This song is metaphorical. It talks about the motherland and the people the are immigrands and is related to the genocide of the Pontians and Minor Asian Greeks during the destruction of Minor Asia in 1922 when people had to leave their homes to escape Ottoman Turks. Klavdia has a Pontic heritage. She is Pontian Greek. But due to the political rule she has to make it that ambiguous. But it can be taken also like you said in a literal manner as a miroloi( funeral lament) for a little kid

“Starry Eyes” (Αστερομάτα) is a poignant and emotional song by Klavdia, representing Greece’s cultural and historical legacy. The song draws inspiration from the struggles of refugees and the profound pain of being forced to leave one’s homeland, particularly referencing the Pontic Greek genocide and its impact on generations.
The title, “Starry Eyes,” symbolizes hope, guidance, and resilience. The lyrics revolve around themes of maternal love, longing for home, and the enduring strength found in heritage and memory. With lines like “Sweet mother, don’t shed a tear” and “Through the storms, I’ll find my way,” the song expresses the universal human experience of seeking solace and belonging amidst adversity.
The music blends traditional Greek elements with contemporary influences, creating a rich, emotional soundscape. Klavdia’s heartfelt performance enhances the song’s depth, delivering a message of hope and perseverance that resonates far beyond language barriers.
It’s a tribute to the strength of those who carry their history within them while navigating a path toward a brighter future.

At the same time, this is a piece of art so it can be left open to the interpretation of the audience, depending on their own experiences. Art resonates with people in different ways.

@ agreed tho it’s not supposed to take it lightly. I don’t believe that the production expects to have a crowd burst into tears but on the other hand I don’t believe they expect a crowd that doesn’t feel a thing for it’s content..another thing is Klavdia is Pontic, she wrote it together with Arcade and she put on this her special and personal experience of the tragedy the song hides behind the lyrics.

I do appreciate that you took time to get the lyrics of this great song. You now know how every Greek feels listening to it. Many Greeks have been immigrants in the past, all my grandparents, too. Plus the lyrics bring to some of us flashback of a recent tragic event.

That's a song that speaks to the depth of Greek history, the suffering, the strong bonds and the rich emotional world Greeks carry due to their history - in this case with a focus on immigration and the loss of the loved ones. As you say, there can be a literal meaning to it too, about the physical loss of a child. I've never felt like this for a Eurovision song before, and rarely feel this way with modern Greek songs. As a Greek myself, it makes me proud. I wish Klavdia best of luck. I am happy with the song regardless of how it goes, I just hope it's the chosen one.

Exactly. My grandgrandparents so Klavdias, both from Asia Minor ,Greek Pontus, were genocided during A WW and immigrated by force and death to their motherland since antiquity, Greece.More than 353.000 died in a freaky way, among them thousands of children .. Greek Pontians from all over the world, their decanters, never forget, and still fight for the recognition of Genocide of Greek Pontians , executed from the Ottoman Empire, also against millions of Armenians. This is a mourning, dedicated to my grand grandparents, dying from hunger and diseases on the ships to Greece, threugh their dead bodies into the see ..😢

@crow22zero Unfortunately most of europeans, do not know many things about the Greeks and how they suffered because of the turks first and italians/Germans later. Most of europeans know to negatively criticize the Greeks and their financial status, without knowing any of the problems and bullying Greece received. Also Noone knows how many things in Greece are good.
Everyone talks only about the economy and the bad small Greece...
      The easy way as always....

You got it right at some point!
The truth is that only Greeks can fully understand the lyrics of this song. I don't know if I should say it, but the song doesn't talk about the pain of the refugee, but about all the genocides that happen in this cruel world, about all the mothers who lose their children in war. We have singled it out for this song, because it speaks and touches our soul. It is something like a prayer to the Gods for a better world.😢

It's about the bond between motherland and estranged, to be far away from your home and the same time so near to your roots!
When you loose your home and from the other hand when you separate your person no matters the capacity, is like a death.
The sweet-bitter burden that someone carries abroad.
But when you speak about poetry, because this song is pure art you can translate to so many interpretations.

This is a song about being away from your native land. I can be about refugees, it can be about immigrants who miss their homeland. I think this one was probably written having Pontos Genocide in mind.. .but it also speaks in the hearts of Greeks who had to leave their country and go to work abroad.
This is another song with a similar subject, a very popular one, a traditional one, coming from Minor Asia, in this video sang by one of the best Greek Singers. th-cam.com/video/DQhHJ3euyQE/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Aegipan80

For many cultures, the soul is a boat sailing to the stars and the stars are the eyes of the gods (or the holes from where gods watch people). Asteromata means she who has starry eyes implying a female, divine, goddish being. You may also interpret this song as a dialogue between us and our divine part, the part that has no body, flies like a bird, has no fear of the fire (not afraid of earth, fire and air) and is a boat between the sky and the earth. So the mother (we) asks the divine child of her to come back to remind her of her forgotten wings (she has also wings - wow). That's why many people who don't understand the lyrics felt like they were in a church, like this is a kind of prayer. For Greek people, the words chosen for the song (for instance tzivaeri, rizomou) are connected profoundly with their mother land, are written deep in their hearts and can't by easily translated in English (tzivaeri is the precious, the treasure, the beloved, it is an old word of Asia minor, of our grandparents).

  • @fullranger3435

The right translation is "wings", not "feathers" (it's the same word in greek). The song is not about death directly, it's about the parting of a mother from her beloved child during forced migration, after ethnic cleansing and unwanted population deportation. Although cleansing/deportation is not directly mentioned, it is implied by the longing for "the soil(s) of our roots". Probably inspired by the genocide of the greeks of Pontus (northen Anatolia) in the beginning of the 20th century, but it can also resonate with any forced migration situation. Death, is also not mentioned but not excluded either (as noone ever really knows what will happen to those left behind). The song belongs to the genre of greek, folk, lamentation songs, of course upgraded to another level, musically. Yeah, gives some nice chills and goosebumps... Powerful...
