Stunning song. I grew up in the north and the era of full employment came to an end just as I left for London. I'd visit home and every time there were more men on the streets, just hanging around, no work, nowhere to go, waiting for the pubs to open. The whole of the north was just left to rot by the Governments of the 1980s and early 90s. My nephews became law breakers, ended up in borstal and prison, their kids in care. The whole trajectory of their lives was set in their youth.
I missed seeing him in a show he opened to have dinner with a friend from out of town. I had never heard of him so didnt think anything of it. Started listening to his stuff a couple of months later realising this guy is amazing. Checked online if he was ever coming to NZ... when I saw he was the opening act... man that sucked! years later it still kills me!
I was oot having a pint with Sam on the quay the other neet b4 he pissed off to Ireland. Great down to earth lad! Great family all of them!! Class talent from Shields! Come ower and have a pint or 3 in the low lights and have a few more along the quay.😁
He’s from my city / town Newcastle upon Tyne. Obviously you know the songs about but it’s honestly about the northeast of England in general as we have the highest suicide rates in young men in Britain cause of how much of a struggle it is. All our industries got shut in the 80s and the government have basically left us to struggle with hardly no jobs and the jobs there is it’s low paid, house prices are sky high. And they only focus on the south of England. But Newcastle and the north east in general has a lot of good music that’s come from the hardship so that’s one good thing that struggle creates ❤
