Good video, shoe is my passion. But i would like to make a point. There is no need removing the welt of a shoe unless if it is busted. Removing the welt of a shoe that is in good condition is putting additional holes on side of shoe where welt is stitched. Only remove welt from shoe if it is necessary.

Shoes can be refurbished many times but it can’t be refurbished more than twice if shoe manufacturer keep putting another holes on the side of the shoe where welt is stitched when shoe is sent to be repaired by the shoe manufacturer. No need removing the welt if it is in good condition. All shoes manufactures should look into this. Old cork should be stripped away replaced with new cork and new leather sole and new heel attached and upper refinished.

@@olatusijazz8155 for Blake and such construction types you are correct - for Goodyear, car can be (but isn't always) taken to re-use the original welting holes if they are in good condition so as not to excessively perforate the uppers.

Love your videos. I just bought a pair of Barkers, and wondered if you know much about the quality of their more modern shoes? I bought some Turing Brogues, which are part of their “Barker Tech” range. I am assuming (hoping) that they still use all their traditional methods even on their newer more modern versions.

Hi Allan, thank you very much Sir and anything I may be able to help you with any time will be my pleasure :-) DHL provide us with a great service so delivery if you are not local is no problem any time.
I have visited all of the UK factories we work with including Barker, and the quality is same as it has always been. The Turing you have purchased has the same Goodyear Welted Constructed, but with the added benefit od a padded Tongue, Topline and memory foam removable Insole. This they developed to maximise comfort straight from the box, for most wearers at least :-)

Richard Smith thanks for the quick reply - much appreciated. Do you happen to know what “quality” of leather is used in these specific shoes? I actually phoned Barkers without much luck. All I want to know is whether they use “full grain” leather, or some cheaper cut? Many thanks

@@YerMawsGoatBaws Barker use full grain calf leather for the shoes Turing, and most other lines in their premium and creative collections. There are some corrected grain leathers used, and these are detailed 'High Shine'. Most Uk shoemakers use full grain and corrected grain leathers

Richard and The Shoe Room is great but please, don't let your shoes get refurbished by cobblers who removes a perfectly usable welt, like this guy. The whole point of having goodyear welted shoes/boots is so that you can resole your shoes over and over again without damaging the uppers (removing the welt defeats the point). English shoe manufacturers like Barkers, Loake, Cheaney, Crockett all do these nonsense to shorten the lifespan of your shoes and get you buying a new pair sooner. Using the original last when resoling is also just a marketing "buzzword" as it does absolutely nothing to your shoes if they are only getting resoled. Bring your shoes to a local skilled cobbler who can handstitch a new sole to the old welt of your shoes and your pair will last a lifetime (or as long you take care of the upper).
