Hey Everyone! 🌟 We have surpassed our goal! I just wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you who donated to my tree removal fundraiser. Your generosity and support mean the world to me. Thank you for being such an amazing part of this journey! I've disabled the donate function on the page, but you can still visit the page to see how much we raised. The donations that went above and beyond the original $2000 goal will go towards my emergency fund.🙏💚

I'm probably going to be the bad person here, and I'm not perfect either. but at some point you have to say enough is enough. Your kids are old enough to understand that you can't afford to give allowance, to go out to eat, go to the movies. They will understand. It's your perception. I'm the future, you will be able to give them more, but right now, you have other priorities.

Jennifer.... thank you for being so transparent!!! You have no idea how relatable you are... i have been a single mom from the time my son was 6, and my daughter was 8, (they are now 25 and 22) and i was broke, but i kept the house as i wanted to keep everything as stable as possible for my children... i won't lie it was tough, but i worked hard, and thank goodness i had support from my family and church family... but with love and hard work, you, too, will get through this too... love your videos... you got this!!! ❤❤❤

I'm also glad you noted, because my first thought when you said $66 dollars more to lease was that that only is correct if you have ZERO more car repairs for the next two years. Which is, unlikely. You're doing it Jennifer. One day at a time, the journey of learning is an important one. ❤

    Hi Jennifer,
First off, deep breath, you're doing great! I admire your resourcefulness in this difficult time.
As far as leasing goes, I have had a really positive experience with leasing. I leased a car and at the end, I was able to get a great deal to purchase it at the end (good interest, etc.). I wouldn't go into this thinking you are going to be "screwed over", I think at the end, if you like this car, you can work out a good deal to purchase/finance it and hopefully be in a better spot financially. I really admire your perseverance.
I watched a video by Ramit Sethi (finance guy) who talks about the benefits of renting vs homeownership. One thing he said really resonated with me as a renter who is pressured a lot by others to buy a home... "your rent is the MOST you will ever pay for your living arrangements (not including utilities of course), your mortgage is the MINIMUM you will pay for your living arrangements". Just something to think about.

I feel you Jennifer. In May someone vandalized my car and my part, the deductible, was $500. The total cost to fix was over $3000. Yesterday I had to take it in for a check engine light. They told me it needed $2500 worth of work. I said what absolutely needs to be done now. It cost me $1265. I didn't have it. My sweet daughter helped me out. Right now, I'm thinking, I'm retired. Do I actually need a car? It's rough. I just want you to feel you're not alone, even if it can't actually make you feel better. I do pray things will improve for you. You absolutely have a great, positive attitude and I love listening to you.

Oh Jennifer! What a week you have had. Something to also think about with the $66 difference is now you are not responsible for paying for those general maintenance things. You could even think of it as a sinking fund, you just don't get to borrow from it in a time of need. However, I did want to mention that you may also have a higher insurance payment for this vehicle with it being newer. Just something to keep in mind before the next budget! Overall, I think you made the best decision for your current situation. Author Emily P Freeman has a book and podcast titled "Next Right Thing" I try to use this phrase as a mantra for life. We don't always know if the decision is the "best" long term, however, if we make a decisions that are the "Next Right Thing" for our current season of life then hopefully we can be a little more at peace with our decision making skills. Hopefully, with the new Budget Mom workbooks and the new year coming sales will pick up as well which may just help bridge the gap! Keep your head up sister!

You forgot to add interest over the 2-year term of the $4,000 months hat you would have to borrow to pay for the car repairs. That could easily be $66 per month so I think you are doing the right thing. It is scary especially when you are trying to get out of debt.
Keep going - you are doing a great job and inspiring so many folks out here in cyber land!

Long time viewer, however, I don't post comments often. I agree with you "you can't outbudget life." I was in a similar situation 5+ years ago and made a similar tough decision to leave my 10 month school district job which I loved for a full-time year round job. Seriously tough decision, however, it was the right financial decision for me. Make the right decisions for you and your financial situation, you got this Jennifer.
On a side note - working a full-time year round job has helped my financial situation tremendously. To paraphrase Dave Ramsey "it sure is easier to dig yourself out of a financial hole when you have a bigger shovel with medical and dental benefits."

Jennifer! There are so many things i wanna say about this video but first and foremost, you are an amazing role model. Going thru the budgeting process, being volunerable as hell and YOU KEEP SHOWING UP! That's what people need to see not many sinking funds someone can stuff, or challenges can be completed. The grind when shit is hard & youre in the hard but you will get thru it! I dont think renting throwing away money at all, is it difficult knowing its not truly mine, of course but when things break im not responsible & if someone is always in the position of more month than money that asset quickly becomes a liability. Im hoping your car insurance might come down a little bit trading in to a newer vehicle (without knowing what your prior coverages were & newer doesnt always mean cheaper) but im hoping for you. Btw idt you mentioned what you got just that it was bigger. The tree will soon be a distant (nightmare) memory. Hopefully its not insanely expensive to remove. The email from county clerk was so nice. I was nervous you were gonna say she was condscending or just unhelpful and rude. So pleasently surprised to hear otherwise. Chin up you got this!

Jennifer... I am 52 and still trying to figure it out. I am thinking you are right sometimes it is an income problem. But also think about if loan #2 wasn't there any more. That money would almost be your car payment. Loan #2 is not forever. Neither is your debt. I have loan #1 and Loan #2. Both of which are ridiculous. Loan #2 for me $188 a week(April payoff) ND loan #1 $191 a month. Not to mention $584 car payment.

My home is not an investment. It’s my house. Keeps me warm and dry and safe place to live. I have $60k + in repairs that I need to do to my home. I can’t afford to do this and no idea if I can refinance. For me, I am stuck in my home because rent is astronomical! Jennifer I am so sorry to hear about the car! I am not sure about the US but here in the UK once your car is out of warranty then you do not take it to the dealership, they charge a lot more than an independant shop. Always get a second opinion, if you can, at an independant car repair place. Dealerships also want to sell you another car, that is where they make money flipping cars. I was quoted £3,000 by my dealership for work to my car, took it to an independant and it cost £500 and a lot of the work was not required that they had quoted. Leasing is ok and it is possible to lease a second hand car - they will always try and upsell you to a new car. Re owning vs renting a home - when you retire it makes a big difference if you own your home (no payments) or have to keep paying rent, something to consider.

You're doing the best as you can be. Thats the real you like most of us. Things are expensive and nothing is luxury to us anymore. I want to bring this as suggested is to search several townhomes or apartments and find out the actual cost per month compared to what you're paying for mortgage. In my area in Michigan for two bedroom, 1 bath apartment cost over $1300 per month. If its more than your mortgage, maybe consider roommate to pay portion of your half of mortgage. Also pet monthly fee and rental insurance. May want to work with some numbers for comparison and see which you're comfortable paying before deciding to sell the house. Hang in there, you've got this!

Hey Jennifer! It sounds like Murphy’s Law has definitely knocked on your door and has moved right into your house with all the bad things that keep going on and I’m sorry this is happening but definitely there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as long as you keep digging your way out, you’re gonna get there and you’re gonna shine on the other side so keep up the great work And keep positive and I know that’s hard to say but at the same time you’ve got this! I always tell people the smaller the house the smaller the bills! I will be 48 years old and December and I lost my eyesight starting in my late 30s and now I have no site left I’ll be 48 years old in December and I’ve never owned my own house yet but that doesn’t mean I’m not going to understand your struggles with money or having a really hard time over here as well! The rising cost and housing, groceries, inflation has just literally Done damage to so many people it’s insane! I am going to start working on funding a source for a tiny house. I’ve never wanted to go big and I’ve always wanted to stay small because my approaches always been the KISS approach which to me stands for keep it simple and successful. It’s always been my motto and now I’m bringing it forward! You are a great mother to two wonderful little boys although you’re in a hard situation at the moment you’re gonna get around it and I always say there’s always a pot of gold on the other side that pot of gold may not always be an amount of money, but it’s gonna be something shiny and it’s gonna be something well worth it! Always supporting and watching you’re doing a great job just know you have to keep positive and take all those negative thoughts and put them in the trashcan outside wheel them to the front and let them go on trash day

I'm so sorry you're dealing with another financial hit. I'm in the minority in the budgeting community here that loves credit cards LOL. I use them to my advantage to travel hack and earn points I can use to buy big "want" items. For instance this year I saved up my Amazon CC points to treat myself to a new dyson. I always pay them off every month, but I also know that should I need them for an emergency I have a backup. For instance, last year my rav4 died unexpectedly and cost about $3,000 to repair which I was able to charge and then was able to move some money around in my savings/sinking funds to cover it. But it gave me the month to make things work/save. For what it's worth, the dealership garage was 2x the price of other garages. I love my dealership and have had wonderful experiences there but the garage is marked up extensively. Something to keep in mind for the future. All this to say, please think about getting a new CC for future emergencies! It doesn't mean you have to use it, but it's a nice safety net to have while you work on building up savings. I'm so glad you're a fighter! You've got this!!!

We all wake up daily to the unknown. I had the same thing happen to my old car but I waited 6 month because I had a 2nd car for backup but it had no heat. I get in my newer car and make my payments timely. I gladly make car and insurance payments with no regrets. Keep up your mindful spending you will get there my friend. I’ve been a Single mom for 40 years. ❤#2 boys for life.

One of the best feelings in the world is having the money to pay for any crisis that pops up. I lived on the edge in my younger days and it was so stressful. Now I can easily pay for a car repair or even just buy a brand new car for cash. I can replace any appliance that breaks. I can run off to London for the weekend. Money is a tool. I would think you would regret not having enough to meet your living standards in retirement when you forgo making money when the opportunity is here. I sometimes wish I had worked more in my 20s so I could have started saving earlier. I was stupid and thought I deserved to have lots of free time.

Hi Jennifer, you are doing the best you can and you don’t have to be so hard on yourself. Remember this s the beginning of post divorce life and it’s hard to navigate all these changes. But you have a college degree maybe even a masters, you could make a lot more money outside of education try looking into Human Resources at a hospital or a on- line executive assistant. Let me know if this would be interesting to you.

Maybe selling your home would be enough to fully pay a small 2 bedroom apartment, with no mortgage payments you would be able to keep up with the maintenance maybe is something to take into consideration. I do live with a low income, but I have a fully paid home and I can tell you that makes a lot of difference in my budget ❤

Jennifer #1 I think your hair this way is fantastic, it looks so good on you. Secondly, I think you did the right think on leasing the car. No guarantee if you fixed the old one that it would not have had other issues. I too believe in GAP insurance. I’m 70 and live in an apartment because I choose to. The apartment can be temporarily if you want it to be. There will always be other houses to buy if that’s what you choose down the road. It too me til my late 60’s to realize I really don’t want much, just a nice place to live and transportation that is safe. It is such a good feeling when happiness comes from the little things in life, like going to the movies or spending time with a friend. I still like to shop but nothing like I once did. I will donate to the tree removal and if you have extra, why not take that and enjoy a peaceful Christmas with your boys.

Have you tried to call a lawn care service sometimes they are tree cutters too, and you can also find people that are tree cutters that do charity work and help people in your situation. I don’t know if you have it in your area or the surrounding area, but that would be a good place to look, I understand about your car problem. My air conditioning went out in mine and it was $1700 for a new air condition motor for my car. I like to have lost it. I paid it off. I have paid. It off

Mama, do not lease! They will charge you penalties for breaking it early, I wouldn’t trust that they said you can get out of it early. Can you for the time being get rides into work with a co-worker? When I was in my 20’s and a single mom I was in an accident and my car was totaled. If it wasn’t for a couple co-workers offering to car-Poole I don’t know what I would have done; it was an hour and half each way!
What is wrong with the car? How about reaching out to local mechanics because they are normally cheaper… parts vs. labor cost- dealerships normally charge the high end side of labor so please do more research!

Also I’ll be donating on your go fund me, I suggest prioritizing the vehicle above the tree especially since going to city councils takes longer so more time to save for that vs. vehicle repairs.

Jennifer, I agree when it rains it pours. But I think things are going to get better for you. With your new job, and when you get David paid off. I heard Biden was forgiving more student loan debt, would you qualify for this? Just imagine if you didn’t have student loan debt, you could slowly pay off the credit cards you would have so much more wiggle room and do things so you could enjoy life a bit more. Like you said it’s going to take a few months for you to figure out how to budget this new income.

Cars are a terrible expense. Leasing may be the way to go. My girl friend did this with two different vehicles, then when she needed a new car a good friend showed her that she would lose money so she is now in the financial position to pay car payments. Are there any full-time teaching positions open? Having a teaching certificate is a golden opportunity to make money. I do not know if your school district pays teachers in the summer. Our local school district does. I would trade the stress of full-time teaching to get some financial stability. Good luck!

Hi Jennifer. I hate that you are going through this, but I know the perseverance that you have will get you over the hump.
Please reconsider downsizing to a smaller house or condo as opposed to renting. You may be sticker shocked when you see the price of rent.
The HELOC may not be a bad idea considering the interest you are paying on the credit cards.

I leased with Nissan for two different cars and I never had a problem with turning the car back in and getting nickled and dimed. I think the rule they told me if the damage is larger than a quarter then you will get charged for it. It is a hard decision to make when there is a 4000$ repair hanging over your head.

Hi Jennifer! I’m so sorry so many things are happening at one time. Make sure you don’t have any $50 dollars bills laying around, those are bad luck 🫤. I have leased my last 7 cars and I love leasing ❤. I like getting a new car every couple of years. This too shall pass. I would definitely think about getting a different job. You made the right decision! A safe, reliable vehicle is worth it!! That $60 something dollar difference once you factor in maintenance etc also won’t be as bad.

  • @plantobebooked-Alicia_Allen

I think you made the right decision. By paying the $4000 to fix the car you now took off the value of the car. Lets say before it broke down it was worth $8000(I don't know, I am just doing numbers), now by putting $4000 worth of work on it and depreciation you will not get your money back later if you sold it. I always say never put money on a car for repairs unless the value of the car if more than buying a new or new(used) car. It happened at the wrong time but you did the right thing. Having a reliable car is the best thing! You don't need that stress. This is piece of mind. Stay positive. Things will look up!

Hi Jennifer, I'm glad to hear that the city worker was so kind in her reply to you and that there are options!
I think you did the right thing in leasing a vehicle. There is no reason to start putting money into a vehicle that may well have another issue within a short time. I lease a vehicle. I haven't gotten to the end of my lease but I'll worry about that when it comes, lol. For the extra $66.00 a month, the peace of mind will be worth it:)
You're right about the selling of your house. Just because you can afford the monthly payment doesn't mean that you can afford the upkeep. And selling would allow you to have a cushion. You've got this!!

Question: If you sell your home, would you have money left after splitting it with David?
Maybe enough to payoff your debt and have an emergency fund. If you move out to an apartment with no debt, maybe you have more money for the rent.
