I absolutely love this! I love how instead of forbidding him to leave, or trying to make him question his feelings, she goes after how much he cares about Varian, and what Hugo fears his reaction will be. And I absolutely love the song itself, it's a lot of fun and very complimentary for whoever is singing it. Amazing job!
Man, this is why villains have some of the best songs. This is manipulation done right. These are all the signs of gaslighting. Because in order to gain control of Hugo, she manipulated his thoughts and makes him question his reality as often seen in abusive relationships. It’s a form of psychological abuse. Donella did raise Hugo to believe her words to be true and even uses “compassionate” words as a weapon like for instance, “I took you in out of the kindness of my heart”, as if to say “I care about you and everything I do is for your own good”. Though her words are far from the truth as it’s clear that she’s using him and knows how to gain control of him to assure he stays useful to her. But it makes sense for Hugo to start questioning her words later on as it is possible to see the signs when you meet people who treat you differently. People who don’t use compassionate words against you and actually show genuine feelings towards you. This is why Hugo will start seeing the signs: he’ll doubt his feelings and reality, he’ll question his judgment and perception, he’ll feel vulnerable and insecure, he’ll feel alone and powerless, he might wonder if he’s gone crazy, he’ll feel disappointed in himself, he’ll get confused, he might feel inadequate, he would second-guess himself, he’ll wonder what’s wrong with him, and finally struggle to make decisions. Hugo is going to have to realize that his feelings are his feelings alone and they are valid. That Donella’s words aren’t as valid as his feelings. Man Disney!! Take a hint! This. 👏Must.👏 Be. 👏Made!👏 Talented fans, such as yourself, have practically gift wrapped this for them! Time for them to start untying the ribbon. 🥲

At the end of the song, where Donella says " For the boy who fed him..." And there's a short music break there, i can see Hugo with wide eyes, trying come up with an argument. " I can tell him it wasn't h-how it seems!" " There has to be another way!" " I'll tell him that i didn't want to do this!-" " Lies." Donella speaks in his ear, cutting him off. And Hugo is left standing there with a dumbfounded face, full of regret
as someone who has been manipulated and gaslit to no end, this is extremely well done. The "you're gonna hurt people" and the "i raised you" both are just so well done. this actually gave me chills, this is exactly what being manipulated feels like. They make you doubt weather your own feelings and opinions are valid by making you feel bad and like you owe them something. the whole thing with hugo betraying varian's trust when he already has trust issues as it is and donella playing the emotionally abusive mother figure is just so perfect. honestly hugo is kind of like a young flynn rider and varian would be the figure that makes him realize that maybe stealing isn't the best thing, and with that comparison, to me, the line "straight in the direction of the gallows" just hits that much harder, seeing as in the movie, eugene was nearly hung. the callbacks that can be made to the show and the original movie in vat7k are just great and this song provides all of that, it's beautiful.

Its a shame the show got rejected because Varian is a 'side character.' Even though that is the case, I still think the show would have been well received, seeing how popular the character has become.
