LOCAL Saint Lucia Experience (Soufriere and Castries) I Vlog #42

  • We arrived in the beautiful island of Saint Lucia with Bernard (still feeling sick) in tow. We took a different approach for touring the Caribbean, instead of aiming for the idyllic beaches and luxury resorts in Castries and Gros Islet, we decided spend our short 3 days stay at an Airbnb in a small local seaport town of Soufriere.
Taking the off beaten path also has it consequences, as we soon learnt, small towns like these don't usually get many frequent foreign visitors, so naturally our presences attracts plenty of attention and interests from the locals, both good and bad. We were blessed to meet some very friendly folks that showed us the authentic experience of island life in St Lucia, and also some rather hostile locals that made themselves very clear they do not like our presences near them. It's rather unfortunate, but we made the best out of our experience during our stay there.
When we had a full day to explore the island, we decided to do a day trip to visit Castries, the capital city of the country; over climbing a Piton, which is mountainous volcano as Bernard was still not feeling a 100% yet.
It was definitely an eye opening experience, taking the local "bus/van" that only cost $3 one way, that took us through many mountainous paths and windy roads, and it was a glimpse of how many of the locals commute to the main city for work/school and home.
Our highlight in St Lucia was definitely the food, and the hospitality of our host and some of the restaurants that gave us this opportunity to experience this small part of their life and culture.

We started our trip back in April 2, 2019 from New York City. We quit our 9-6 jobs, sold all of our belongings, and began traveling full time. We left our jobs because we were unable to be with family and enjoy life. Work was taking up too much time and something had to change. We saved up for 2 years and began traveling as soon as we found a deal that would take us around the world for just $285.00. We started this #travelvlog to share our adventures with friends and family. At the one year mark, we realized that we had only scratched the surface and there was still so much to see. We are so fortunate to be doing this every day. We hope you enjoy our content and will subscribe to our adventures.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed St Lucia overall, it's a beautiful place from what I've seen. I grew up in the UK but my heritage is from neighbouring Caribbean islands which I visit regularly. In terms of the hostility some islanders are extremely weary of Asian people due to China's current involvement in the region politically and the way some locals have been treated in the past. So she may have been suspicious and not able to differentiate between someone from mainland China "investigating" and someone of Asian descent who is just a tourist.
She could have easily utilised some charm though and say 'a dollar, a photo.' Next time you go to St Lucia, greet someone with 'Sak a fet doudou' (pronounced: sack ah fete doodoo) lol they speak Kweyol there too and it simply means 'how are you doing darling'. People say that to strangers all the time so use sticking out to your advantage and I guarantee that will diffuse any escalating situation or speed up any slow staff! All the best,

Hey Denielle! Thanks for all these great tips and pointers! We'll be sure to use this greeting when we get a chance to go back.
Saint Lucia was actually our first stop out of five islands we had visited in the Caribbean. We completely understand the sentiment about the Chinese "globalizing" these countries. We also notice certain locals aren't too keen on tourism where as some islands like Tobago welcomes it with open arms. We don't blame her, and it's all part of exploring and crossing cultures. We hope some day that sustainable tourism can be a thing for smaller islands such as St Lucia were tourists actually can pay it forward to benefit the local communities and without destroying their culture and way of life.

@@exploreaswego I stumbled upon your channel while browsing Caribbean related videos, and I did subscribe. I am also going through your list of videos and watching them. Prior to Covid I was an avid traveler, having visited around 35 or so countries - both as landed as well as cruise passenger. At the top of my list of favorite countries are the following 6: Grand Cayman, St. Kitts, Aruba, Puerto Rico, St. Lucia and Greece. There was a time when Honduras was in the top 5 of countries I love, but the run-away crime situation there caused me to strike it from my list. And that is sad and most unfortunate because I have had some of the best vacation time there.

I grew up in St Lucia and I know some of the ppl can be insensitive as it is a small island and anyone or anything that seems different they are a bit wary or make fun of and don’t think of it hurting the person feelings or being racist cause we don’t really have racism as it’s mostly black ppl who live there .... but as a lot of ppl from other countries (including the Asia’s) came down and to them kinda took over jobs and certain things .... I’m so so so sorry and a little embarrassed that u didn’t have the best time as I know that at Lucians can be the most friendliest kindest ppl in the Caribbean but it’s such a shame that u guys didn’t get to experience the full st lucian experience and as a fellow lucian I am so sorry and if ever I met u guys in St Lucia I would love to be ur guide and show u around and make up for what’s happened .....

I am originally from Ukraine. Before visiting St Lucia in late 1990's I had travelled to more than 20 countries. When I saw St Lucia for the first time I immediately fell in love with it. It was the most beautiful country I'd seen so far to that point of time. The people of the island were very proud, handsome, friendly and knowledge-thirsty. There was a lot of poverty but no panhandlers whatsoever. And amid this gift of Nature lies Sufriere, a fantastically beautiful town, a real gem that I don't have words to describe. Those who never saw it have to see it. By the way, we are a gay couple and we walked everywhere, never taking a car. We never experienced any hostility.

Would love to hear more stories about your experiences.

@@exploreaswego You guys are very adventurous. Are you Americans? The way we discovered St Lucia was a bit unusual. My husband wanted to explore some tiny island in the Caribbean called Mayru (not sure about the spelling), where only 200 people live and where there is only one hotel with 4 rooms for the whole island. So we made a reservation and started our trip. The way to get there was complicated: we were supposed to fly from New York to St Lucia, then take an airplane to another island and from there travel in a boat to Mayru. But when we arrived to St Lucia we were told that the small airline went bankrupt and there was no way to fly to the next island. So we got stuck in St Lucia. This was very upsetting. We went to the local tourist agency and asked for help. They recommended a local hotel where we stayed the next few days. At first we were disappointed and upset. But the more we explored St Lucia the more we fell in love with it. At the end we were very glad that our original plans had failed.

Thanks for watching our videos! We are a couple, been together for 7 years now.. :o
It depends on where you are planning to go in the island, if you are in there for the resorts to relax and chill, you'll be ok, since most resorts are in gated communities in secular bubbles.
If you are staying where the locals are like we were - in Soufriere or even Castries, you will stand out as a tourist.
As a small island, we got mixed receptions from the local community. Some welcome us with open arms and are very friendly to share their island culture with us, while some see tourism as destroying their community and aren't as open.
Overall, there aren't much LGBTQ activities going on, so don't expect any parties or bar of that sort. Mostly activities in Saint Lucia are outdoorsy stuff like hiking up Pitons and just exploring beaches or waterfalls. Hope this helps!

Curious how much it would cost to take a taxi from center of town to Anse Chastanet Beach (round trip). I plan to go a few times during my stay, so I want to budget it into my costs since I'm more of a budget traveler than a resort person. Thank you!

Yes I am a Saint Lucian. I wasn’t happy about that. People need to be treated with respect. If they are unhappy about pictures or videos , they can convey the message in a respectful way. Are you guys harassed for being Asians or for being a gay couple? Per Wikipedia in St Lucia it is illegal to be gay but not to be a lesbian. This issue is insane but that’s just what we read. Somehow you did have a great time which is awesome.

    • @exploreaswego

We were actually never harassed for being a gay couple, but we were called names like CHINO and CHI*KS while our travels in South America. It isn't easy, but we brush it off and keep going. When we go to places where it's illegal... we make sure to respect their country rules and laws. That's all we can do. Be mindful of what we wear is also very important. That's all you can do when you go into someone's home. Have you guys ever experienced something like that?
