Wow, the Renaults were AMC's only chance at a modern car as the Eagle/Concord/Spirit all are basically updates of the AMC Hornet that I believe came out in 1970.

It's amazing how much more appealing Jeep's 1983 lineup is compared to their 2015 lineup. Don't get me wrong, the current Grand Cherokee is a great vehicle, and the current Wrangler is good, but the old vehicles are just so much more appealing.

Seriously? The cars/trucks from the early 80's were all steaming piles of crap! As someone that was of driving age back then, I remember being absolutely disgusted with the garbage that was being offered to consumers... Especially by American car companies. It was a terrible time to be a car enthusiast.
It is the complete opposite today, since quality, variety, horsepower, and capability has never been greater than now. Today is the greatest time to be a car enthusiast!! So, carful what you wish for!

To think if it weren't for AMC our beloved jeeps would have gone out of style. As a owner of a Spirt and Jeeps I can say the 258 motor is one of the best built motor ever.400k miles is nothing to see on one of them motors and still running strong. As ws the little Iron duke 4cyl mad by another company now gone (Pontiac). Strange how the quality car company's went and the umm crap ones lived? make a good reliable car that will last for years and years and put yourself out of business
AMC is also responsible for creating the SUV market,by introducing the 4x4 eagle. The cars were very well built and didn't suffer the quick rusting many other brands had. Sad to see them gone. I would buy the entire range of eagles and jeeps from 1983 and a Spirt,if I had the place to keep them.

I've ridden in a Scrambler, one of my friends in high school had an '82 model. This was on March 5, 2010, so both of us were born several years after AMC folded and anything AMC-built was pretty rare by then. That Scrambler was pretty well-known around the school. There was another guy with a '50 Studebaker there, I got to ride in that one quite a few times in 2009-2010 and it was another of the school's coolest cars. Both of those people graduated a year ahead of me, I don't remember anything quite so awesome in my graduating class. I myself drove... nothing and had no license. I upgraded from nothing to an '08 Honda Accord when I was 19, not that cool but... FREEDOM!

Outside of the Concord 4 door and the Large Renault; which didn't seem to sell well.....AMC had a pretty progressive lineup for 1983. It s a shame quality and other issues relating to AMC history ultimately led them to merge with Chrysler in 1987. I remember a dealer near me even having few gray market R5 Turbos on the lot around this time. It seemed LeCars and Alliances were everywhere.......until things started breaking and the repair bills were astronomical. The Eagle 4x4 wagon was considered pretty upscale back then.

Can't imagine why they used it. The iron duke was a well known piece of garbage.

Dburger62 That's about it though. The Duke was rough, gutless, and severely outdated even when it was new.

Just Here For The TH-cam To me it sounded great, it was economical, and served its purpose well. The Duke has a bad reputation it doesn't deserve in my opinion.

Dburger62 To each their own, we all have an opinion. Sorry if I offended you. On the other hand, I love me the sound of an early Chevy 2.8 V6 even with the bad rep it has.

Was AMC the first to make an AWD sedan? I can't think of another AWD sedan made in the 1970s.

+Skyline Fever Subaru made AWD wagons. i think there was a couple of other forign brands "russian mostly" that did 4x4 cars.
but yeah Eagle may very well be the first 4x4 Sedan.

Ohh to have that Cherokee! Why don't the manufacturers realize there are more than a few of us that want a 2 door and not a 4 door SUV!

Not only that they used the 2.8 liter GM V-6 in the XJ series in 1984-86. My neighbor had a XJ Wagonneer and an S-10 Blazer from 1986 and they both had the same engine.
