      Clients too. Too many times, a client asks me for a taper and what they really wanted was a fade. Actually, just yesterday a client asked me for a taper with a top trim. Then I clarified it by asking if he just wanted to fade the sideburns and neck. He said “Yeah like a low fade”. Now it would have been easy to figure out what he wanted if his hair was previously cut like that, but no he had gentlemen’s cut look. I just gave him a low taper fade. Not sure if that’s exactly what he wanted but oh well 🤷🏻‍♂️

    When you ask a barber for a "low taper faed, outline, clean up aka shape up, beard trim and a beard fade.
    And that barber doesn't know what you're talking about?
    That's when you get up and walk out, saying don't worry about it. It's all good.

    I'm a unisex hairdresser, never been trained in barbering. We have very different methods of cutting. As a bloke, I like to venture into a bit of barbering, much more so than most of my female colleagues. I found this interesting and informative. I'd also like clients to know that barbering is quite different to hairdressing. If you want a super sharp taper or fade or a crispy line up.... the barber is the place to go.
    Myself, I will always try to accommodate any client and do what they ask to the best of my abilities. I would love to be as good at barbering as I am at hairdressing.

    Thank you for posting your definitions of a taper and a fade. I'm one of those old barbers whose definition is a little different than yours. This is my definition and then some explanations:
    The term "taper" had been used in traditional men's barbering long before the term "fade" which was introduced to define a specific type of "taper". That said, a taper is the generic term for both.
    The main difference between the two are the tools used and the length of hair intended or amount of skin shown. A classic taper retains length while graduating from the longer lengths at the crest of the head to the shorter lengths at the nape and the sideburns. The tools used scissors/shears, combs, clippers, outliners. The scissors/shears are probably the most important tool when creating a taper. The skills involved include club cutting (scissor over knuckle), scissor over comb, clipper over comb and general direct clipper cutting. Is it possible to taper hair without using clippers? Yes, most true tapers can be done with scissors. In general and until the term "fade" was introduced into modern men's barbering. There were high, medium and low tapers. A high taper from back then would be closer to a medium low fade today. A medium or low taper always had hair left in place, especially in the sideburn area. Fades are a new, extreme form of tapering that rely on clippers and foils in order to remove the greatest amount of hair, often just leaving skin. We used to talk about the "graduation" in tapers, today I talk about "transitions" in fades.
    Your example was a good one from a modern perspective. You are a young barber who grew up with fading as the norm and you are trying to establish a definition of a taper that works for you. The back taper you did was very good. I would call it a short taper. The side area was not tapered, it was faded. I would have expected more length left on the side and a sideburn retained. The work you did was excellent. I think you took on a difficult topic and did good job with it. I hope you don't mind the long-winded opinion of an older barber. Max

    • @AndysCuts
      @AndysCuts  5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Thanks, man! The terms are very confusing. I thought by separating the two words it would be easier to understand. In reality taper=fade. But that just makes things even more confusing doesn’t it? So let’s just say taper is side burns and neck line and fade is all around.

    • @FlatMax2
      @FlatMax2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Andy Tran Not a bad idea. The art behind both is a smooth, seamless finish with the hair getting progressively shorter. That’s the geometry behind tapers and fades.

      Maxwell Smart I completely agree! A fade and a taper are the same thing other than a fade being shorter. I’ve been cutting hair for 23 years now and when I started it was called a taper. The term fade was primarily used when cutting African American clients.

    Being a visual learner, seeing how a taper is where the side burns are and a fade is all the way around the head. Also making sure you check your work is very important.

    The main reason why people come into a barbershop and ask for a taper and mean a fade is because of the way the terms were used and how they have evolved over time, back in the day the word " Taper "ment from long to short near the bottom. This was a very general idea of what the word taper was ment for, before there was a real concept of the "fade" in the black styled barber shops the words that were used for what we know of as a "Taper" Was called a "temp fade" or Temple fade" meaning the fade transition stayed in the temple area of the head on both sides and the back lower neck area and slowly evolved to the term "taper around all regions. The term " TAPER" to describe a "FADE" is still used in salons and older styled Barbershops but things are beginning to change as we correct the terms and make them more known, so its not neither the barber or the clients fault because of the different areas and environment that each barbershop is in can result in the way things are called, as barbers we have to make sure that we ask the necessary questions to the clients to make sure we both have a clear understanding of what we are wanting/ providing for the service. In modern day, a " taper is a short fade on the side burn area and neck area and a (low,med, or high, fade is considered to be all the way around the head) this also means the fade can be a skin or shadow fade, which means the fade can start at the skin and blend up or the fade can start with a lower amount of hair and gradually go up. Skin or Shadow. For anyone that my question my words, i am a licensed barber out of the state of Alaska. Im in this career field and i can say ive built a good understanding of what this art form is truly about, feel free to check my work on instagram if anyone wants to proof check me @marcus_barber907

    Thank you! You explained that perfectly. I have taken my son to a lot of places the last couple of years now looking for a barber/stylist. One that takes care of their customers. One that pride themselves in their abilities to give their customers an experience they look forward too. I have asked so many what the difference was and none of them actually answered my question. So I have come to the point where I am willing to go to school to learn how to cut hair to be able to give my son an awesome experience and whatever he decides to get down the road. You have made things a lot easier actually knowing the difference. And now that I do I know exactly what I am lookin* for and at when it’s being done. Thank you again. Keep up the Great Work!

Ive had to explain it the difference several times.. sometimes i dont say anything and just do the taper and show them at the end. 99% of the time the younger generation really goes for it and they love it. Most of my older clientele dont go for it if they want it they ask for it.. i love what i do just wanna step up the game
