As was the case with a Dragon Sherman Firefly model kit, I think it's great that the contributions of Canadian & Polish WWII armour is reflected in the markings that have been chosen here! For those who are just beginning to learn WWII History, they need to know that Canadian and/or Polish divisions performed important roles in the Battle for Sicily, and breaching both the Hitler Line & Gothic Line in Italy. Furthermore, they both played a crucial role in the Allies' victory during the Battle of Normandy after landing at Juno Beach. This included the severe defeat of German forces in the Falaise Pocket...a near-fatal blow to the Germans in western Europe. Afterwards, Canadian & Polish forces continued to push northward along the coast of France & Belgium, and were very involved in the push to capture & protect the vital port of Antwerp, then liberate the Netherlands, then fight their way across the Rhine, then invade northern Germany, and then...a rarely discussed but important mission...the occupation of Denmark after the Germans essentially abandoned it (FYI, Denmark was a country Stalin planned to occupy if the western Allies did not...which would have had huge post-war implications...). Although I am not Polish, I want to enthusiastically highlight the Polish armoured units for their extremely stubborn & brave defence of the 'cork in the neck of the bottle' of the Falaise Gap. Understandably, the Germans threw everything they had at 'the cork', attacking with the best troops & armour they had, from both the inside & the outside of 'the cork' (including some German armoured forces which had snuck out of the pocket before the Poles got there...). For more than 24 hours, Polish infantry & armour were continually attacked, but ultimately, the Poles prevented the Germans from opening up the Falaise Pocket. Once the Canadians arrived (*), the terrible fate of the German forces inside the Falaise Pocket was sealed. (FWIW, I have always said that if the Polish armoured units that sealed the Falaise Pocket had been American, we would have seen at least one movie & one re-make of that move from Hollywood by now! I will encourage anyone who loves WWII History to research what happened!). Of course, the contributions to the western Allied war effort by the French, Brits & Americans was substantial, but the Canadians, Poles, New Zealanders, Aussies, Indians, etc tend to get less recognition, and in some cases, units from Commonwealth nations were added to British & American divisions(**), so fewer people know about the contributions of the smaller nations - hence my missive here! :) (*) Canadian forces were erroneously targeted by U.S. bombers just before the Canadians were set to move towards the opening in the Falaise Pocket. Casualties & losses of equipment were significant, so it took Canadian forces a couple of days to find replacement troops & equipment, then fight their way to 'the cork in the bottle'. However, fortunately for the Allies, Polish armour was already on its way when the Canadians were bombed, so it was up to them to plug the gaps until the Canadians arrived. (**) e.g. FYI, there were quite a few Canadians in the famous American 101st Airborne division, as Canada was one of the first nations to establish Airborne division during the interwar period & had many qualified & experienced 'jumpers' who either volunteered in American & British Airborne forces or were assigned to them as the Allies prepared for D-Day.
