I have to dissagree. IMO Heavy is stuff like Witchfinder General, Pagan Altar or Balck Sabbath and Hard is as you described. Tbe chuga stuff is best described as whimpy camoshort douchery.

    • @hurricanehordak
      @hurricanehordak 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Usually when bands decribe their new album as "very heavy" (possibly the most heavy shit they recorded so far), the riffs sound like late Pantera. So our tutor is 100% spot on.

      I think there are these two sides to hard rock and heavy metal. There is music which wants to be horror, dark, doomy, "heavy" which I think is personified in the band Black Sabbath. There is other music which wants virtuoso guitar playing, falsetto vocals, harmony, it wants to write catchy riffs and not to scare the listener away which I think is personified in bands like Deep Purple but Black Sabbath, the "heavy" band also has some of these elements. You can call this I suppose the "hard" rock side of this music.

      Några tips och tricks att dela med dig av? Själv, mer vad gäller spelstil än själva skriveriet iofs, så gillar jag att alltid använda det band på gitarrhalsen som låter hårdast/kan förmedla mest känslor av allvar, alltså att för det mesta vara högre upp på halsen tonmässigt. Blir ofta lite opersonlig touch när man är på 0:e, 1:a och 2:a bandet. Jag tycker också låtar som går i C# har en tendens att låta extra allvarliga, samt att det blir en hård/allvarlig effekt att skifta mellan C#- och E-skala. /Tomas

    • @Bravilor

      I believe that the sentiments in hard rock are usually a bit too "mellow/mature" for the music to really come across as hard. Of course, 80 % of heavy metal is in the wrong and 95 % of what is being touted at the present day, but those few percent of real hardness is where it's at! :)

      @@Bravilor I don't think sociopolitical consciousness of classic hard rock is mellow.

    @johnm2558 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just as the intention of the speaker can give a word, an epiteth, an insult real weight and menace....could the same not be said for heavy metal? That is to say intention alone could be thought of as a major factor in the creation of a hard riff? Your use of the words "earnest" and "deliberate" makes me think you may agree with me on this point. :)

    • @HelvetetsPort
      @HelvetetsPort  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that's exactly it! I think feelings and notes are quite interconnected (a reason why music is such a popular thing in this world I guess) so portraying intent through riffs is definitely a thing. It could also be in the form of an image coming to your mind that you want to sort of translate into a riff/chord/note sequence.
      On our upcoming album I wanted for example to make a riff that symbolizes wantonly putting a cigarette out in your unfinished food.

    • @johnm2558
