I love the note about the lack of dialogue. I think it primarily serves the purpose of separating these ads from the typically loud, abrasive, and overly-expressive monologuing these commercials tend to have the rest of the year. Like “look we’re being sentimental and understated.” On a more sinister note it forces the viewer to actually watch the commercial rather than leave it playing in the background…
Hobby Lobby started doing that this year as well. Just tells me "ah this is a problematic company let me hit the skip button" Frankly they're shooting themselves in the foot. Hope they keep it up. Ads don't work the way they used to a lot of us younger people are way less opt-in on buying crap lol

Damn I didn’t even think about it that way. It just seemed logical not to include drivers or warehouse employees bc of all the bad press but when you frame it like they aren’t even representing the employees that make it all possible it’s so much worse.
The apple ad also glosses over real issues bc the message is “have pity for your terrible boss.” He’s taking out his misery on you and your quiet quitting. Sure, he might have money and stability, but you have passion! (that can’t pay the bills)
The most absurd thing to me is that in every holiday ad it's snowing outside and there like half a meter of snow on the ground and it's all white while in the real life, at least here, the last year where there was snow on the ground for more than three consecutive days it was 2012 and even our ads can't help themselves

Most of modern Christmas was itself invented as a marketing and protest- & union- dispersing event rolled into one. Was a slightly sad but fascinating part of history class
To be fair a significant part of christmas, and not just in the modern sense as some people think, is not necessarily about only selflessness but also _generosity._ of course being generous doesn't necessarily have to require being materially generous, you can give effort, affection, time and so on, and even in the material sense you could give something you made instead of something you bought, but it's not entirely constructed ex nihlo to give gifts
Was literally just thinking to myself yesterday how much I hate holiday advertising, and you did an excellent job of putting into words what I was feeling.
There's some weird vibe about these commercials that I really don't like. I feel way more nostalgia over a simple commercial like Hershey kisses playing "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" than I probably would have if these were the Christmas commercials of my childhood. These just feel so hollow and generic, like a Hallmark Christmas movie that's trying to sell you something.
Something that the stood out to me in the Coca-Cola add was that it seemed incredibly reliant on CGI. It adds another layer of falsity to the message it sends when the emblem of their add is a figure invented to never interact with a real person

I was discussing this topic with my parents over dinner recently, and they didn't really see why I found it so disturbing that our culture has developed a sense of nostalgia for famous advertisements. It's especially sad that some Christmas advertisements are so culturally ingrained that they run every year (think Hershey's and M&M's) like they're classic holiday films in themselves. I just wish we stopped to question these things in the midst of all the mindless consumerism of the season.

In regards to sleds, I highly recommend calf sleds. We use a small calf sled that we purchased from a farm supply store. It works fantastic for sledding, fits two people, allows for steering with your heels out in front, and best of all, the plastic doesn't break! Also works good to chain up to the side by side and hitch a ride back up to the top of the hill.
Just found your channel. I actually got hit with sadness from seeing the Amazon ad (i saw it a week ago) because it made me think about being an older woman with my sisters so ads featuring elderly can often trigger “future vision” for me. Also loved the dunking on Apple (please discuss Adobe next.) Can’t wait to see more from you and enjoy your holidays!
the sled part gets me, because I live in WI and we are used to getting several inches of snow by this point in the year, as of writing this on the 20th of Dec its fucking 40* out, which by our standards is very pleasant weather but its fucked up when you think about it man. companies like amazon are directly destroying the planet and then turning around and pretending like everything is fine. dont you guys love Christmas, walking in a winter wonder land, even tho there hasent been snow on the ground here all winter and we are living in a fucking hell space! nah its all good just put up some cute lights, dont think about how they are killing polar bears, dont worry, buy some plastic shit youll never use and keeping living in your bubble. everything is fine! brought to you by amazon lamo also sorry about that lil mental break there, the holidays bring out the doomer in me I wont lie. also those sleds are shit, have broken at least a dozen in my child hood when we had real winters, the foam ones are where its at but still not as good as old wood ones, never got to try one of those out sadly but defiantly still the best option. Also I love your vids, im glad to see im not the only person who cannot stand the transparent and just outright despicable shit they put into ads sometimes. they never fail to be insulting and belittling to the person watching, and often as you pointed out, they give no respect or credit to the talent and craft that goes into making them as, at the end of the day, they only exist to push the product being sold and anything else would be a distraction from the garbage they want to sell to you. Keep it up much love from the mid west

Can someone please explain how ads are supposed to work? Especially with coke: everyone has made up their minds about it. Generationally, addicted parents will have it in the house - kids don’t need the commercial messaging. Other people don’t buy coke ever. Are commercials targeting people who are on the fence about products? Or is the left half of humanity’s bell curve just not that discerning, likes to be led, and is moderately suggestible? Or buying ad space - like how do they expect any ad-any ad at all-to translate into a sale when they interrupt content, field of view, music, etc.? They pick the most irrelevant thing and talk about it at the least opportune time. The company who has the ad space makes money from the simpy company who wants me to buy coke, but I’m so infuriated at having to experience advertising that there’s no fkn way I’m ever going to buy coke or their known affiliate products. Yes I know big companies have their spindly fingers in all sorts of sectors; I’m not going to memorize the brand tree of huge diversified companies. But honestly does anyone remember 2006? Remember the DVR? Fast forwarding through commercials? That was the best. Ad block? Love it. I’m not the only one who loathes the ever-living heck out of marketing and commercials. So how do ads, especially the ones that don’t outright say what the thing is (coke example in this vid) ever make money? Edit: you’re a fool if you go to a company’s TH-cam page and deliberately watch an ad. That’s literally the opposite of what TH-cam is for. Volume down, eyes on the skip button, don’t buy anything because someone showed you an unrealistic version of it. Simple.
The Coca-Cola and Amazon ads, to me, start to feel like a copy of a copy - the nostalgia of yesterday filtered through the aesthetics of today without an understanding (or perhaps willingness to understand) of current cultural attitudes/feelings.
I love your points about Apple products and creative folks, I’ve had the same sentiments for years now. Also I just wanted to mention that when you are giving a direct quote, it’s a lot easier for me to understand what it says if you also put it on screen. I usually watch everything with captions but the auto captions on TH-cam are too unreliable and confusing so I turn them off.
Okay definitely love all of this, love everything you've acknowledged. The one I think is least successful and most nonsensical is the Amazon ad because, on top of everything you've acknowledged, it just doesn't tell its story in an understandable way. Like it is super unclear the ladies sitting on the bench are feeling nostalgic watching the sledders. It doesn't make sense that they feel in any way prevented from sledding. It doesn't make sense that the one thing that allows them to sled now is a seat cushion. Why not have them order a sled? How do the ladies know what the seat cushions are representing/suggesting upon their opening the box? And why is the lady who's shopping giving these disturbing "knowing looks" all the time? I genuinely had to watch a couple of times to even understand the plot. And the cool lighting and monotones everywhere was so abrasive. Nothing evoked "holidays" or "warm, positive feelings", and the only "sentimental" aspect was, as you point out, Slow Piano Music.
Coca-Cola actually Did create the iconic Santa in red that we know today back in like the 1880's or so and the based their character on the poem, The Night before Christmas.
There’s this one Cheerios commercial I found that they barely play anymore (seriously all commercials from around the mid-‘90s to 2005 are the ones I really like) and it’s this cute grandma and her baby and she’s explaining where everyone lives via the Cheerios. *”You ate Dallas!”* never fails to make me smile. Another one that they’ve recently kept playing is O Tannenpalm with the whistling. Also, sue me, but the Ronald McDonald ads with the runaway girl and the snowman and the Campbell soup ad with the kid melting kind of also work for me. If more ads were quiet about getting you to buy shit again or at least had more personable spokespeople (remember Steve the Dell Guy? I liked those…) then I’d be willing to shell out. Hell, the last time Pepsi tried speaking against something it was…not great.
I can kind of see why ads do ignore reality, though. It would be thoroughly weird if a commercial went "Last week, russia hit the Ukraine with a massive volley of missiles, BUY HOSTESS CUPCAKES" That said, I do wish they'd bring back fun and absurdity. Like the Degree Deodorant Stunt City ad. That was a lot of fun.
It's not illegal to have that many running lights, but every single one has to be operable. The more you add, the more chances you have to get a violation for one of them being out. That being said, this is the first of your videos I've seen. I liked it. I'll definitely be checking out some more.
I really liked the video! When doing the quote reads, especially longer ones, i find it helpful to have the quote written out on screen. I think it was genuinely a really good addition to the discussion, but the progress bar moving at the bottom combined with the lack of words made it slightly hard to focus Excited to see what comes from this channel next
Commissioned projects start as company property. That the creators are available as public information, and in this case known elements of the content, is all that is customary.

If you have an abusive boss with immense power over you, just eat lunch alone with him so he can harass you in private. I also feel like it is low-key fatphobic too. Mean fat boss is such a horrid trope and making him abusive and then redeeming him does not make up for it.
Companies on the holidays: "We need more Santas, more kindness and unity." The same companies with the usual brutal business tactics, layoff staff, and will sue anyone over the tiniest things.
I’m trying real hard to make non commercial non religious traditions for my preschooler. Having grown up in poverty, so much of the Christmas shit is icky to me. We prefer Halloween for a lot of reasons and I hope companies leave it the fuck alone.
Personally, I will associate the second ad's style with as psychopath who wants to torture her boss, not with a tech company. It's gives me the creeps that people relate to that.
What I hate the most about holiday ads is how they always use covers from very popular songs from the past. But the covers are always slowed down and have a piano instead of all the other instruments, so that the song sounds more sentimental and sad. To me it just cheapens the original song and makes me like it less. And instead of sounding sentimental, just sounds hollow and fake, like a cheap knock off of an item of an high quality brand.
I'm only shocked those old ladies didn't get seriously injured using those no doubt awful Chinese sleds...which were probably made by some "company" called SIGWIWG or PODPWDHS or ZIXBIDBS (yes I just mashed the keypad...)
I'm interested in a video about UK Christmas adverts, since the entire month of December here has Superbowl-levels of marketing hype and "which brand made the best advert" talk every year

Also loved the dunking on Apple (please discuss Adobe next.) Can’t wait to see more from you and enjoy your holidays!
PLANET DOB MUSIC SPOTTED!!!!!!
also.. awesome vid :)
It's December 27th, and this is the first I am seeing these adds 😎👍
The best happy holidays message I've ever heard.
I also like your composure.
There are few things I hate so thouroughly as marketigng BS, realising I'm still being influenced by it (making me hate it even more).
just heard 3 commercials in a row with the a shitty generic jingling bells riff of Deck the Halls. Bing babing bing, bing bing bing bing
some of my family worked at coca-cola and during the holidays my grandparents house would be filled with holiday coke stuff especially with santa
the sled part gets me, because I live in WI and we are used to getting several inches of snow by this point in the year, as of writing this on the 20th of Dec its fucking 40* out, which by our standards is very pleasant weather but its fucked up when you think about it man. companies like amazon are directly destroying the planet and then turning around and pretending like everything is fine. dont you guys love Christmas, walking in a winter wonder land, even tho there hasent been snow on the ground here all winter and we are living in a fucking hell space! nah its all good just put up some cute lights, dont think about how they are killing polar bears, dont worry, buy some plastic shit youll never use and keeping living in your bubble. everything is fine!
brought to you by amazon
lamo also sorry about that lil mental break there, the holidays bring out the doomer in me I wont lie.
also those sleds are shit, have broken at least a dozen in my child hood when we had real winters, the foam ones are where its at but still not as good as old wood ones, never got to try one of those out sadly but defiantly still the best option.
IKR! There's still green in the grass and it got coldest around like early November, which is crazy. Winter's been coming later and later as I've grown up. Anyways, hating ads in wisconsin gang rise up!
That Amazon ad is a regular on UK TV 🙂
16:53 I liked this a lot! it's like if someone were to switch therapists to "better" one only to realize that therapy is a tool you still gotta do the work. I might mention your quote as an example in the future
I respect what youre doing so much. I would gladly volunteer my time to this channel
Thank you for explaining and citing the term “auto-sad”
Finally i have a word for it!
Hey I just found your channel and watched this whole video. Just want to mention that your background music is awesome. Thanks
Your content is incredibly interesting, informative and enjoyable!

Amazing analysis.
Reqlly taking issue with the idea that swedish subway stations may be clean... gave a viceral flashback to that one time a dog turd was slowly ground to nothingness in the one near my house.... b l e g h
Who is that angel on the bookshelf behind you?
Simple.
I like the Coca Cola Santa.
oh i get it, the present
The Coca-Cola and Amazon ads, to me, start to feel like a copy of a copy - the nostalgia of yesterday filtered through the aesthetics of today without an understanding (or perhaps willingness to understand) of current cultural attitudes/feelings.
Real magic is on the level of hungry for apples . Interestingly the mail box color would be accurate in Canada .
Love your analysis 👍
I feel like i gotta do an obligatory "first" never been here before
Okay definitely love all of this, love everything you've acknowledged.
I love this channel exactly the insight I like!
Your videos are next level man. Love them.
I can kind of see why ads do ignore reality, though. It would be thoroughly weird if a commercial went "Last week, russia hit the Ukraine with a massive volley of missiles, BUY HOSTESS CUPCAKES"
That said, I do wish they'd bring back fun and absurdity.
Coca-Cola really went for that buy n large aesthetic
Great video, the snow burying you was a great visual gag. I looked up from my painting and it really caught me off guard. Happy Christmas!
Lo, another banger vid, for this valuable service I render upon you a like and comment for engagement
I really liked the video! When doing the quote reads, especially longer ones, i find it helpful to have the quote written out on screen. I think it was genuinely a really good addition to the discussion, but the progress bar moving at the bottom combined with the lack of words made it slightly hard to focus
Excited to see what comes from this channel next
Commissioned projects start as company property. That the creators are available as public information, and in this case known elements of the content, is all that is customary.
WOO new nbi video! i have a special hatred in my heart for ad/PR, especially because the firms made searching for a journalism internship very difficult
If you have an abusive boss with immense power over you, just eat lunch alone with him so he can harass you in private. I also feel like it is low-key fatphobic too. Mean fat boss is such a horrid trope and making him abusive and then redeeming him does not make up for it.
Companies on the holidays: "We need more Santas, more kindness and unity."
The same companies with the usual brutal business tactics, layoff staff, and will sue anyone over the tiniest things.
I love your videos! ❤
These vids are great. Would love to see you go into more detail on workers like you touched on with Amazon not including their workers.
Editing was highly entertaining. Would love to watch that last ad with the Attorney General comments superimposed
i agree adobe for illustrations i cant use for the life of me but magma studios is amazing
Love your videos!! And the title of your series.
Another great vidoe
I’ll wait for the next vid patiently 🧡
u lowkey goated tbh hope u pop off soon
I AM REALLY LOVING UR VIDEOS!!!!!!!!!!!!
whats the background music around 22:00?
I'm only shocked those old ladies didn't get seriously injured using those no doubt awful Chinese sleds...which were probably made by some "company" called SIGWIWG or PODPWDHS or ZIXBIDBS (yes I just mashed the keypad...)
your content is top tier
@16:33 yes, that's PinkPanthress.
I'm interested in a video about UK Christmas adverts, since the entire month of December here has Superbowl-levels of marketing hype and "which brand made the best advert" talk every year
