Yep, the use of the Hip is paramount, and should always be. Sine Wave is useful, but without the Hip it's almost useless.

Yep people emphasize sine wave and sacrifice heel motion. Sine wave is beneficial but itf practitioners nearly obsess with it

But he's turning his hip the wrong way... as in almost all korean styles basically. In japanese styles, it's one of two types: internal rotation (you can barely see it from outside), or rotation in the other direction.
Rotating the hip in the direction of the technique as shown here makes it slow and weaker actually.
So when you do your Aré-Makki (Gedan-Baraï in japanese styles), your hip should rotate from facing full front to open (not open to facing front). That way the Hikité (pulling hand) gets its full sense, as it is pulling where the hip is pulling, and the blocking technique gets more power (like a cannon: you can see how the cylinder retreats while firing the missile).

How does that fit with the sine wave?

Hip motion and sine wave need to be hand in hand, and they work well together. Hip is incredible on it's own. Sine wave is not when it is purely done. Together, they are better. You can absolutely develop subtle wave motion and apply it to old school hip rotation.

Contradiction. The sine wave is b.s. not natural.

@@carlito6038 No I'll disagree with you on that one, but it does Need to be used in Conjunction with the Hip. Without the Hip it has only a small effect, but with the hip it aids it greatly. I use to also do Kendo, and everyone I trained with held a Black Belt in Karate of one Style or another, and all of them were a fair bit bigger and stronger than me. Our Instructor was a 5th Degree in Kendo from Japan. I was always getting told not to hit so hard with the Shinai. I didn't think I was, but what I did notice was that I was using the Sine Wave bounce as I struck. I was unknowingly dropping my weight into each strike, and added with the extended length of the Shinai I was hitting everyone rather hard. Apparently. :)
