    You MUST watch the Official video, even if you don't record it or post. They took 5 yeara to make it honor and respect Queen. Dr. Brian May from Queen posted it on his social media with one word: Enjoy!
    There is also a Behind the Scenes video for Bohemian Rhapsody. Kevin thought they should wear helmets with the moving coutch. Filmed Midnight to 6am. It would help you understand how the group works and why the crowd reacts during a Live Concerts. It has Avi's special talents as Avi was 2011-2017. Matt joined 2017--present as a guest star until their contract renewed and featured in Amazing Grace.
    Have fun in the rabbit hole

    The rhythm section is composed of percussion plus bass. Kevin does percussion; Matt does bass. Yes, Matt can beatbox, though not as well as Kevin (who may be the best beatboxer in the world), but most of the time when it looks like Matt is beatboxing that's because his bass line is completely synchronized with the percussion line; it's one of the reasons Kevin's "drums" sound so full.

      Perfection!

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@MrsRealistic It's REALLY easy to miss. When you hear a song with Avi you know immediately when the bass line starts; doesn't matter who is soloing or what a critical moment it is in the song - Avi starts singing the bass line and the listener pauses the music, says "Ooh! That bass!" 🤩, and rewinds a few seconds so they can hear it again. But Matt is more subtle. When he solos he's just as flamboyant as any of them, but when he's doing rhythm he manages to make it just a perfect part of the beat Kevin is laying down. That requires an awesome level of talent, and Matt doesn't receive sufficient recognition for it.

  • @ShinyElfriend
    @ShinyElfriend 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Matt Sallee replaced Avi Kaplan as the bass in 2017. He did some sound effects in this one, yes, but Kevin Olusola is the beatboxer (and tenor singer and occasionally cellist). Matt has a versatile voice and can sound quite classically trained sometimes, and more R&B soulful at other times. He has a big voice, a big range, and a big personality, bringing a lot of joy to their performances He doesn't quite have the Earth shaking profundo voice of Avi, but he is equally talented and blends so beautifully with the group. Mitch Grassi didn't have the mustache just for Bohemian Rhapsody, of course, but it is certainly is appropriate! He changes up his look a lot, and went through a rather long (for him) mustache phase the last few years. He seems to be bearded with a neatly trimmed scruff at the moment, and I really like it. This was their first concert post-covid after unfortunately having to cancel many tour dates. This was also Kirstin's first show since becoming a Mom. They were all so excited to be back performing live and felt honored to play the Hollywood Bowl in it's 50th season.

      It was their first show after Kirstin's daughter was born, but was not their first post-covid concert. They had the Evergreen Christmas tour in end of November/December 2021. This 2022 Hollywood Bowl performance was the next after Evergreen, and then the 2022 Christmas tour followed after that. They toured a lot in 2023, making up the dates that had been cancelled for covid. Now much less touring this year as they take a break from all the busyness of 2022-2023. Kirstin just got married, Matt and Sarah are expecting a daughter over the summer, and Scott and Mark just released a children's book with accompanying song.

    Great pick. The 2022 Hollywood Bowl videos are great because of excellent videography and better sound engineering. You can also get Hallelujah from it. See also their 2023 Christmas Concert and MTv’s PopSpring 2016. Avi and Matt are both excellent but Avi was classically trained as a basso profundo and Matt grew up singing in his Dad’s church. They have different styles (at lease with Pentatonix - Avi has moved onto something different): Avi had attacks sharp enough to punch holes and Matt has a bit of velvet fog (Mel Torme reference).

    So Matt Sallee (pronounced suh-lee) had been with PTX for five years at this point. I think it’s a mistake to compare him to Avi Kaplan: different backgrounds; different strengths; different training but both excellent in their own right.
    The youngest of the group, Matt’s a product of the Berklee School of Music and grew up singing in his father’s church, so he brings that vibe. Avi gave up an opera slot as a basso to join PTX.

    Pentatonix Bohemian Rhapsody Insights:
    So, some things to know about this cover and video: -It took PTX years to get the arrangement to where they felt they could do the original masterpiece justice. -The cover, and especially the video, was meant to be an homage to Queen.
    Some of the moments paying respect were:
    1.The mono-recording of the line "easy come, easy go" followed by the panning of the voices from left to right on the line "little high, little low" (which is how the original was recorded),
    2. Obviously the flashlights being used to mimic the lighting on the operatic part of the original video,
    3. The four shooting stars to represent the four members of Queen, as well as acknowledge the fact that Dr. Brian May is an astrophysicist,
    4. The overhead shot of them lying on the couch is to represent the Sheer Heart Attack album cover.
    The megaphone was just a prop. It is not needed to reproduce the electric guitar distortion. -PTX can, and does, perform this live with no backing track...something even Queen and the Great Freddie Mercury could not do.
    Freddy once said he didn't care what people did with his music as long as they "...don't make it boring, darling!", so I think he would absolutely approve.
    They were indeed on an actual road and luckily, there actually is a behind the scenes for the making of this one that you can watch! The link is: th-cam.com/video/Q8ugJnIG_Lk/w-d-xo.html
    Also when Brian Mays heard it... he posted it on his web site with the word "ENJOY”.
    The overall video--with the "living room" and couch--is an homage to Pentatonix's own journey as a group. They lost their record deal right after winning the Sing Off and moving to LA, so they started putting out videos on TH-cam, performing covers. They would sit on the couch in Kevin (beatboxer) and Avi's (bass) living room and just record themselves on Mitch's (counter tenor who took the lead on this song) iPad. Some of their earliest videos went viral and they eventually were able to secure a new deal, record an EP, go on tour, release chart-topping albums and win three Grammy awards...so they moved out of the living room and down this new, unknown road. At the end of the day, though, they're still the same choir-nerds they've always been; just happy to sit together on a couch and sing.

    I don't know what drives Mitch's hair (including facial hair) and fashion choices. I DO know that Mitch isn't the only person singing Freddie Mercury's role in this; Matt, Scott, and Kirstin each have a turn (even more so in the official recording, where they don't have a whole choir backing them up), and even Kevin gets in on the final "Anywhere the wind blows."
    I also know that Mitch was born just eight months after Freddie's death, and several people have voiced a suspicion that he might have been a month premature, because they think he's the reincarnation of Freddie.

    • @MrsRealistic
      @MrsRealistic  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I noticed that near the end that Scott was singing the Freddy part...I was thinking in the beginning that since Mitch looked so much like Freddie he'd have that whole part... but as usual, I spoke too soon 😄 And he might just be the reincarnation of Freddie... it all makes so much sense! Freddie was taken too soon and had more music to make!

    • @margretrosenberg420
      @margretrosenberg420 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MrsRealistic If you believe in reincarnation (which I don't, but not pushing my beliefs on anyone else) it makes perfectly good sense. Mitch doesn't even have to have been born prematurely; who's to say at what point in pregnancy that transfer happens?
      But Mitch isn't an exact copy of Freddie. What was Freddie's range? I don't think anyone is sure, except that it was huge. We do know the size of Mitch's range, though; Mitch has a range of six octaves plus one note. Can Mitch reach the lowest note Freddie could? I don't know for sure, but I doubt it. And I'm not dissing Mitch when I say that; I agree with Shawn Stockman - Mitch has "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life."
      I'm not one of Freddie's biggest fans. I recognize his genius, but most of his recordings have too much loud instrumentation for me to enjoy properly. So it may be a failure of imagination on my part; you tell me. Can you imagine Freddie singing Mitch's part in "The Prayer"? I can't, and that song, IMO, gives us the quintessential recording of Mitch Grassi.

  • @danielcarter837
    @danielcarter837 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Mitch might be the reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. Freddie died in November 1991 and Mitch was born in July 1992. He can also grow the Freddie mustache. It is so close to matching it is kinda creepy. PTX also did Somebody to Love on a Queen special on ABC three or four years ago. Mitch had the Freddie mustache when they did the special.

      Verklempt ( I think that's how it's spelled in English vernacular) is now adopted by many people. It's even in the Merriam Webster dictionary as meaning:
      Overwhelmed, flustered, nervous or excited, overjoyed, happy

    • @MrsRealistic
      @MrsRealistic  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's often used as a way to say "choked up or emotional." Most English speaking people don't use it...you'll find funny SNL skits with Mike Myers when he does "Coffee Talk" speaking with a "New York" accent. It's really more of a Yiddish or Hebrew word.
