  • In this video I show you how to use cheap LED tea lights and cotton balls to make some really cool flame, explosion, smoke and spell effects for all your favourite wargames. These look great when displaying and photographing your models on some of your terrain, or for representing lasting spells or other things in your games. Great for Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer, 40k, Horus Heresy, Age of Sigmar, Mordheim, Necromunda, Frostgrave etc.

For the drying process, drill a hole in the center of the waste basket, and a piece of plywood or aluminum the same size as the top, then use a long piece of allthread, to put into the drill chuck, then feed through the waste basket and the plywood or whatever, and with the cotton balls in the basket secure everything with the appropriate sized nut then turn on drill and secure the blow dryer so it flows through the waste basket. Mini dryer.

Right on, that really looks good. I like using a glue stick to transfer the light.
I use the little candle lights and some small fiber optic cable to light the stern lanterns on old square rigged sailing ship models. Works great for several reasons. The optic cable can be as long as you want. I can hide the candle under the model pedestal and glue the ends of the cables straight to the bulb. Once the ship goes in its glass case, I dont ever have to touch the model to change a burnt out bulb or a dead battery.

Outstanding! I was looking for a way to add some realism to an A-10 model I built-specifically the muzzle flash and plume coming off the 30mm nose cannon that creates the signature “brrrrrrt brrrrrt” sound the Warthog is famous for. I was able to find a recordable chip like the ones they use on greeting cards that’s just long enough to capture that sound that I will just pull off some footage I have. This technique should work great for the flash. I might have to go with some thin plexi to support the cotton, but because of the airspeed, I don’t think the flash and smoke extends too far past the muzzle. I was originally considering using something like Great Stuff because I thought it would be stiff enough to support itself midair, but it’s pretty opaque if you want that brightness you’ve got going. Great job. Thanks for the inspiration!

Using the glue stick that way is a great idea. I'm surprised the glue stick is light enough to stay up on the led like that. These look very cool.
