    Owned a GD, have a GR now. I get why people would like the GD more, but I'm way happier with what I have now.
    I have a '13 widebody, which became a dealbreaker once I became aware of its existence. But, I like the look of it more, way better seats, way better trans, a bit more power out of the 2.5, waaaaay cooler gage cluster, and I do enjoy the heated seats and what little other tech it has.
    And having owned a wagon and now a sedan, the difference is completely cosmetic. I was all about the wagon for storage at first, but you can't really get any more height in the wagon, since the hatch window is on such a drastic angle. If anything, the sedan trunk is at least 6 inches longer. Found that out when I tried to put the oem mat from the bugeye in the GR. Thought I could save 100 bucks there, way too small.
    But, the biggest thing is growing up. I have a daughter now, who I did not have when I had my bugeye. So I'm a huge fan of the safety and reliability of the newer model. I mean, not the my bugeye was unreliable by any stretch, but it was pushing 200k by the time I sold it and I was replacing parts left and right. At this point the age of a GD is going to become a real problem, especially considering how people put them up for sale at such unrealistic prices. Spun bearing and quarter rust, 5k firm, don't lowball me, bro.

  • @InputLavelle
    @InputLavelle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The 2019+ STI comes with the RA shortblock so you can't really go wrong there. Not to mention all the updates/upgrades over the years on top of that. Looks are debatable but reliability really has only gone up over the years by improving parts.

    The best performing STI ever made is always the "next" S20x car. Outright performance, I'm not sure any production Subaru ever made can best the S209. The most valuable and arguably the coolest are the 22Bs. The dark horses are the wagon and hatchback models. Super practical, and there are few modern AWD/turbo/manual alternatives. Bonus cool points always go to imported early WRXs, or swaps. Those that know what they're looking at always appreciate them. To everyone else, they're nearly invisible.
    The current gen is a startlingly good package for a single car owner. But just doesn't quite float the boat for some folks with a 2nd car to DD. Take my moaning with a grain of salt, as I used to own a Baja Turbo. So my sense of style is bizarre.

    • @CaptainAlex69

      I want a Baja Turbo so badly as a daily, or some other manual, preferably turbo, Subaru SUV, so I can preserve my 2013 WRX Sedan

    my favorite gem has always been the blob eyed because you could just tell it was raw and one to one. so if i was seeking a car to have fun with and throw around, i’d get that one. but if i was looking at amenities, i’d get this latest gen (like my 2017 limited) because they REALLY stepped it up when it comes to that.
    when i get about half ways into paying this car off, i want to get an 05 wrb

    Bugeye for me , simple lines but the 1995 Gc8 Ra is still my favorite 2600 lb ! Lot's to choose from here in Canada , have a 2003 with complete STI swap ! After 2003 JDM STI swaps are a little harder to swap because of ecu issues ! VF 39 90% chance of cracking ! Some of the ej207 imports have put out 320 hp stock in my area , mostly version 8 !

    Just a little FYI for the 2008-2014 the Hatchbacks are GR's the saloon/sedan are GV's. Also, the sport to sport sharp does have more effect. while yes it mainly controls the throttle map. if the car is protuned the boost target is changed between the settings. for instance with mine my boost target comes in 1500 RPM earlier in sports sharp than sport.

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When it came to the VDC it dosent actually change throttle mapping just throttle %. When I was getting pro tuned I was curious about it and started picking the tuners mind. But it is a nifty little knob to have

    • @Kilrathal
      @Kilrathal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Smeedia ahh yes apologies mean the throttle% like you said in the vid. Little brain fart. Main thing i wish is that the car would remember what DCCD and traction setting you last had it on. Like how it defaults to full traction control and auto neutral everytime 😭

    I like this video, I came across it in a Subaru group on fb. I think if you would have included some b roll it would have really brought it to the next level. Like photos as you bring up the chassis & models. There’s only so much you could say in 15minutes but a couple important pieces of info you missed was the engine change in 06 for the wrx, which was used all the way up to 14. Also the big brakes on the hawkeye which was not used for any other model year. Keep it up tho, you got potential.

    • @Smeedia

      Only could have shot B roll with the VA 😫 good points. When they swapped the WRX from the 2.0 to the 2.5 and the 4/2 pot calipers on the WRX TR edition. Appreciate the support! 😁

    So for a 2015+ sti Intelligent mode is the most "realistic" throttle response in correlation to actual pedal input?
    Also does Intelligent mode restrict power such as boost compared to the other modes?

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great questions, but im not 100% sure on intelligent mode when I spoke with Chris (The Tuner for Surgline Tuning) I only asked about the Sport and Sport Sharp. But I believe that it limits throttle to a lower percentage of actual input so you cant actually hit target boost of 16PSI on the factory map

  • @CosineHyperbolic
    @CosineHyperbolic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hate to be that guy, but could you help me narrow things down? After deciding on a manual sedan with AWD, I've spent a ton of time further narrowing down to the VA chassis WRX, but I'm pretty stuck on what year, and whether to go with a WRX or STI.
    This would be my daily driver with visits to the mountains in mind; I make a hobby out of everything though, and am definitely interested in casual rally-esque fun in snow/dirt environments.
    What's most present in my mind is that I think I like the low-RPM boost of the WRX's twin scroll which initially meshed with the idea that I would go the cheaper/simpler WRX route and just tune/upgrade incrementally- but apparently the WRX engine (boost pressure) has less room for tuning compared to the STI (lower pressure).
    So, any input at all? :)
    Thanks in advance!

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would suggest the WRX in that case, better fuel economy, just as much fun, good in multiple terrain environments with the appropriate tires. Better low end power for city driving and with a tune you can get better top end out of the car as well. Also cheaper for the car and insurance 😁

    • @CosineHyperbolic
      @CosineHyperbolic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Smeedia Thanks for the input! I forgot to add: I know you mentioned 2015 having a "weird lookin head unit"- can you elaborate on what you mean? Also you recommend 2016+, but most of the amenities you listed coming from that year aren't too important to me- is there really pretty much no other differences?
      I've been looking for a database specifying the differences between each year, but every source seems to treat 2014-current WRXs as the same.

    Gd is a better track car. It's smaller, lighter, less bs to deal with, and honestly more nimble.
    GR is a jack of all trades, but a master at none. It's has good ride, but not really comfortable enough to take on long road trips. It handles well enough on the track and road, It can hall stuff (hatch), it gets decent mpg, and the safety rating is great. Also it's fun to drive until it blows up.
    VA is a great daily, it rides smooth, is extremely comfortable to ride in (those seats though). Unfortunately it's not a good track car, it's much heavier, way too big, and not enough power to really make a difference on the track.
    P. S. The Subaru sti race cars are not anywhere near stock. They use light weight bodies, tube frames, and completely stripped out chassis. Different suspension, engines, wheels, tires, transmissions and so on.
