I bet he didn't imagine when he recorded this that he'd still be playing with Kula Shaker, in a small venue, at the end of January 2023.. and it was a fab gig this evening

I had the same experience with asking to go to boarding school at12 to get away from homefront problems. Where i started playing bass and singing a lot in the school band and l8r in other bands. Music was a positive thing to me all through my life. Thanks for the music Crispian.

I went to Vrindavan, India, this year because of the album K. That was where i found the Hare Krishna movement and how special India is. To me K is one of the best records ever. So much spirituality and emotion there.

I met KS in the high school. The boy sat next to me brought the K CD one day and said "ey, I bought this mistakenly because of the cover but..man, this is great"...We are nearly 40 now, that boy is one of my best friends and we talk about KS and Mills each time we see each other.
God, they are so fck good...

You can't help being born, or to whom you are born to. The problem arises, when those born to the rich and elite, see it as an excuse to claim a sense of privilege over others. This is something Crispian, in all his humility, can never be accuse of. He is everyman.

I seen them last night in Glasgow, honestly a great performance. Been years since I seen them but they really did a great show. Crispian was top and the rest of the band too. Hope this tour and album do well, also I think the new album is a good album 👌

By 1996 several bands like Whale, Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Lenny Kravitz, The B 52s etc was succesful bringing back the 60s pop to life but no one did it as real as KS did. There was a swedish band doing it too, but I can`t remember their name. They had a big hit in the mid 90s.

      Hives?

    • @themaelstromnotebook5418
      @themaelstromnotebook5418 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yeah, 'The Hives' were Swedish, and were around at the same time but didn't hit big (at least in England) 'til the turn of the century... but I only know their first album. It was good, from what I remember of it.
In retrospect, to me it seems Kula Shaker were easily the best of those bands you mention. (Why? Because of their maturity, honesty, and their spirituality). Of the British bands of that time, I'd also put 'The Verve', 'The Charlatans' and 'James' up there. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people just didn't know what to make of KS after the initial media interest wore off... I was prepped for 'K' by getting heavily into the '13th Floor Elevators' just previous to hearing 'K'. I'd found a copy of their 'Best of..' at a stall in Camden and that started me on a whole psych-rock adventure.
As you say, there was a lot of 60s inspired guitar bands around in the 90s but KS were deeper, and they had a broader ambition when it came to lyrics (proved by the second record?)

Kula Shaker's "K" is one of my favorite Britpop albums ever. The fact they never reached it's level of success shows how important John Leckie was as producer

Saw Ravi Shankar with Alla Rakka, sorry for mispronounced name . It was in Antwerp, it was in the 1980's early 90s. Magical ,beautiful and profoundly spiritual.

At 36:55 Crispian pretty much names what was first known as 'The Illuminati' in the early youtube days, and now has been popularised as 'the deep state'. Prophetic then? Given this doc was made back in 2006.
I remember reviewing 'K' for a student newspaper (very favourably) in Staffordshire back in '96. In the long-term it seems patently obvious this band are criminally underrated. Looking forward to the new record this year... and hopefully I will get to see them live after all this time!

What a wonderful person and a wonderful, verrrry good band! But is it just me or was Crispian a tad depressed or down at that point in time (2006)...? Hope I'm wrong, I wish the Kula's nothing but the absolute best.

For such a bright boy obviously overflowing with creativity and friends in high places I wonder why he lost control of the band ? For instance that awful zombie video that he seems to have been totally unaware of ?
Perhaps it was the age old substance abuse schtik ?

You mean the "30" badge on his guitar? this is the Aum or Om sign, it´s the sound of a spiritual symbol, often seen Buddhism and Hinduism.
