I believe only actor like Irfan Khan was only able to make an identity of themselves from both the Industries in both critically and commercially. He is indeed a gem. Miss him a lot ❤️❤️❤️
Because he was among the only few ones who could match the acting skill level of the Hollywood stars he was paired with. A true legend, RIP.
Totally agree. Today my kids were watching Jurassic world and irfan just on commanding position when come to on screen, he just own the scene. we lost gem definately.
As if they are successful in india either lol 😂
Bollywood is about to doom due to non creative and new content so what they are doing in hollywood would be better for them.
Before irrfan there was om Puri,Shashi Kapoor,Saeed jaffery

Hollywood doesn't really need these Bollywood stars, it's only the OTT platforms which need them in their films for marketing in India.

But Hollywood indeed does make better movies than Bollywood.

I really believe Hollywood doesn't know how to utilize Indian Actors, with only few like Irrfan Khan saab and Ali Fazal standing out.
even their roles were just average.
Randeep Hooda in extraction too...
Ali fazal is a real chupa rustam . I don't remember how many movies he has done in Hollywood but he has done quite a few and the best part is he is seen more of an character actor than a person of Indian origin . I think he will have a long career there and might deliver something big one day

Ali Fazal , really, nobody remembers him even in Bollywood
The only guy who did a badass role in Hollywood was Randeep Hooda in Extraction i mean my man is the only male actor who was in the entire movie(nor a cameo or supporting role) and did some of the best action sequences that were stand out🔥
He absolutely killed it. Chris Hemsworth and Sam Hargrave really hit it out of the park with that first instalment!
Irfan in many movies too
Especially Jurrasic World
Watch the League of Extraordinary Gentleman. We tend to forget the og who first acted in a pure action movie along with a good character to potray. Naseerudin Shah as Captain Nemo. It's a really good action flick but is very underrated.

@@TriedRefusedProductionsHis character deserves his own spin off movie.
Alia is nothing without karan johar , i am sad that Aish did less movies after marriage but thank god always quality work. Ponnyin selvan1 and 2 are just masterpieces she set the screen on fire with Nandhini !!!! Even if she got a handful movies in hollywood. She was universally praised fpr bride and prejudice, provoked such a powerful true movie and pink panther 2 where she was the main villain. She deserved so much more but showed how she with her own struggle and hard work got west movies when she was removed from bollywood movies, remember veer zara ,chalte chalte episode etc. And Aishwarya always stayed true to her indian her roots. Her Hollywood movies stayed true to her indian roots with substance. F.ex Mistress of spices Tilo was a fabulous character such as kiranjeet ahluwalia and lalita
I think only Irrfan Khan was able to leave a mark in Hollywood. That's because he never cared about catering to Hollywood audience he just focused on his role and not how foreign audience will think of him.
@kochikame363it makes actor driven movies but not the same way we make ours...their actor driven movies has culture difference that's all...
@@arch391I disagree. Most movies I have seen are not based on actors but wether the actor fits in the role of a character that makes the movie better. They are not the same thing. One chooses to write a story based on image while another writes a deep story and then puts the best possible chive for an actor to elevate it. Take a look at goodfellas and a gangster movie in our country. Both movies have characters that can be larger than life but inherently goodfellas is a classic because the plot was written without anyone in mind. Even Nolan said so in an interview, he wrote Oppenheimer THEN realized that he knows someone who looks like Oppenheimer, hence Cillain Murphy is in the role.

@@shawnthomas6492 I disagree...That's where people are wrong...Why does everyone thinks Holly^wood is only surrounded by fiction or Nolan style movies???
I don't think everyone believes that...
Holly^wood has been there from a very long time...Its history of evolution is as complex as ours but most of the people are only looking particular 'genre'...
Most of the times we are only exposed to certain kind of movied and we never get to explore the large section of movies in Holly^wood...cause many people don't like to watch them or they don't find them interesting...
That why you have not seen everything the Holly^wood has to offer...neither have I...
I think your summary at the end was spot on. Atleast with Netflix. Their stories so far didn't really need an Indian character. They've realised that with every passing year Indian audience is growing in population and internet presence and they've decided to cash in on it. There's a whole ecosystem that exists wooing Indian audience for their content. With Netflix , i don't really know if I can call it a wrong practice but from a storytelling perspective it's pointless.
INDIA MAANE VIEWSSS
That's absolutely true. And I think Indians have always looked at other countries for validation. Whenever an Indian appreciated RRR , we didn't feel much; but when someone from other countries appreciated it, we lost our minds because a foreigner loved it.
They know that if they cast an Indian actor, Indians will flock to watch inspite of the quality.

that kind of thing only happens to a select no of movies even from hollywood.

@@rohithkumar8708 Maybe I worded it wrong. An Indian movie defying physics is all bullshit, but the same thing done by a marvel is amazing. I love both an Indian masala film and a marvel film ( though I am not liking their recent films).
Also, I think that many Indian actors look at Hollywood as something that is above Indian films and will do whatever movies it takes to make a place in Hollywood rather than try and make Indian films better. ( I am not taking any shots at Alia here, just saying in general)
I went in for this movie rooting for Alia and see what she brings for her Hollywood debut, but I was extremely hurt to sit through this mediocre movie and see Alia just do nothing. I honestly think her role in the movie RRR, however short , was much better and will be remembered longer .

As a kid, I remember watching Rajnikanth in a Hollywood film (Bloodstone) gave me a surprise. On top of it, it was not a small role. He was there for most of the film. Seeing Saeed Jaffery, Naseerudin Shah, Om puri in foreign ventures was good and memorable experience. And they actually brought something great (on the table) with their performances.
Nowadays, when you see Anil Kapoor in MI series, OR Deepika in xXx series, You do not feel that they are bringing anything unique (no disrespect to the actors). If you replace them with any other actor the experience will not change. While You cannot replace Om Puri in City of Joy.

That's the problem with Bollywood actors. They work toward building a brand or a certain stardom in bollywood. In Hollywood it doesn't work that way as actors work towards their craft and not their brand. Stardom and box office just follows. Bollywood actors go about it the wrong way they work towards stardom and want to transition to hollywood based on stardom. Priyanka Deepika and Aishwarya failed because stardom and brand doesn't exactly work in Hollywood the way that it works in Bollywood, as a result you can see the poor choices of films and their lack of talent. He is making movies which won't be first choice for most of the A-Listers or Bollywood's veterans even if offered unless big money or name is joined. Ali Fazal's role in Abdul & Karim was absolutely beautiful while his role in Death of a Nile was perfect, even his recent venture Kandahar as the villain was good. He is someone I am eagerly waiting for with "What's Next".
I feel it has also to do with raising your profile here in India. Even though there are people who do understand that Hollywood is not the pinnacle of cinema and projects like Parasite and Dark can attract eyeballs from all over the globe due to their genius, there exists a majority population here who feel that going to Hollywood is the guarantee for an actor to be labelled as a bigger star.

@@TriedRefusedProductionsyeah but none of Priyanka's roles so far were characters from India. They were either Indian American or ethnically ambiguous.
And let's stop with this very typical Indian accent shaming please, it's okay to switch accents, specially for roles and even un real life it's fine, a lot of actual people of Indian origin do it to blend in and not stick out. I think RRR made alia go way over her head. Now i undestand why Rajamouli gave alia little to no screen time on RRR 😂😂. Even the foriegn lady opposite NTR JR had a better scren presence than alia. Another aspect could also be the way in which they are marketed. Her look for the Gucci 25 showcase in Seoul was also underwhelming, but I’m sure this will help her get back to the Met Gala next year. With Animes and Samurai movie then ghost movies Japan took their interest. So many remakes and inspiration and aesthetic.
The Ring, Kill Bill, Matrix , Star Wars ,Ghost in Shell, Battle Angel. Bullet Train , Big Hero 6 , Attack On Titan etc.
Then China came with Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and brought whole gener of Kung-fu and fantasy.
Mulan, Kung-Fu Panda, Rush Hour etc.
And let's not forget the famous animated show The Last Airbender that is amalgamation of mostly East Asian cultures.
Right now Korea is doing it with Kpop and Kdrama. The even won best picture award in Oscar for Parasite.
Sweet Home, Squid Game, BTS , BlackPink , All of Us R Dead, Decendants of the Sun, Iteawon Class etc.
From movies like Avenger Endgame to Mission Impossible 6 , fashion brands and techs promoting themselves in Korea and inviting kpop idols and K-celeb in award show it's reflects their popularity.
All these clearly shows the level of popularity they hv vs India has and it's all bcs all these countries r making amazing content.
Although occasionally India did made a stir like with Sholey and RRR but they all r one time thing.
Imdians hv to continuously hv to put out great content one after another. "Never before seen" kind.
RRR's success gives us a nice momentum but we hv to continue it otherwise us getting in Hollywood is big deal but for Hollywood it's nothing.
Aishwarya Rai had been unofficial boycotted by bollywood bigwigs in the early 2000's. Hence, she had no choice but to foray into hollywood and bengali cinema.
This is the same reason why a lot of regional stars leave Bollywood. As a Bengali person, I remember being super excited when Paoli Dam debuted in Bollywood with “Hate Story”. But after that, the kind of roles she got to do were sub-par compared to the amazing roles that are written for her in the Bengal. So she left Bollywood as soon as she could.
Same goes for Prithviraj and Rana Daggubatti. They did mediocre roles in Bollywood for a couple years and then left immediately because there are much better opportunities for them in regional cinema.
(What is ironic is that Bollywood barely has any good scripts even for the more established actors 😅)

Looking at Priyanka's previous ventures, I think Citadel was outstanding. The theme of citadel left a lot unexplored and almost mysterious. She was fiesty and gorgeous, and Richard complemented her well. I am excited about the next iteration.
You should have added in the end.. Kareena's dialogue from KWK.. sab jaa rahe hai bus pakar..Jokes apart.. completely agree to this.. I never understood the obsession to be in Hollywood, but I feel for Priyanka, out of all at least has done some reasonable work.
Om Puri was the most successful Indian actor in American (Hollywood) and British movies. The Oscars also paid their respects to him after his demise.
I think what they are trying to do with Hollywood is what they did with Bollywood. They first break into our industry with a commercial success and only after solidifying their position as commercially viable stars, they went on to prove their versatility with much more diverse roles. Alia, Priyanka, Deepika - all are/were trying to do the same with Hollywood as well. On the other hand Irfan khan, Ali Fazal, Anupam Kher, went on for those more-acting-oriented roles first and then went on to star in some commercial projects (maybe a cameo or two before that). Both approaches can work based on what you want to achieve. We have seen stars entering into Hollywood successfully in both ways from other industries like Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Penelope Cruz, Ana de Armas, Benedict Cumberbatch, Henry Cavil, Tom Holland. The priority for these three is clearly to establish themselves more as a international brand. With what we know now after RRR's success about what good Indian films can do if presented on a global platform the right way, I think it would have been more beneficial for them to work in such Indian films that could potentially have a global appeal and help them place on that international map rather than starring in these mediocre commercial flicks just as a marketing tool. Its high time now that we focus on taking our Indian Film Industry (all languages) global instead of trying to break into Hollywood. Hollywood doesn't represent international cinema. It's just one country's film industry that was marketed very well and achieved a good penetration in various countries around the globe. We can be the same. We just need to aim higher. And there will come a time in future when actors from Hollywood will try to break in our Indian Film Industry.

Aish should not be underestimated...her short lived career has not made her any less memorable.
As for Priyanka..she is an amazing speaker, ambassador...the roles she has participated in are largely mid but has not hurt her brand.

Based on what I have observed,
Stars who belong to their industry should strictly stick to their industry and make content over there, and if they want to reach to a wider audience, should resort to getting it properly dubbed.
We saw what happened with Prabhas
We saw what happened with Priyanka Chopra
We saw what happened with Alia as well now.
Either choose meaty subjects in the other industry or stick to your own and get them dubbed to other languages.

The hollywood obsession is another thing (inc me), but considering it's situation for last few years has made me take it down a notch that i'm not even comparing film industries anymore. For me cinema doesn't revolve around one language & one land anymore 👏👏 (that's character progress 😎)

@kochikame363 and you think South Indian Film Industry has stopped making cringe movies 😂
The problem I think is the way how Hollywood thinks of casting Indian actors only from a commercial standpoint. Most of the actors that debuted in Hollywood, didn't have much of an impactful character to begin with. They were either a part of ensembles or eye candy at times, but during promotional activities in India, they had all the limelight. So, essentially Indian audiences would buy tickets/subscriptions to OTTs to watch their favorite actor and get disappointed with their flick-and-miss roles.
Tom Cruise, the rock and vin disel all actors are below average
Asking an Indian to play a lead in any of their movies is like asking Ryan Gosling to play Akbar in Jodha Akbar.
I tend to agree with you. It is the same for UK actors in Hollywood. There are such limited opportunities to play characters that are not stereotypes eg English actors playing villains, aristocrats, or bumbling idiots like Hugh Grant for most of their careers. It is the same for Pakistani actors in Hollywood, most recently Mehwish Hayat and Fawad Khan in Ms Marvel or Ahad Raza Mir in Resident Evil. These are mediocre productions that are not interested in the actors etc but rather targeting a demographic and creating a new audience for their product. If it is rare for English actors to break through in any significant way, I feel the idea that Indian or Pakistani actors will is just unrealistic. I prefer Amitabh Bachchan Ji's approach, become so famous and loved in India that the West comes to you!

With Priyanka Chopra it is different though she was not getting work here in India thats why she ventures herself to Hollywood
I don't know why but a lot of people from Asia especially (South Asia) crave for some kind of western validation. We just have a weird infatuation that someone should continuously praise us. Although it is our culture that we care and respect our guest and like when they praise our food and culture but many times it becomes jarring ex- a lot of cringey foreign TH-cam reaction channels make video with title or content mentioning india and many of us just swarm in to watch those videos or how many people first thaught rrr was a decent movie but when it got accepted and applauded by foreigners those same people changed opinion and understood it for the masterpiece it was.
Similarly people in Bollywood are also infatuated with foreign directors and Hollywood. Whenever a famous foreign celebrity comes to India some Bollywood actor or director hosts a grand reception party and lot of reporters come and take their interviews we kind of celebrate them. But at the same time ignore many of our directors and actors when they use some kind of symbolism or some kind of foreshadowing we just say it's a mere coincidence like guru dutt in his movie pyaasa stood on the entrance just like Jesus was crucified which signified his character similar to Jesus how he had sacrificed whereas we appreciate and talk a lot about when a Hollywood director uses symbolism.
My father had to once attend a meeting in Japan so while on flight from Singapore to Japan a blonde lady was sitting beside him a Japanese airhostess came and offered a complimentary matcha tea to both of them and both denied the tea but she wanted to show or promote Japanese culture that while on 6 hour flight she came and offered her the tea four to five times until she drank tea and later came to ask how did she like it but didn't ask my father once maybe because he was not a caucasian.
It is that most of us want to live the 'american dream' we want to go to us, uk , Canada and make it big and try to represent our people.most of the Bollywood actors and actresses might also have seen Hollywood movies since childhood and adored them and also want to be a part of them for us there fits an idiom "ghar ki murgi dal barabar"
If the actors are good enough Hollywood would understand their potential and offer them a nice role just like stevn Spielberg offered amrish puri and sree devi roles. Actors shouldn't go and suck up to them to get cameos and small glimpses in movies like ishan khattar had in spiderman.we shouldbelieve in our projects and rather try to elevate our content and take some risks so that our content gets recognised globally who knows just like tollywood saw a change in perception from over the top action movies to top notch cinema. We might also pull a similar feat and our movies get recognised for content also instead of just Bollywood dance numbers or colours.
I'd blame Hollywood for this. Obviously if an actor is offered a role they're not going to deny but it's Hollywood's responsibility to not only cast for the sake of inclusivity but also for the depth and talent. Years have gone by and it's time they start taking Indian talent seriously.
The only reason they choose international projects is money. I cant see any other reason. They want to make the big buck no matter the quality
The pitch and pace of the Hollywood movie style is different from the pitch and pace of Indian films. The acting style and skills that Indian actors bring with them might not necessarily fit well in a Hollywood movie. The cringiest example of this is Aishwarya Rai in Pink Panther. Her energy stood out like a sore thumb from everyone else’s
And the reality of getting good roles in Hollywood is you need to live in the US. You need to meet people. You need to go for auditions. You need to network. If you live outside of the US and just depend on your US agent to recommend you to casting directors, you hardly get work, and you are more likely to only get the B grade stuff.
That said, I don’t think Indian actors who have made it big in India try that hard to get work in the West. They have their Indian audience to fall back on, a massive audience who loves them, knows them, knows their talent. India is one country where the movie business really does not depend on Western approval and does not have to care. The domestic market is huge, and Indian audiences much prefer their local films to international ones. If their Indian heroes and heroines flop in Hollywood, Indian audiences don’t care
Excellent point addressed. That goes to show their choices for films in general. They go for big Hollywood movies same as they do in indian market. The difference is the projects lik Pathan that's celebrated in india is a dud in hollywood. Same way the overseas directors also take them not based on their acting, but starpower to cater to Indian audience. That's it! Therefore Priyanka Deepika n now Alia all hv featured in mediocre projects whereas true actors lije Irrfan, Anupam and Dimpal are getting meaty roles in quality movies. Ali Fazal and Hooda arent getting recognition in india, but doing good overseas bcz despite they feature in commercial movies, they don think of them as superstar as much as actors first. Nimrat Kaur is a fine example who featured in a TV series like Homeland nd made mark in it.
I think for some reason Indian audience cannot accept if an actor does small roles after playing a lead role in a movie. A European or Australian actor can go to Hollywood to play a blink-n-miss role, come back to his country and get back to normal life. But Indian audience will be very critical and even dismissive about Indian actors doing the same.
What is an aspiring actor supposed to do if after knocking many doors finally a Hollywood production house agrees to cast them in a movie?
On the other hand online platforms like Netflix, Disney, Amazon want to cast Indian actors because they want Indian audience to have a reason to buy their subscriptions. And they also want other audience to discover Indian content.
We worship actors
Great layer of inception
Marathi actors doing bit roles in Hindi movies(Not considering leading actors like madhuri Dixit,Nana Patekar, Atul Kulkarni,Vikram Gokhale etc. )
Hindi actors doing bit roles in English movies ( Not considering the exceptional ones who do great and get great roles to play there)
Seriously, seems like Irrfan and Ali fazal have chosen some remarkable projects rather than a fat cheque. That's their personality in Indian projects as well. I think they have a special spirit and that shows. Despite all the Hollywood talk and "global stardom," these celebs have done nothing like that in global projects. Not that they are not talented! But it's a tricky business I guess.
It's a formula. Most indian top actresses start their career struggling to be recognised in mediocre indian films(e.g. Deepika in Houseful and the likes). Later they learn the craft and become top actresses. It's a journey. Same they want to follow in Hollywood but the roles dry up if your films are not successful or critically acclaimed. None of their films have worked so far. Hope they get meatier roles and taste success there too.
Aishwarya Rai Bachhan remains India’s first Global star #OG. Consider her impact if Social Media existed in early 2000’s.
But she ain't a good actor tho more as a model

I think we need to be a little more open-minded. Actors are artists and art is meant to transcend barriers like language, cultures etc. So if, as artists, they want to venture into projects from around the world, we shouldn't inhibit their creativity. Actors and all artists should be free to work on any projects, that's the beauty of art - its transcendent nature 😊

When Hollywood comes calling, don't say no. As simple as that. You get 50x the paycheck for support role and if you do a tidy job, you may very well get atleast 2 or 3 more offers. And, the 5x to 10x increase in future Indian ventures is just icing on the cake
