Yeah cost me $200 something with the game gear adapter and now it got me hooked on buying handheld games. Love it but its going to become a money pit for someone who doesn't have a large collection of gameboy or game gear games!
The Analogue link cable exists (and has that weird switch in the middle of it) because the second generation (GBP, GBL, and GBC) use a different pin layout than the third generation (GBA). The switch allows you to select which generation you want to use in order to only need one cable. So set it to GBA for GBA games and to GBC for all regular GB(C) games. It's quite convenient that way, and as far as I know entirely unique commercially.
Edit: Also the dock has the metal tube on top to look like the Analogue logo lying on the flat side.
I used to have a link cable like that let you hook your GBA up to your GBC/GBP back in the day. Very useful for trading my Pokemon back and forth between versions, since I had a GBC and a GBA.
@@LordVarkson That's every GB/C link cable. You need a second generation link cable to connect GB or GBC games to each other regardless of what system you play them on, so for example GBP to GBA. However that same link cable does not work with GBA games as those games expect the different pin layout from the third generation link cables, the GBA link cable.
@@RAHelllord No so it had a switch and a two plug end, which let you switch between GBC/GBP mode and GBA mode. So the same cable could let me trade with Gen 4 GBA Pokemon with my friend, and back to older generations between my GBA and GBC.
I think the technicals were, one end was GBA, and the split end was GBC + GBA, and the switch would route between them.
@@LordVarkson That's interesting, all I ever found were cables that had both plugs on one end. Do you still have the cable and does it say the manufacturer or a model number somewhere on it?
Cancelled my order to just put an IPS screen on my advance for half the price. Wasn’t gonna get the AP shipped for awhile anyway and they charged me almost $270 for the preorder. Your tutorials gave me the confidence to mod my GBA. Thank you.

I mean if you enjoy playing on original cartages. Yeah just mod a GBA. if you want a dedicated retro handheld get a retroid pocket 2+. It plays everything up to Gamecube and some PS2 games. Android games and runs everything great!

I cancelled my pre order but I buy a white Analogue Pocket on ebay for 300, I have all GBA SP, GBC etc modded with IPS, but the AP is next level, the screen is amazing

I've had my Pocket for a few weeks and I've been loving it. I'm not a usually a handheld gamer but I've been loving sitting in the conservatory playing my old Game Boy carts that have been boxed up for years. It's a bit of a shame the software is a lil half baked at the moment, especially on the Dock but it'll only get better over time. Glad to see that Analogue got a review package to you and you're enjoying it. Thanks for all the great vids you do.

Got myself a GG and couple of pockets to fix and mod. I've got a bug and I blame you completely.
After using Pocket for almost 2 weeks I’ve noticed that when pressing the “down" button it sometime triggers the “right" input, and that when pressing the “left" button it sometimes triggers the “up” input. The “up” and “right” buttons work well without any problem. Could this be something that is easy to fix or is it better to send it for repair?

Haven't noticed that yet but I have notice the power button is loose and because it flush with the system it get a little annoying shutting it down or turning it on!

As cool as it is, I don't think the wait list or cost is worth it if you've already got a GBA SP or a GBA. Maybe if they eventually get a handle on production. But A+ on the video, that was a great intro.
In my opinion it heavily depends how much the objectively better screen and audio are worth to the prospective buyer. I took the plunge because none of my modded GB really hit it for me and the Pocket blows them out of the water. The display is nothing short of perfect and similarly the audio quality is as crisp and clear as it'll ever be. And the fact that it can masquerade as any of the devices from the GB line as well as a fully modded GG is just the icing on top of it.
But you're definitely hitting diminishing returns hard on the investment if you've already got those modded consoles and are happy with them. If you're already happy with yours it may not improve things far enough to be worth the wait or price tag.
I agree that the wait is not worth it. The speed that technology moves, by that time something will be out that is a lot better.
@@RAHelllord you make excellent points and for me the modded and original GBA SP I've got is more than good enough. And with a handy headphone adapter I can also get crispy audio with headphones. However if they made the Analogue pocket resemble the form factor of a GBA instead, I may prefer it simply from an ergonomics standpoint because using it wouldn't be much more comfortable than a normal Gameboy or GBA SP. The current form factor of the Gameboy and SP sort of limit my gametime because for my hands being arthritic definitely doesn't help. Idk if that makes sense but if you have arthritis you probably know lol
@@TheDoctorCMG I don't have arthritis but I can imagine it would be an annoying shape to hold. I also hope they'll eventually release a proper GBA version with proper integer scaled screen. GBA games look gorgeous on the Pocket but I'd love to have the image as big as the GB/C games are.
Definitely caught up in FOMO but honestly unless they put it in the form factor of the original GBA I just don't want it. My poor fucking hands.
I bought the Super NT, and from there I was hooked. I wish I had bought their Analogue NT Mini. I did get a preorder in for my Analogue Pocket and Dock, but that won't come until 2023. And that is a long wait time, but I am hoping it is worth the wait.
I’ve been keeping my Pocket in the case, then keeping that case in its original box for added protection. And then keeping that box in a puffy beanie for even more protection. And then not taking it out for that final level of protection. Wouldn’t want it to break, I’d go back to being a Pocketless pleb.

I'm pretty sure that card that comes with the screen protector is used to push out those air bubbles. Unless, of course, you like them there. :)

I can't get Kirby's Dreamland 2 to work on my Analogue Pocket. And I can't see any mention of it in the reddit threads. It's my childhood cartridge and it still works on my real gameboy and gameboy color.
I caved and bought one. I may need to wait a whole year but I was persuaded by similar folks in your documentary, lol.

I had a preorder but I was put in group B and I wasn't gonna wait until the end of the year so I canceled. I gave up on getting one after 2 years, there's nothing wrong with my AGS-101.

I don't believe Analogue has any plans for console adapters (well aside from the PC Engine/TG16) unfortunately. I'd like to have them for everything. I used to play the old NES/Famicom portable, the GameAxe, back in 1998. It looked a bit ridiculous, with the huge NES cart flapping about, but it worked. :)

It's funny because the real price of this device is well over 200$ if you want the dock and accessories that really distinguish it on the market.

Mod a gameboy so it has mechanical switches/buttons instead of those membrane buttons.
There was a razer xbox like controller some time ago that had those clicky mouse buttons for the abxy buttons

Yesn't. Some work, some don't, all of them have a few more quirks that need to be fixed. Krikzz has likely managed to identify the root cause for the weird behavior but unless Analogue patches the Pocket flashcart support will be a gamble.

Was also just thinking that along the lines of the Game Gear adapter, would be really cool if they developed some kind of SMS adapter like they did for the original Game Gear. Game Gear is essentially a portable SMS so should be doable.
Apparently it's possible to just use the SMS adapter with the Game Gear adapter to make a real monster of a handheld out of the Pocket. Though seemingly there are still a few quirks with how they're displayed but future updates should be able to improve that further.
Ive seen alot of vids on the analogue pocket. Ive checked the site but unless im missing or overlooking it, i cant find the buy now button, only the pre-order button as if the system isnt out?
The system is out but they don't have any stock. You're currently buying into the second, third, or more realistically fourth production run of the thing. Also to note: If you buy now you get charged in full right away and will then wait until it actually ships some time in 2023, so be very certain if you want to give away a couple hundred bucks plus expensive shipping for at least a year.

I'm not interested in the dock, got a MisterFPGA for that. I want the Game Gear and Atari Lynx add-ons to play all those games on, even though I have modded versions of the consoles with nice screens.

i'd think i would love a analouge pocket but the price is insane, i wish they did some stuff to lower the price but maybe its just new and the prices are high, maybe a month or 2 will help the price
I have an analog pocket and it's not that special. Its nice but I actually prefer mine IPS SP. I'm kind of hoping that through updates it will be my preferred handheld.

Yes you can, but the screen isn't quite perfect yet, seemingly there are still a few games with aspect ratio issues but those will probably be fixed as more updates roll out

My temporary solution before i buy one when the price becomes normal (600$ is a bit too much for a 200$ device ... like the PS5 sold at thousand dollars than the real price that's 4/500$) is to use a Nintendo DS Lite plus an EZ-Flash IV Omega cartridge 😉
